I didn't know anything about this plant... I bought it for my nano tank that had 4 shrimp in it... a few months later i cant even see the water all i see is hornwart... but there are now 100 shrimp all over it.... its chaos... maybe good chaos i dont know! lol
I used a suction cup that had a 3/8 split ring on it. I put a loose bunch in the ring and stuck it on the glass towards the bottom, and it exploded up and out across the top, but the stems stay in one place and it looks planted
I loved hornwort, it actually is kind of beautiful when healthy and clean. I had a small clump that would grow leaps in bounds in my planted aquarium, you could see tons of oxygen bubbling off of it. It only sheds when you either don't have the lighting it needs or nutrients. The more light you have the more nutrients it needs too so you need to be mindful there but a cheap liquid fertilizer does wonders. My one tank was able to produce so much hornwort I could sell massive clumps every 2 days if anyone was buying lol but most of the time I'd trim massive chunks off of it and feed it to my large water turtle, seemed to love the stuff.
Ma'am, I really appreciate you and of course, "the Prof". Your video presence is growing with each one! Thank you both for sharing your opinions, incidentally, we rarely disagree.
I really like Hornwort, I have it in my goldfish pond and it provides shade and cover for the fish, I’m in the UK and it stays in the pond over the Autumn/Winter period when it will sink to the bottom and turn dark in colour and brittle to the touch, then comes back green again in the Spring/Summer. Brilliant plant 😊
I absolutely love my hornwort. I have it I'm my shrimp and neons tank. The stuff grows soooo fast , but I have to routinely break off chunks that aquire some hair algae. You covered all the basics ! Great video.
Great video....I was so hoping I could plant it though, because I need a tall plant right now for the left side if my 55g. When I get that, I'll finally have all live plants
I had trouble keeping hornwort. I wanted a floating plant for my guppy fry to hide in. Recently, I’ve had luck with a friend’s plant: Brazilian Pennywort. It looks pretty cool with lily pad-looking leaves. Very fast grower too.
i find in all my years fish that eat plants and food get way better color.. same for cardinia shrimp i had pale shrimpers they ate all my plants and became very colorful, dont worry hornworth grows so fast its ideal to use it as food as well
LOVE my Hornwort! I cultivate it in my Nano tanks so there's no algae, and put the excess into my Patio Pond, where it just thrives and gives the babies a hide. LOVE the Green!!
I've had the same problem. And you're right about the needles springing off like a Charlie Brown Christmas tree. Rotala does the same thing. On the 'bright side' I can grow duck weed 😕
Constant trimming works. When you notice part of the plant starts to brown, it's time to trim that part off and remove it or else it could create ammonia in your tank as well.
I have got some & if you want some, I can send you some it's not hard to grow like she said but goldfish will eat it. send me a message & I'll get back with you.
I use hornwort at a helping plant for new setups. I float it at the top and it takes the excess nutrients thus helps to get over diatom face much easily.
Well, pea puffers generally stay toward bottom of tank and hornwort does best floating at top but it will provide some nice cover to block out bright light. Hornwort also is helpful combatting algae and using up extra nutrients in the tank. 😊
Question.. can u use fishing line to make it into a soft ball and then attach the line to a rock. So it stays very lightly clumped together in one spot?
@thesmallscape i might! I just ordered 6 (2.4) show quality dumbo purple mosaic guppies (they havent shipped yet) and i dont want any fry to get eaten lol I have live plants already but definitely know i need the plants nice n thick to help the babies hide in
I’ve used hornwort in my Crayfish tank for 2 years. Fun fact: I plant in the sand and run a wavemaker (3 times a day for 45 minutes period). The plant is super healthy and adaptable. Just trim the plant when it gets too tall.
Well…great question! Most have never had any luck doing anything other than letting it float. Wherever it touches anything like driftwood, it tends to die.
I mentioned my floating plant in one of your other videos. I am not sure what it is but watching this video I am pretty sure it is hornwort. It is truly a hardy grower. After viewing this video I guess I will not try to plant it in the sub-straight. The important thing is it grows so easily and gives the fry a place to hide and live plants make the fish feel secure. Also as you say it helps to clean the water of nitrates. If I get to much it will go into the blender to make home made fish food.
I like my hornwort I have one that is beautiful planted it like a tree in my 55 barb tank looked like a Christmas tree ended up growing the whole corner like a tree got to the top now growing across the top
I haven't tried Hornwort, but I keep Brazilian Pennywort the same way, floating. I have to trim it back, monthly! Also, a great home for fry and shrimp!
Thanks so much for this video. I just bought my first Hornwort, and it's still in a bucket because I wasn't sure what to do with it. LOL So now I can throw it in some tanks and see what happens!
So glad I saw this! I had tje broght idea of planting the hornwort around perimeter of tank so it looks forget like then I saw your video and immediately bundled the ends again lol I'm a newbie and appreciate your content!!
I'm very keen to add some into my tank, however I don't want those snails and other parasites attached coming into the tank. How should I disinfect them?
