- This is the closest to a rant I've ever done. I honestly just believe the Minecraft Movie Trailer has a lot of flaws, the biggest being that it hates itself.

You get minecraft, a game KNOWN for it's style, and you just... decide to ignore it's style and go live-action mixed with CGI? makes no sense.

There's a great video on YT called Sincerity: Hollywood's Forgotten Currency that perfectly describes what you're talking about. It's like nothing can be taken seriously, everything is a meme or a joke. It prevents any movie from being related to and resonating with. The Mario movie didn't throw in a joke like you mentioned, so people loved it more because it was sincere in its emotions. A stupid meme joke that is BARELY funny at all about a sheep looking ugly, Steve being a weirdo, or a Llama surprised and then back to normal, detract from any emotional investment.

Irony is used as a crutch in pretty much all fantasy adaptations, because market analysts are sure that the general audience is only able to like the fantasy genre in an ironic way. The irony is poisoning D&D in the same way.
It's as if these movies are afraid to just be themselves, so they have to make a silly joke every 5 minutes to say "look guys, we think this is dumb too, don't criticise us please"

There is a movie based on a storyless sanbox thing where the main focus is creativity and building things. . . it's called the lego movie. The lego movie I think is the perfect example of what the minecraft movie could've been. an absolute love letter to it's source material that is not ashamed of itself in the slightest and explores creativity which is what minecraft is all about

the lego movie is also a perfect example of a lego movie. one of my favorite movies of all time. and that's because it unbiasedly just is one of the best
all we’ve seen is a trailer lol, why’s everyone so quick to judge? Besides I heard lots of people who worked on the Lego Movie worked on the Minecraft movie I heard. As well as the same composer. They also got Jared Hess as the director so you know it could be some underrated masterpiece.
@@TheBrilliantBrick people are quick to judge because the problems with this movie seem to be fundemental, no matter what they do the movie will look ugly and it's far too late to change that. Comedy does have potential to be great however what was shown was really not good at all, I'd be hard pressed to even call them jokes, since the "jokes" we saw are "pink sheep goes "baaaaah" but it's blocky and that's weird so character goes like "what the hell?" and "steve goes like "raaagh! I . . . am steve!" and for some reason that's supposed to be funny and the other characters react to him just saying who he is by going "pshh okay" and "this guy is such a toolbag" and the final "joke" being "llama eating almost gets shot and freezes as piglins run past and then it resumes eating"
now yes, is there a possibility that the teaser just happend to choose the worst most non-joke jokes to show off and the rest of the movie is comedy gold? yes, that could happen and if that does I'll be more than happy to say I was wrong. But if it isn't then this movie will be a real pain. I can assure you that people who don't like this teaser really wanted to like it and we all want to be wrong about it being bad, but it just isn't looking good, and we're not jumping to conclusions, cuz what we've been shown is flawed on a fundemental level

Its a TEASER, its not ment to show people what the movie is about like what a trailer is supposed to do,
a teaser is simply ment to TEASE the audience for what the movie looks, how it might work and such.

I think the reason Minecraft doesn't feel as much like Minecraft in the trailer aside from the obvious reasons is because its not. A lot of the mechanics and plot seem to be taken from Minecraft legends. I mean a quick google search of Minecraft legends plot says and a quote "the Overworld uniting against an invasion by the ravenous piglins" 😐. apparently warner bros decided it would be a great idea to make the Minecraft movie about the literal least popular Minecraft spin off instead of the actual game

im just gonna assume that this movie was intended to go the way of the Velma. an intentional ragebait using the legacy of a popular thing as a disguise. they make it unrecognizable, ignore key reasons why people love the source material, evict the format (format being minecraft’s blocky style, seriously this looks nothing like the game i just played 4 hours ago) out of its own house, and then it feeds off of hate watchers and unsuspecting new viewers for the next decade

