The key difference between professional doctorates like a EdD and PhD is that the PhD is an academic terminal degree and the EdD is a professional degree. The key issue is not what the material that you are covering in the programs, because they are often going to be similar, but it is the outcomes that you expect with these programs.
There are several major differences between EdD, DBA, and PhD programs:
Outcomes. You are likely going to have different career paths if you choose the EdD or DBA, in which you are going to be doing mostly teaching or administrative work. The PhD tends to focus on research output.
People. Often, the people that are in professional programs are going to be people that are doing a terminal degree part-time to advance their current career. The PhD is likely going to be a continuance of undergraduate studies.
Cost. Expect that professional programs like the EdD to cost a lot more than the PhD programs. The reason is that costs can often subsidized by doing research in a PhD.
What is the difference between the EdD and the DBA? Expect the EdD to be focused on academic administration or something along those lines. People with a DBA can go back into industry if they wish, or they can teach at a Business School.

David Maslach is a research professor of entrepreneurship, innovation, and business strategy, I discuss topics, such as behavioral science, strategy, innovation, and entrepreneurship, and apply these to my new peer proofreading and editing platform. Topics include the sharing economy, altruism, investing in technology, starting a business, and bounded rationality. My favorite videos pertain to incentives, goal setting, and learning from failure to drive behaviors such as weight loss, stopping telemarketers, creating novel technologies, and creating new movements.
r3ciprocity.com: Peer proofreading and editing platform
A new platform where you can earn credits by editing other people's documents. Use these credits to have your own work edited. If you do a good enough job, you can convert these credits to money.
The goal of the platform is to get people to 'pay it forward' and help other people out by creating incentives for people to give back.

Thanks for the great video! I started my Ph.D. in Adult Education earlier this year, and I start an EdD in Educational Leadership this fall (crazy, I know...). I'm interested to see the difference between the two programs regarding focus in research vs application. Have you heard about the movement to standardize the EdD? JHU and many others are currently involved.

I don't know. Let me and others know what you find out about this movement! Keep it up!

Hey I've completed a masters in tesol and am looking to begin my Ed.D in Literacy, Language and Culture next fall.. JHU was one school I was looking at for that (as well as Texas A&M and Indiana.. From some minor research I've done and a few lengthy phone calls to some schools, it appears the motivation behind standardizing this is simply to cash in on people like me who want the doctoral degree without having to quit my full time job... And like he says in the video, plenty of research has been done on who is willing (and more importantly, ABLE) to pay for that.. It makes sense in the end..! Are you doing both degrees simultaneously? I'm really curious to know more about your pursuits!

Austin, my experience with JHU is $$$$$$$$$. They know how to cash in while driving students over the edge of sanity. Your mileage may vary.

Amazing. Never met someone doing a PhD and EdD at the same time. That's a lot of work, but doable if part time for both. Or full time without working.