Joanna - love your plant vids. I appreciate how you approach the conversation from a broad aquarist point of view. Definitely not going into any of my tanks, but I remember as a youngster that hornwort, Vals, amazon swords, and elodea were just about the only plants that were available at my LFS.
I have a 29 gallon aquarium and just bought some hornwort. I have water wisteria and Java fern. How often should I use plant fertilizer in the tank to ensure that the Java fern plant and water wisteria are doing well and thriving?
I did a search for Hornwort in a Betta forum and a some people said it tore their Betta's fins don't know if that is true though, like it could have been other things and the just though it was the Hornwort. A lot of people also said it was it took over the tank.
Like others, the needles on mine dropped and made a mess. It wouldn't be so bad, except it clogs up the gravel vac too! I much prefer pretty anubias even if they grow more slowly.
Thought it looked cool in petcos tank. Was like a thin funky dark Christmas tree. Dropped it in a plant quarantine tank and realized I’ve been warned to not buy this plant haha. So much for it going in my show piece tank. Will be cool for my goldfish grow out tank though maybe
Thx 4 the info. I did plant mine & was wondering what was going on with them, dropping needles & why my other plants aren't growing as fast as I thought they would. I do know that they were good 4 cleaning the water. I really can't float them in my nano tanks b/c I have the tiny Duckweed. So, I just may take them & put them in my reg tank.
Ya. We never have luck planting Hornwort, needles drop. It can also certainly suck a lot of nutrients from your water too, even at the expense of your other plants.
Great video Joanna!! 🌱 I enjoyed learning of all the pros but also the cons. You covered them all very well! I never see hornwort when I try to purchase at my LFS. Maybe due to some of the cons? Enjoy the long weekend!! 🇺🇸💥✨🎆🎉🇺🇸
Hum? I have both Bacopa & hornwort in my bait tank & giant jungle Val, but I have them in my barrel filter that is filtering my 110 gal stock tank & all 3 plant's are doing good & have had it for a month now.
Hey there. I appreciate your channel. I keep failing with hornwort. The needles make me sad and nervous. I thought about getting some again at the local pet store and float them in a floating basket to catch the needles. Is using a basket a bad idea?
I know this is a older vid, but can i use hornwort only floating in a nano tank so it doesn't rob nutrients from other plants. Will it help keep the tank clean?
You say you can't plant hornwort/coontail in the substrate? It grows naturally on the bottoms of pounds and lakes. I just harvested some from a pound that was on my lure. How can I make it do the same in my aquarium?
I'm not sure if we have it in Taiwan. After letting my water sit for 2 days with almond leaves I can get the water to stay non acidic for about a week so the only thing that seems to grow well is anubias I'm trying out some water lettuce I just figured out it doesn't like filter flow so when I want to use the filters I take out the water lettuce and let it sit in a bucket of water and then let the filter run for a few hours My landlord won't let me run all my filters and lights at once because the building is old so I just have a nice little container for the water lettuce and all my tanks and then I let the filters run and keep the lights on
One ' bad' thing about hornwort is that it takes in nutrients faster than other plants, I think. In my tank, the hornwort essentially killed all my other plants except the cabomba. On the upside, I now have this beautiful hornwort and cabomba-themed aquarium. My aquarium looks like a mini Sargesso Sea. 🥰🥰🥰 I was devastated though to have lost my water sprites. 🥲
doesn't shed in my tank. Just make sure there are enough nutrients. I have a bunch of platys that keep the hornwort growing like crazy, and the nitrates are still at 25+ lol
Hornwort, becomes a thorn when you got filters But worth when you've got a curious betta... I'm glad that it can't be planted and get uprooted all the time by the little guy. I think it works best in a cycled tank than a new tank with fluctuating parameters 😅
Firstly, thank you, Joanne, for all your great videos. However I do have a question about a banana plant which seems to be ‘multiplying’. A couple of the leaves floating on the surface are growing roots at a rapid rate, as are a couple of leaves which have been severed from their stalks. I have no idea what is going to happen next, or if I need to do something so that these new growths survive. Have you had any experience with this? It’s fascinating to watch, but I need to know if there is something I need to do so they don’t exhaust their energy and die.
Hi Joanna I love hornwort, but always have trouble with them. I wonder if having hard water is the key. All my tanks are soil/sand substrate combinations. The dkh is always maxed out. It works great for my Saltwater tanks but freshwater just grows bad stuff. Any advice is appreciated, thank you
I just bought horn wart from my local pet store, it was labeled as a bunch plant and has a band at the bottom. In the store it was planted. Question, should I take the band off? And can I attach it to an aquarium decoration so that it stays in place? I currently have the bunch tucked into the hole of a log. The bottom of the plant hangs down into the middle of the log. Good idea, bad idea?
