      @@sandofarms I'd blame more on the lack of coverage leading to many blindspot angles, and it doesn't help that the tone switches to Lock for a good few seconds despite previous missile still launching towards you.

    Sadly DCS doesn't simulate or model the SPO-15 radar warning receiver properly at all in the DCS. It has unrealistic audio, logic, light illumination and even the RWR antenna coverage.
    The SPO-15 doesn't have any "blind spot". Neither does the previous SPO-10 version (that has just four lights for direction in 45 degree accuracy).

    • @piketchupwarthog3574
      @piketchupwarthog3574  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I can't say that I know the technical details of the SPO-15, but many RWR had blindspots on top/bottom. RWR setups tend to cover 360 from the sides only, which is why SAMs can still "surprise" from below, as is the case in OAF shootdowns.

    • @paristo
      @paristo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@piketchupwarthog3574 The SPO-10 has a blind spot above and below as it has just a four directional antennas, these can be observed example in the MiG-21 in the middle of the wing leading edge as white bulbs with a red non-conductive shielding from fuselage, and then two in the tail, on the vertical stabilizer at the top, middle of it, pointing 45 degrees backwards.
      These antennas are bulb like, and each covers about 90-100 degrees to each direction, giving about +/- 45-50 degree coverage vertically as well.
      The SPO-15 improved this by eliminating the dead zone, by additional two antennas. Example in the SU-27 these antennas are two just side of the air-intakes that gives the angle from front to the 90 degree sides, then at the rear both side of the "stinger" and then the two additional to give vertical detection is one just behind the canopy hinge, front of the airbrake, and the fourth is just below the pilot under the nose (either front of the front landing gear hatch or just aft from antenna set, don't remember which one it was).
      These two antennas above and below will always detect the emissions from above and below the aircraft. The system doesn't offer any directional information because the antenna set for that is pointing horizontally forward (in Su-24 there are four of these, offering a full 360 degree directional information) and so on when the emission is received past 60 degree you don't anymore get a direction information to the threat - just that "below you" or "above you".
      DCS doesn't model that properly but has just made a super simplified SPO-15 with incorrect behavior.
      So when flying with Flanker, Fulcrum or even Frogfoot, all have the SPO-15 with the additional information that what happens below or above and no blind zones.
      And this is not really a problem because you anyways need to roll to start maneuvering and that is when the side antennas or at least rear antenna gets separation so it can be told to pilot that is the radar ahead, straight below or at rear. And usually even that information is not useful if pilot can't get a LOS on the launcher as it can be anywhere.
      In DCS the SPO-15 above/below information should be separately lit when that is really above/below the airframe. It is fairly accurate for it at under nose, but the top one is little covered by the canopy so it have the slight dead zone directly forward to be telling the radar being above it.
      But at any given moment does the SPO-15 become "blind" as by turning this "60 degree blind zone" toward radar like DCS claims.

      @@paristo interesting information, thank you! out of curiosity where'd you find all these info? cus unless you can read Cyrillic there's not many primary sources to find this stuff

    • @paristo
      @paristo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@piketchupwarthog3574 There is a real Su-27SK (S is the first Serial production Su-27 and K means Export, so slightly downgraded) manual translated for Spanish, and someone did translate it to English via machine. But lots of information is from multiple other sources since couple decades, from pilots, cockpit videos, interviews and as well of course product procedures in Russian military expos and public materials.
      For decades only information that people at west had from SPO-15 was from Lock-On game, so DCS World today. And it has been slow to get information more about the system, but Eagle Dynamics still ignores SPO-15 because they likely can't anymore change FC3 planes or want to improve them at all, as it might lead people wanting X and Y as well.
      Example it is well known that SPO-15 is programmable. The system has programming boards that ground crew inserts to detect specific frequencies, and these frequencies are then grouped wanted manner, that are symbolized by the bottom row lights. In DCS those are now IIRC:
      Air Intercept radar
      Long range SAM
      Medium range SAM
      Short range/AAA
      AWACS
      And those are incorrect, as example NIKE radar system should be used as first symbol when it is expected to be on area. Then example F-14 and F-105 or so radars are grouped so it is either one (but not both as intelligence reports tell which one will be operating in area. A F-16 and F-4 can be joined as one, so again you know which one is coming. A combinations of ground radars and air radars is as well possible so you know what few different ones you are looking for.
      The SPO-10 and SPO-15 can't cover all possible frequencies there are, why in mission design phase proper cards are selected for threats that are assumed to be faced. This allows to make easy way to identify threat type, emission power (that is as well balanced properly for the lights, as bow they are all different ranges like half way is 50% radar max range and not the equal ones, example where top is when radar can get a lock or becomes a danger for launch range. So again pilot can visually detect that radar is at range where it can launch a missile. There have been conflicting information exactly how it is done but more prominent is that range is given with equal kilometer distance so just looking at the amount of bars tells X kilometers each, as there is 16 lights in a circle, last on left is an arrow/triangle (example one bar could be about 2 km, it would then be 2x16=32 km where Las would symbolize imminent distance under 2 km), so 15+1. There is a reason why it is a circular and why the aircraft nose has one inside and there is triangle at the end/start.
      in the real one www.secretprojects.co.uk/data/attachments/0/92-ee3804117ad99faf468543a7463fc24c.jpg
      The threat range lights are as well different sizes. At the right they are almost twice the size and at left they are much shorter and closer together.
      Here is example SPO-10 system.

You can always compensate slower look view with planning to move your head earlier, but you cannot allow bottleneck with your controls in combat
