You can do anything you put your mind to. I have special learning accommodations and school has always been challenging for me. 8 years after I promised to myself to work hard, I am now a PhD student at Walden University. You can do it!

because there are logical errors, "one of the men said, " i knew in order to change my life narrative... education was the "ONLY WAY" ... (paraphrased) but this is inaccurate, there are many ways to change your life for the better, this is just one way

Indeed, it's the journey and (most likely!) the struggle that characterizes it. Basically it's character building. Only the lucky few get top notch results (Nature, Science worthy...), and there's so many other variables besides experimental succes. The skills you learn are the most important! And even if you don't ever get your degree, you gained serious experience to take with you in your further career!

you don't need a PHD to change your life circumstances. I haven't heard a great reward for the phd from this conversation. You need a phd to get certain jobs, that's the only reason I see to get one. if you want to work in higher education you need a phd for some reason. I dont see practical reason to have a phd to be the dean of "campus activities" but thats the hoops they have to jump through. A phd in stem fields tend to be worth the effort, other fields not so much. I have masters degree and I'm sure I earn more money than most phds.

Depends entirely on what you want to do in life. Most things you can get by without a doctorate. There's a few jobs in higher education and research that require them. If you really want to be a researcher, you'll most likely end up doing the work of a PhD anyway and can look to a doctorate by publication review. It's mostly an acknowledgement of your expertise and specialization in a specific domain of knowledge and a public affirmation of your authoritative voice on the subject of your research.

That's not what he stated. He said he wanted to have a different story considering the hardships he had in his early life. He didn't say a PhD was necessary to do so. He said however that education was integral to changing his life, and so happened to earn a PhD. A PhD is hardly required to become both a good thinker, educated, and prepared within one's propesional pursuits. A PhD however is required if a person wishes to be either an expert in a discipline, or an academic and professor.

Nope, you have to go to a very prestigious brick&mortor. Walden is full of bullshit anyway. Currently writing my dissertation with them. Applying to other programs for a second doctorate following this bc a PhD from this school is worthless. Even though my dissertation and study will be published...my contribution will be worthless. Just an extra $150k of student loan debt.

@Gaelle Kercy The kicker is that my chair is the most distinguished scholar in his field. While this person is emeritus and still teaches at the uni they retired from, they also chair dissertations here. Despite the fact this will be known and that my study will be published, as I said, the endeavor will be worthless bc it will be an excerpt from a ‘Walden dissertation’.

Hi Pauline, unsure where you are in your journey. My path was informal science education first (museum, my own business), then teaching in high school for 3 years, started adjuncting at a local community college, I now am a senior instructor at one school and a university professor at another. Often, folks want to jump right in with no experience and this threatens to burn one out and/or feel overwhelmed or inadequate. With a Ph.D. soon in hand, Oct 22', even more doors will open. Many people that already have their PhDs have tried to talk me out of it. That motivated me even more. My advice for others reading this, if this isn't relevant to you anymore, is to work your way up. No rush, you'll get there.