I disagree, but for a reason that might be a bit arbitrary. I think humanizing Steve too much is a bad idea, if that makes sense. Part of Minecraft’s charm is its simplicity, especially in the early days, and that simplicity is something Steve is inherently tied to as the main player character since pretty much the very beginning.
My idea was that the mobs in the game are intelligent and go on some quest (maybe to kill the Ender dragon and free their people in some way?) and they run into Steve. Steve in this case would be like a legendary creature that they’re afraid of at first, but they somehow befriend him and he’s basically like a lost puppy. He doesn’t talk or understand them when they do, he just kind of follows them around and helps them by chance. What little characterization there is would have to be told nonverbally and in a simple way, like maybe he hears disc 13 being played and gets sad, implying maybe its telling the story of a friend who died since disc 13 is often speculated to be a death by (or at least a close call with a) creeper. I feel like it could be like Wall-E where they give Steve character and depth, but in a way that still makes him feel not human, but something simpler.
This way you can flesh out the mobs and their cultures, which allows for the creative freedom they’d need in order to build a plot, without ruining the simplicity of Steve. Creating different rules and cultures for the mobs is also something that a lot of the community has done, so it’s something people clearly like in concept.
I dont think the directors or writers or even the producers have ever touched minecraft before. They write it off as "ah its that blocky game for kids, I get it!" Because thats the vibe Im getting at. Like a how you doing fellow Minecrafters situation

It's the 'politically correct policy' as I like to call it. Make inclusive characters for the sake of appearing better for the public, but it backfires and it only looks forced, mostly because it is. You can always see when it is forced when there's only one black person with the 'mah boi, ain't that cool?' accent.
Minecrafts animals are derpy in a charming way, but translating them into this weird realistic style like this makes them derpy without the charm
They're cute and people love them, making them ugly and offputting is the exact opposite of their appeal! Just think of that joke but made with bees or foxes or axolotls.

I like how you pointed out that none of the characters seem to have any motivation to do anything, that’s something I haven’t really seen mentioned before? the trailer should get you invested in the characters and what their goals are, but the four main characters just stand around passively for 95% of the trailer not doing anything. and you don’t know anything about their personalities either, you could swap them out or even remove one or two of them and not even notice. The only one who sort of has a personality shown is the bIack woman during the sheep scene, she’s sassy and outspoken guys, so original and definitely not stereotypical!!!!1
every movie tries to have “the outspoken sassy black woman” and its so annoying do something else with black characters for once!! she was 100% just a diversity cast so the movie could say “hey we like black people come see the movie other black people!” and to be honest none of these characters look like they’re anything more than a stereotype or literally ripped straight from jumanji.

FINALLY someone else who has my perspective of the way the movie presents itself. The Minecraft movie trailer seems to present Minecraft as something that is designed to be made fun of. Minecraft story mode's gags about the source material worked because everything else in those games were still unapologetically Minecraft. I personally see the eay Minecraft is portrayed as a deliberate attempt to shane people who enjoy minecraft for reasons other than "le funny block game hehe."

Personally, I don’t get the point people make that “Minecraft doesn’t have a story”, that’s literally what makes Minecraft perfect for telling stories, it’s why Minecraft animations were so damn good, Minecraft is a blank canvas with a selection of every paint and brush to make your own arts, if Minecraft had a story to follow, we would’ve never had fallen kingdom
That being said, it is a literal walk in the park making a movie for Minecraft, the only way you can fuck up a Minecraft movie is character and costume design, which they did, they fucked up the only two things required for a Minecraft movie

It reminds me a lot of the awful Monster Hunter movie where for some reason they decided to have the main characters be American soldiers for some reason transported to the Monster Hunter world. Rather than you know...an actual story set entirely in the Monster Hunter universe which it's rich lore, themes, and locations.

The Minecraft Story Mode used to get a lot of slack for some reason but it was way better than what Hollywood could make for an IP such as this.

Minecraft story mode had a few downs but in my opinion the overarching story was good enough to pull everything together and I think the endings were perfect.
If the movie starts with "nothing built can last forever," I will IMMEDIATELY forgive it.

