It just.. looks so bad

"Ashamed of itself" is a great way to phrase it There's a good reason the Mario Movie became the best selling video game movie, it believed in itself, it believed in the source material Minecraft's movie should've embraced the format its fans have been working with for years, 3D animation I could've 100% bought the story if it were like, real people before they get shot into the world, but then in the world they're actually Minecraft characters in Minecraft's world with its artstyle Though I still think it's a lame ass story and they could've done way way better playing it closer to the experiences a player finds in Minecraft, turning those experiences into journeys for characters already living in the world to overcome One idea I came up with, literally just from shooting the shit, is that you could have multiple Minecraft movies based on various experiences in the game, with each experience being given to a different character with different motivations and goals, one movie could be about caving to find diamonds, feeding into that old nostalgic feeling of when diamonds WERE the pinnacle ore that meant the most, with an overarching plot that the character trying to find diamonds has no self-esteem whatsoever, but HAS to seek out those diamonds because the village they reside in has been receiving worse and worse attacks with every approaching night, and stone/iron tools are starting to not cut it with what they believe their current skillset is, plus maybe they don't entirely fight off all the mobs and allows them to run away when day breaks because of that low self-esteem/cowardice The caving adventure not only serves to show how players feel when they go caving in Minecraft, but also as character development for this character to better their skillset and gain more confidence, and it's only WHEN they realise that their confidence is more important than their gear, and that they've gone all this way through thick and thin just to GET these diamonds, and are more than they thought they were because they took that leap of faith, that they actually find the diamonds, allowing them to return home just in the nick of time to fight off the approaching night mob mini-army, where peace is preserved PROPERLY because they actually take out all of the mobs And that's just one movie, about FINDING DIAMONDS, not even glancing at the Nether, or the End, or exploring various biomes, or generated structures like pyramids. There is so much potential to create love letter stories on the big screen about this game that is so full of experiences that everyone can come to relate to Furthermore I think Steve's characterisation in the trailer is kind of lame The way they seem to portray him with Jack Black is a guy who's totally full of himself and believes himself to be a wiz of the world But Steve's characterisation in say, the Minecraft update trailers, shows him to be a bit strange, and admittedly somewhat afraid of monsters (namely spiders), contrasted by Alex, who is rowdy and a bit mischievous (for example, scaring Steve into believing a spider was behind him and then laughing when he flips out all scared) He should be some guy who's all over the place, a weirdo who's super excited to see new people who doesn't question for a second any of Minecraft's logic because he's been living in it for ages and just wants to show off all the cool stuff he's made by himself, which is a character I could still totally see Jack Black playing if you really had to still have him as Steve because that feels like something along the lines of Po quite frankly I don't mind multiple interconnected movies that create an overarching plot ala MCU so long as each individual movie is enjoyable on its own as its own story but oh my fucking god this movie is going to be so disingenuous about everything relating to Minecraft's identity that I think the collective global reaction to any notion of a sequel in it is going to be sounds of billions of people throwing up

There's a few big red flags to note: - a theory for the title being 'a minecraft movie' can be the same thing as what happened to the original High School Musical - its a placeholder. A writers room that doesn't end up changing this by the latter end of production, means the people making it have very low expectations for it's reception - the block sizes are inconsistent, which is??? The ONE thing about minecraft's style besides being blocky? Every block is supposed to be roughly the same, and the fact they forgot about that makes the whole thing seem almost like they drew from AI 'realistic minecraft' prompts - the characters might be dressed like That because this movie, unfortunately, could be set in the 80s-90s. Thats how jumanji it could be, that they literally walk into a Blockbuster and open a nether portal. This leads into my next bad prediction: the movie ends with a timeskip where one of the kids grew up to code minecraft in the real world - the piglins as bad guys dont make sense...unless you've played minecraft legends in which case, yeah! You sure fight nether mobs in the overworld! I can only guess that microsoft themselves asked to push that though, if making fun of a pink sheep is their idea of a classic reference... - above all, this movie doesnt want you to LIKE minecraft. It doesn't create awe or innovation, it isn't about survival or learning on your own. This movie isn't a universe that loves you. People are making it because the IP garners money.

Story isn't just a to b plot progression. This movie could have dug deep into survival and strife within the world as players experience it with any mix of experiences. Rescue, self discovery, exploration, fucking anything. Minecraft provides as a decade+ of youtube shows. And we get jumanji.