Hi! I would take the band off, it’s usually a stinker planting it anywhere - it seems anywhere the stem touches, the needles will fall off. But it grows so fast you could just trim that part off, worst case. ☺️
I didn’t know it needed to float. That would explain why I couldn’t grow it long ago. I love the look of it and was so disappointed. I bought a couple of bunches for my porch pond last year. Much to my surprise it was still going strong after a couple of freezes this autumn, so I pulled some out and put in my 20 gallon. The pond has been iced over a few times since, so I’ll go look tomorrow to see if any is still alive.
Hi, usually when you buy plants from store, their roots are covered with wool. The guy at store told me that all parts in the wool should be trimmed off. Is it recommended for all plants that grow longer? loke hydrilla, hornwart, mayaca?
Thank you Joanna. Plants confuse me. I have some and it’s hard to understand their needs for thriving. If I out them in the substrate, they don’t do well. I have some easy Planters from Aquarium Coop but not all plants do well in them according to Cory’s website. I put them in not knowing that only certain types of plants can go in those planters. Some are not good for the planters. I have Anubias in a planter and it hasn’t grown at all.
Anubias grows great in the planters, just keep in mind they are extremely slow growing and it generally takes them a few months for them to start. If you move them, that process will start all over again.
Hi Bonnie! I understand, it takes time. For Anubias, as long as the rhizome isn’t buried in the substrate you’re good. With just a new leaf created every 3-4 weeks, I find the Anubias nana petite to be more rewarding to watch grow. That’s why I just love the floaters - hornwort, bacopa, salvinia minima and frogbit. Fast to super fast growers that just...float. ☺️
For some reason Hornwort does not grow for me. I bought ten plants and they die in the tanks. The only one that survived for me is the one in my ten tote gallon tank outside in full sun. My sword tank, Amazon sword plants thrive in it, but, the hornwort does not live in the tank, just dies. Any ideas?
Why are so many people using commercial products instead of setting up a secondary tank with proper filter material made out of real live plants that catch all excess nutrients inside the water? Seems to me like the aquarium hobby has become more about short-term beautification and much less about the incredible potential it can provide for creativity as a functioning machine. I see a lot of videos promote stuff that is nonsense, like every plant will help with waste inside the aquariums but they never tell you that the ones that grow faster will also do a better job at it. It's also funny to watch those aquariums full of plants with accelerated growth due to CO2 injection which also helps deplete the tank of nutrients faster since there is nothing to decompose that plant material and get it back into the soil/water, so later people are running crazy trying to figure out the "trace" elements that are missing in their aquariums. It's 2022 and it seems like the aquarium hobby should have been made much simpler by now, or is it just me? I know I am crazy, I see it every day in the mirror lol

I'm trying out some water lettuce I just figured out it doesn't like filter flow so when I want to use the filters I take out the water lettuce and let it sit in a bucket of water and then let the filter run for a few hours
My landlord won't let me run all my filters and lights at once because the building is old so I just have a nice little container for the water lettuce and all my tanks and then I let the filters run and keep the lights on
Interesting how we all have issues we deal with and come up with solutions too. ☺️
I just got new plant's I don't know what they are where can I show a picture so people can tell yof they need to be put into the substance or not
One ' bad' thing about hornwort is that it takes in nutrients faster than other plants, I think. In my tank, the hornwort essentially killed all my other plants except the cabomba.
On the upside, I now have this beautiful hornwort and cabomba-themed aquarium. My aquarium looks like a mini Sargesso Sea. 🥰🥰🥰
I was devastated though to have lost my water sprites. 🥲
Cool looking plant but I have a hard enough time keeping up with my dogs’ shedding. Don’t need to deal with plants shedding as well 😁
doesn't shed in my tank. Just make sure there are enough nutrients. I have a bunch of platys that keep the hornwort growing like crazy, and the nitrates are still at 25+ lol
Hornwort, becomes a thorn when you got filters
But worth when you've got a curious betta...
Any advice is appreciated, thank you
Hi Joseph! I think hard water is the key - that’s the usual issue most folks deal with.
Thank you for this info, I am going to try peat moss pellets in a bag and add them to a filter to see What change it can make.
@@thesmallscape thank you for the advice ☺️
I didn’t know it needed to float. That would explain why I couldn’t grow it long ago. I love the look of it and was so disappointed.
I bought a couple of bunches for my porch pond last year. Much to my surprise it was still going strong after a couple of freezes this autumn, so I pulled some out and put in my 20 gallon. The pond has been iced over a few times since, so I’ll go look tomorrow to see if any is still alive.
Do these plants have roots
Hi, usually when you buy plants from store, their roots are covered with wool. The guy at store told me that all parts in the wool should be trimmed off. Is it recommended for all plants that grow longer? loke hydrilla, hornwart, mayaca?
Have you ever had an issue with hair algae and Horwort?
Still waiting for mine to acclimate to my tank. It’s making a mess, but I hear it should be fine after a month.
Is it okay for hornwoth if the aerator keep on?
cant it tolerate aquarium salt?
( 1 table spoon in a 10G )
Can you use Liquid Carbon from Aquarium Coop with it?
Love you
Thank you Joanna.
I can only seem to keep it with my goldfish. It just melts in my tropical tank. Water comes from the same tap.