Hearing you mention how Steve is a blank character made me realize how much better this would be if in the movie he communicated at most by slightly bending over and waving his arm at people. He was just doing his own thing, and maybe one or two surrogate characters were following him beffutled as he defied the laws of physics and faught supernatural threats nonchalantly. Then the surrogate characters would at least serve the purpose of providing dialogue, as Steve and possibly Alex would be silent. Also if they actually settled on a block scale.
Honestly there were at least 4 correct choices they could have made about how to handle the characters, even having a movie with zero dialogue would be better than this.
here’s the thing, a minecraft isekai plot could work, it worked in Max Brook’s official minecraft novels, after all. however there are two things that make it work better.
1) it’s not trying to have a basic-ass kids show plot, it respects the reader’s intelligence. (one of the plot points in it is that the main character becomes vegetarian because he can’t bear to kill the animals. which actually leads into my second point quite well)
2) this is perhaps the most important of the two. *the main characters don’t know they’re in minecraft, and their reactions are not the painfully generic “what the hæll❓” and other semi-sarcastic, self-aware quips.* they act as if they woke up, not in the video game minecraft, but in a separate world. this is better because not only does it work better for the story and comedy (there’s a whole scene in the first book where one of the main characters gets mad that they can’t grab grass because it just disintegrates when they touch it and it’s pretty funny.), but it can also harken back to the reader’s first time playing minecraft. not looking at it as this familiar game, but as a world with infinite possibilities, where you didn’t know what, definitively, was out there.
god, they should’ve just made an adaptation of that, and made it fully animated by element animation (the guys that do the minecraft trailers), and it would be 100x better than this hollywood cgi slop.

The piglins look good because they're supposed to be scary. The sheep is supposed to be cute but the realism mixed with the blockiness makes it uncanny valley.
Another thing worth noting: They are competing with a minecraft story that already exists (Minecraft Story Mode). So if they dont even do as good as that, then the idea of a sequel is gone
The fact that Steve is not a block-person is a big problem! Like, he's part of the game, unlike the humans that get sucked into it!
Minecraft is about exploring an infinite world and creating your own story with friends, and building amazing things. These characters don't look like they want to be there, and that the plot is just "happening to them" rather than them actively participating in the world.
I would have loved the movie so much more if it at least followed in the footsteps of idk, like the book Minecraft the island, which is an official mc story, not only that, but I should have been animated, like the trailers

The movie was essentially written in 2014 so I’d totally see them shoehorn in Alyx in a way that doesn’t actually affect the plot because no one wanted to shoot down a decade old decaying script for the most popular video game in the entire planet
I wish they could have gone the "The Lego Movie" route, and used Minecraft as a medium to tell an actually good story.

I'm going to predict the plot right now: Protag team gets sucked into the Minecraft world, Piglins invade and the protag team has to team up with Jack Black to stop them and save the world. And then they go back to the real world because for some fucking reason that's what they've beent trying to do the entire movie.
The movie gives off a vibes like if some sarcastic, sour cynical older teenage sibling with a younger brother obsessed with minecraft, was put in charge to make a movie about minecraft.
"Hah ha Looo-sers, look at your stupid sheep, dumb game. Ooo I'm crafting a bucket with stuuffff look at me wow, I'm a minecrafter. You boring dweeb, go kill those pig things like in CoD at least do something cool, you dork." Except instead in reality it's not a sour teeny booper, it's some corporate CEO and jaded cgi employees.
Even it looks like the actors and possibly even the crew aren't really taking this seriously.
I love how the studio and jack black are going out of their way to tell us “this movie isn’t for you it’s for kids” but the characters are swearing. Granted they’re the most PG swears you can use but still it just seems weird to use any kind of “crude language” if the target audience is under the age of 12