The explanation I heard for the awful clothes is that is supposed to be their minecraft skins. However, I know literally no one with minecraft skins that look that bad. Most people actually take a lot of pride in what skin they use. If they made skins that match the personality of each character and actually look good. That would be a lot better. The obvious thing they could have done is just look at all the default bedrock skins (I hate bedrocks implementation but they exist) and make costumes based on those. Those skins are very simple and very sleek. Which in reality. It should just have never been live action. It should have been minecraft story mode with better writing. Like I personally had two directions just off the top of my head. Either do like a almost documentary style movie. Using portals to go through the history of minecraft's updates. And all the different community stuff. Like herobrine. Or basically make "the average minecraft playthrough" the movie. Have it start in a village like story mode and work your way up to the ender dragon fight. All the in between could be basically showing off all the struggles a first time player goes through and learning how creative they can be when they learn all the mechanics. Which was partially what the story mode game was about. You could make the ender dragon fight basically a celebration of creativity in the game with like tnt cannons and flying machines. It doesn't even need to be the ender dragon. They could make the big finale an illager raid or mojang could use the movie as advertisement for a new boss in the game. Like some kind of Nether boss. Another good one could be the warden. They have so many options with the current state of minecraft. Have the movie be partially about one of those secondary areas like the nether, the end, or the deep dark. This is the type of movie where you need to make the world the main character.

Now we have to wait 30 years to get a good adaptation for the Minecraft film.

Minecraft technically doesn't have a _main_ story, but there is plenty of lore sprinkled thoughout the world. Steve can be seen as a medium for the player but in more recent years Mojang has been giving him his own traits, and even distinguishing him from Alex to a drlegree. It's a sandbox game but there's no reason Minecraft couldn't work as something story driven. Even ignoring the main game; the books, trailers, and other games (Minecraft Story Mode) are all good proofs of concept.

Now im questioning the story they are trying to tell. What is their reason for being in the overworld? What is the ambition in this movie?

The movie was essentially written in 2014 so I’d totally see them shoehorn in Alyx in a way that doesn’t actually affect the plot because no one wanted to shoot down a decade old decaying script for the most popular video game in the entire planet

That's a lot movies nowadays, they hate themselves. They keep making jokes about how corny they are, breaking the 4th wall, pointing out how much they dislike their own tropes and characters and world and everything. Instead of expanding upon things to try to make them better or making things out of love, a lot of movies are now just made out of shame and hatred for themselves and the people watching the movies. A movie hating itself has become more corny than the tropes it was making fun of for being corny in the first place.

Hearing you mention how Steve is a blank character made me realize how much better this would be if in the movie he communicated at most by slightly bending over and waving his arm at people. He was just doing his own thing, and maybe one or two surrogate characters were following him beffutled as he defied the laws of physics and faught supernatural threats nonchalantly. Then the surrogate characters would at least serve the purpose of providing dialogue, as Steve and possibly Alex would be silent. Also if they actually settled on a block scale. Honestly there were at least 4 correct choices they could have made about how to handle the characters, even having a movie with zero dialogue would be better than this.

The piglins look good because they're supposed to be scary. The sheep is supposed to be cute but the realism mixed with the blockiness makes it uncanny valley.

Honestly jack black as Steve might be the worst part about this movie I can tolerate the goofiness of the rest but it doesn’t even look like he’s acting he’s just jack black with a blue shirt on, calling himself Steve( but also why pick the fat ass for the character who can carry millions of pounds of metal in his pockets??)

So I would understand if these people were real since they weren’t from the Minecraft world, but then why in the hell is Steve, from Minecraft, a real person too?

Something I'd like to mention is that Minecraft does have a story, but it's incredibly subtle and told solely through environmental story telling. You have to actively seek out and put the pieces together for yourself by observing various structures and mob interactions with other mobs, the player and the world itself. This subtility allows Minecraft to be a blank canvas that anyone can put any story over, while also offering a framework for anyone build their own story over. On another note it's a shame to see that the creators of the Minecraft movie having very little love or respect for the game they're adapting, and seem to just be making it for the sake of money.

'they know they're gonna make a lot of money' I actually doubt it, like in an effort to appeal to everyone they appealed to no one, people that like or love minecraft are not going to see the movie because look at it, people that don't know minecraft are going to see how fuckass ugly it is and not go see it, it's going to be a MASSIVE flop and they aren't going to understand why.

The Jack Black character needs to be 2x2 blocks in size instead of basic character 2x1 blocks.
