  • A walk and wild camp I have been meaning to do for a good while. This was only my second time doing Skiddaw and I was keen to experience better conditions than my first visit. As it turned out, conditions were wonderful and this turned out to be my favourite wild camp of the year so far.

There are a lot of brilliant outdoor YT stations about these days and I think it is more difficult nowadays to find your own little niche. Wonderful. I did enjoy this video. I climbed Skiddaw in the mid 1960s when i was a teenager and hated every minute!!! We were half way up Jenkins Hill - which I had thought was Skiddaw, and then saw the peak of Skiddaw in the distance! Boy was I cross!! I've never been fond of climbing - a shame really but there we are. I admire people who do love a good climb. Me? I'd rather buy a postcard of the view from the summit!!

    • @ChrisJB
      @ChrisJB  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you. Although a bit of a slog, especially with a heavy rucksack on, I much preferred it on this trip over my first time as a student in 1992. I find Skiddaw interesting geologically too, more so than many of the other mountains in Lakeland. Best wishes, Chris 🙂

    Hi Chris. Another catch up for me from your channel and once again a stinking vid. Short but once again pithy with snapshot facts. Comparing spring 23 with last year, this years has been disastrous, very little outdoor adventure for me, especially on the cycle cos it’s been too bloody wet and especially windy but did manage to get a few camps in.
    Love your take up on the geological side of the outdoors. It should make us realise that an understanding of geology is the footnote and opening chapter to under every other preceding chapter of our understanding of the rest of the world of natural history. My A level in in falls way behind your tertiary educational knowledge and that’s why I really like watching your channel. Keep posting Chris and thanks again for another excellent one.

    • @ChrisJB
      @ChrisJB  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks again Ron. It's over a year ago now but I enjoyed this trip a great deal. For the time of year the weather was great. I also have to admit to being a touch apprehensive too, not having done a 3000 footer for so long beforehand but I felt in good shape on this walk.
      My time doing A Level Geology was a very happy one. In every other subject (apart from Geography too maybe), I was pretty mediocre but Geology suited me down to the ground and did a lot for my confidence at the time. Mr Jones, my teacher, was a good chap too.
      Let's hope the weather bucks up! Best wishes, Chris

      How do Kris and thanks. It was one of my favourite trips this, great conditions for the time of year. I noticed you've been getting a few dramatic camps in 👌. I'm still fighting the motivation issue and keep making excuses not to go. A decent spell of weather should sort me out. Bye for now, Chris

      @@ChrisJB That’s good to hear, sounds like you need to get yourself back up there or up in the hills to find that love again.
      Yeah had a couple of winter camps. Have another video out tonight at 6pm for Skybarrow Dodd. That’s another windy night but solid in my new Soulo, only bought it the night before.
      I’ve struggled with the motivation too so know it’s tough. If you fancy getting a camp in let me know. I’m a bugger for never planning but know it’s a good thing to do. Maybe going with someone it’ll help you go as you’re committed then.
      I’m free most of the time so let me know I’d be happy anywhere.

    Another top-notch adventure Chris. I have to say that you seem to be getting all the good weather that I am missing when I go out! 😁 I did get a good camp on Plover Hill off Pen-y-ghent last week though so not really complaining. 😉All the best.

      Hello Lee. It did cross my mind to do Penyghent and Plover Hill as an alternative to this if the weather conditions had been poor in the Lakes and decent in the Dales. It's deffo one on my list as I love Penyghent. I was jammy with the weather for sure. Thanks for watching and the generous comments pal.👍

      Hello Karen. My first choice would always be the Notch but if I think conditions might be more windy then the Scarp is a bit more robust. I like the Scarp in winter too on the long dark nights as there is more room. Best wishes, Chris.

    Excellent camp Chris , I think it’s about 20 years since I last did Skiddaw and the way you went 😂😂 it will have helped you feel tired for sure. It’s not often you get perfect conditions like that at those heights , pretty similar to my Robinson camp back in December . Tfs atb Dave ⛺️👍

    That weather window was amazing for the time of year wasn't it. I camped on kinder on the Thursday before mother's day, the mountain forecast for wind unbelievably, and probably first time I've seen it for kinder...said "calm!" The daytime temp was 17 and in the night after 9 o'clock it hovered around 2 then 11pm it read 0.6. In the morning at 5am, the overnight low my thermometer gave me was minus 1.6 and it was 0 then, by 7am when I was heading back down it was 14! Still not a breath of wind with a fantastic sunrise over stanage/Derwent edges.
    By the way, at night there was hundreds of small cream/brown moths everywhere...any idea what kind at that time of year on the high moors?
    Great video that Chris, cheers pal atb.

    • @ChrisJB
      @ChrisJB  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello John and thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. Indeed, the weather was nigh on perfect. The weather was a bit weird for me too. The wind got up a bit and it got very chilly whilst I was hanging around before putting the tent up. In the morning my Kestrel device said minus 2 but it really didn't feel that cold at all. Hmm, you've got me wondering about the moths. March is early for moths to be out so I should be able to narrow it down to a few species but will have to check my books. I'll see what I come up with. Best wishes, Chris

    • @johnd8538
      @johnd8538 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah that's what I thought Chris, I reckon they'd just recently hatched or whatever moths do, with daytime temps being so high. I bet a few perished in the night with it getting down below zero. I couldn't go anywhere with my head torch on without being plagued by them and had a few dead ones in the tent in the morning. I had the most wonderful night though on that one, no flappy tent noise just silence after the last sheffield/Manchester or vice versa had gone through edale valley. Oh and I've never seen a flock of curlew before but I startled about a dozen that took off all at once giving it that bubbling call they do as I got water from them two pond/tarn things just down from grindslow knoll. I did a bit a bit of research on them and found one small piece saying they were dug out for peat a long time ago.
      I saw the biggest frog or toad I've ever seen in one as I filled my katadyn up!! All good fun, the water from that source is almost clear, a good thing to know if you head up to the knoll via the direct route from edale village. The path is badly eroded, very steep dog legs 3/4 of the way up even steeper. Quickest way up I know and I've tried them all on the south side of kinder, about half an hour.

    • @ChrisJB
      @ChrisJB  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnd8538 It sounds like you had a very interesting camp. I like that info' about the peat diggings. We have similar areas close to home in the South Pennines. Strangely, I've yet to encounter a curlew this spring. It's a bit concerning as we do quite well for them round here normally. I'm still waiting to see my first swallow too. They seem late. Cheers, Chris