yyyyeah there's no love for the source material in the script; it's not necessarily script writer's fault, though. Minecraft movie was already a product to sell before it was even made; and you can see they tried to tie the movie with Minecraft Legends like it's an overbloated advertisement. It's a convoluted mess of patchwork, and after 10 years they just had to salvage the parts they had and just release it. Of course they went with the cheapest and safest route they could choose, just like whole US movie industry nowadays - safe and boring means money. ... It's just, really disappointing, Microsoft owns the trademark therefore tries to earn the money however they can, running in circles and trying to make people spend more money on the brand; of course it's not going to work and just bring mediocre success because people play Minecraft for Minecraft. Never stops top executives from trying "new" and "creative" ideas to wring out that sweet, additional revenue. This... botchling of a movie is a prime example. They just want people to spend money, and are out of ideas.
The explanation I heard for the awful clothes is that is supposed to be their minecraft skins. However, I know literally no one with minecraft skins that look that bad. Most people actually take a lot of pride in what skin they use.
If they made skins that match the personality of each character and actually look good. That would be a lot better. The obvious thing they could have done is just look at all the default bedrock skins (I hate bedrocks implementation but they exist) and make costumes based on those. Those skins are very simple and very sleek. Which in reality. It should just have never been live action. It should have been minecraft story mode with better writing.
Like I personally had two directions just off the top of my head. Either do like a almost documentary style movie. Using portals to go through the history of minecraft's updates. And all the different community stuff. Like herobrine. Or basically make "the average minecraft playthrough" the movie. Have it start in a village like story mode and work your way up to the ender dragon fight. All the in between could be basically showing off all the struggles a first time player goes through and learning how creative they can be when they learn all the mechanics. Which was partially what the story mode game was about. You could make the ender dragon fight basically a celebration of creativity in the game with like tnt cannons and flying machines. It doesn't even need to be the ender dragon. They could make the big finale an illager raid or mojang could use the movie as advertisement for a new boss in the game. Like some kind of Nether boss. Another good one could be the warden. They have so many options with the current state of minecraft. Have the movie be partially about one of those secondary areas like the nether, the end, or the deep dark. This is the type of movie where you need to make the world the main character.
I cant be the only one to notice the, what appears to be the TESSERACT.
I will die on this hill. live action COULD HAVE BEEN GOOD, IF they hadn’t made a movie that wants SO BADLY to be animated.
This movie was designed to make fun of Minecraft, rather than celebrating it. It's painfully obvious, every second of the trailer is just, horrible. And what's worse, is that all the people hating on the movie got the whole "It's not meant for you" Argument?? If it's not meant for the fans of Minecraft, then WHO THE FUCK IS IT FOR?
They should have made it from the villagers perspective and made steve into a horror movie monster. soon groups of villagers illagers and begin meeting to disscuss towns being found empty deserted and dead outposts ransacked misterious structures desolate remains of forrests deserts striped of sand strange prison camps where starved vilagers are forced to work endlessly and tortured.
Rumors say hes a tall man with long arms like one of the tall shadows but stronger smarter and endlessly malicious

instead of using a pink sheep which is incredibly rare, they couldve used screaming goat to do that scream. Then it wouldve made sense. Yes, if i saw a blocky goat yelling at me, id also go what the hell. maybe even chuckle because of how relatable it is. But a pink sheep its just... meh.
Why didn't the piglins turn into zombies?
Because the movie seems heavily inspired by Minecraft legends - a spin off game that fell off instantly
The Jack Black character needs to be 2x2 blocks in size instead of basic character 2x1 blocks.
And ya know, if nothing changes ide give this a 30/70 its going to flop, if it does Hollywood will probably never come back to touch Minecraft for at least 5 years, so guess what, we have waited 11 years for a Minecraft movie and prob wont get a real movie for many years after.
There's a few big red flags to note:
- a theory for the title being 'a minecraft movie' can be the same thing as what happened to the original High School Musical - its a placeholder. A writers room that doesn't end up changing this by the latter end of production, means the people making it have very low expectations for it's reception
- the block sizes are inconsistent, which is??? The ONE thing about minecraft's style besides being blocky? Every block is supposed to be roughly the same, and the fact they forgot about that makes the whole thing seem almost like they drew from AI 'realistic minecraft' prompts
- the characters might be dressed like That because this movie, unfortunately, could be set in the 80s-90s. Thats how jumanji it could be, that they literally walk into a Blockbuster and open a nether portal. This leads into my next bad prediction: the movie ends with a timeskip where one of the kids grew up to code minecraft in the real world
- the piglins as bad guys dont make sense...unless you've played minecraft legends in which case, yeah! You sure fight nether mobs in the overworld! I can only guess that microsoft themselves asked to push that though, if making fun of a pink sheep is their idea of a classic reference...
- above all, this movie doesnt want you to LIKE minecraft. It doesn't create awe or innovation, it isn't about survival or learning on your own. This movie isn't a universe that loves you. People are making it because the IP garners money.
The problem I have is that hollywood thinks we can only have ONE Minecraft movie, you know they arent gonna do another one, and they're wasting it on this

ive said it over a hundred times by now, but this movie is wildly out of touch and doesn't match the current time. i genuinely think it wouldve done decently well and not been met with massive backlash if it was released in, like, 2012.

Something I'd like to mention is that Minecraft does have a story, but it's incredibly subtle and told solely through environmental story telling. You have to actively seek out and put the pieces together for yourself by observing various structures and mob interactions with other mobs, the player and the world itself. This subtility allows Minecraft to be a blank canvas that anyone can put any story over, while also offering a framework for anyone build their own story over.
On another note it's a shame to see that the creators of the Minecraft movie having very little love or respect for the game they're adapting, and seem to just be making it for the sake of money.
