I'll wait and talk about the roster once Spring Training starts. To complain about it on December 2nd doesn't make much sense. Trades can happen. Sasaki can happen. Just let it all play out.
Camilo Doval…. When he first came on the scene, even on MLB The Show last year and in 22, THE DUDE WAS UNHITTABLEEEEEEEEEEEE! Where did all that talent go? SMDH
Guys, I told you this off season the focus is to get to 90 wins, and pitching and especially bullpen! So now we get a depth piece on catcher, a depth piece on SP, the next move is two more bullpen arms with one a big one can close. Tanner will not be so quick, there will be a bidding war and Boras will make him wait. But we can trade for Helsley or Miller. Then they will wait to see after Soto signed, who will desperate to trade for Cody. If they can trade Cody, they will get a big bat. So just wait and see if the moves can add up to 90 wins! I don’t think Jed think offense is a big issue last season, if you look at the numbers, it was not that bad. He thinks the bullpen is the issue, if the bullpen did not got so many injuries and Neris did not work out, the offense will not be that in the spot light that much. He ONLY admitted issues with bullpen! So you know where he would focus on if you read carefully what he says. And I think it is a right move since we need to give so many young bats chances, UNLESS a Soto which they did check in. All other big bat free agents all have glaring flaws ! So I think it is a good plan. Fans only care, only know, only get excited on big names. And at least half of the big names don’t work out if you look at the history.
If Jed thinks hitting wasn't a problem last season, he's incompetent. Hitting betrayed the team in May and June and sunk the season. They did recover somewhat, but the damage was done. And the pitching regressed after being stellar in May and June, but it got squandered. The rule of thumb is that hitting accounts for about 60 percent of the game. So you'd be smart to focus on that side of it.
Also I expect the Cubs to do very little in any department via trade. I could see them dumping Belli for a Mid level reliever , and then maybe a Hoerner and some prospect to Seattle for George Kirby. But that is a massive stretch in my opinion. Jack Neeley and Benjamin Cowles will be the fill ins . Cowles takes the Patrick Wisdom / Nick Madrigal spot. Neeley fills the spot of the arms cut from last year. Those are the Cubs big moves ...they already made them last year
Love the Boyd signing , he is a solid 3/4 starter and upgrade from Hendricks to go with Jameson, gives them nice flexibility for that 5th spot to work in young guys like Assad/Brown/Horton ect.
Alot of fans think Counsell = strategy OVER spending. Problem is -- that's not true. It's the issue I have with the Hoyer/Hawkins-regime spending BIG cash on junk-ballers like Morrow (Theo-era), Smyly, Boxberger, Fulmer, Neris, Hendricks... and now Boyd (among unlisted others). It just feels... like Jed was the guy responsible for flipping Arrieta & Strop. And that is his main strategy. Buy low, rebuild the engine, fix the transmission and turn a base car into a Hellcat. Problem is, that's rare. Lightning struck twice, once, with the boys from Baltimore that helped the Cubs to a ring. And it seems like Hoyer keeps trying to do it it with buy low/high-ceiling project-players via trade or reduced cost contracts. No one in the mainstream media (other than Kap & Rosenthal) have held his feet to the fire on the "projects" that were utter failures. Granted some of those were with Theo as President, but Hoyer was his Colonel underneath Gen. Epstein. In the last decade i'm sensing a lame theme and all of them involved Hoyer's decision making and Ricketts skittishness to spend on superstars. THAT... has been the bane of the Cubs existence since post-2016. They keep trying a recipe-for-success that failed to yield anymore fruitful results MANY years ago. Time to either change, or get out the way and let someone else try something different.
@@naturallawman2965 I think you’re 100 % correct. That’s why this so frustrating, I’m fine if they don’t spend, but they have to start making moves to get these young guys up. Neely and Cowles are on the 40 man. Let’s get Shaw and Cassie on there too. Let ‘em play

I've been a Cubs fan for over 40 years and we've had our ups and downs during that time. Right now I'm looking forward to the team that they put on the field for 2025. All I can say is good luck to Boyd and I hope he kicks some butt. Go Cubs!
Being a Cubs fan is really frustrating right now. Couldn’t they at least go after Soto. He would help them win 90 games a year, would bring them a Superstar back to Chicago. Jordan for the Bulls is a great example. Jordan is still a superstar around Chicago What the hell are they thinking?? I live in Utah, and would pay big dollars to watch Soto play at Wrigley Field. I wouldn’t care how much my tickets cost. Unbelievable ownership and management. Frustrated!!
So the Cubs signed another grizzled, old vet? True to form. And why isn't Cade Horton even mentioned? As of a report dated November 8, he is healthy and expected to have a "normal" offseason. After listening to your show, it sounds like the Cubs wouldn't have the money to get Roki Sasaki. Landers of Fan-Sided suggested the Cubs will move on from Cody after the Boyd signing.

I think Boyd helps the rotation so I’m okay with it. We’ll see what else they do, and ultimately how the team performs. Jed has been good on some and whiffed on others. Not the worst but not the best either. He needs a win this year.
I honestly think this is just the start of some big changes. Roki won't announce until early/mid -January. If the Cubs don't get him, Jed will trade for another starter. Matt, we will get $ back when Belli is traded. Maybe not the full $27m but at least enough to cover the Boyd signing. I still think we will sign Adames and a couple of tier two relievers. Shaw and Caissie will be starting next year. Great show guys!
Cubs aren’t signing Adames, his salary will be ridiculous and then they have a domino effect with Shaw, Busch etc. While he’d be nice to have Cubs have bigger fish to fry.
With those big Boras FA all signed this off season, next season will be really slow and Cubs can take advantage. Dodgers Yankees will all be done on big FA when they go all in this year. Mets also likely be done. The major competitors will only be Boston (depending on how many FA they sign this year), SF, Washington. That’s it. So we might be able get Vlad. And they will go over the tax on him! So keeping this year under the tax is crucial!
Don't act like Drew was horrible the entire time he ran out of gas at the end....this is why it's hard to listen every day, you cant be a "what have you done for me lately" guy and expect people to take your seriously
Boyd should have a WAR close to 3 if he stays healthy. That would make him one of the Cubs' most productive players. I think it was a shrewd move. But they still need to get a number 2 or 3 starter. They do that, get someone to get outs at the end of games, and someone in the middle of the batting order that can slug a little, and they'll be a playoff contender in 2025 barring injury. I have to assume the Cubs have a plan for the offseason, and that they'll do their best to implement it.
Meanwhile the Dodgers have signed basically an all star team roster with over a billion (with a B) of deferred money. At this point MLB is a joke. No one is beating the Dodgers. No need to even play the season when you allow a team to spend over a BILLION dollars for players ...when teams like the cubs dont wanna hit a 55 MILLION dollar luxury tax.
This isn't a bad signing at all. Of course it's a bit high but the deal is in line with projections for Boyd. Before everyone starts complaining let's just see how they complete the roster.
Cubs currently have too many lefty starters (Imanaga/Steele/Boyd/Wicks), yet not enough lefty relievers (Zastryzny/Little). need to trade a lefty starter or 2 for more lefty relievers.
Sure he’ll cost more but you know his potential. This dude is about to be 34 and has barely a track record. This is a cody bellinger signing all over again
Hiring Counsel was them telling us they will be trying to do more with less $
They literally are spending 15 million on a part time starter.
