Heroes Of Might & Magic 3 Review | Necropolis Apologism | Malina's Favourite

  • After nearly 3 months of utmostly ardeous combat versus his own stunted brain and editorial block, Schwalbe had finally finished the review of one of the most fanatically loved games out there, even 23 years after it's original release: Heroes Of Might And Magic 3.
    Will Schwalbe get things right?
    Will an angry mob find his location and burn it down?
    Will he be labeled a disgusting neckbearded necropolis apologist?
    And how come Paul Anthony Romero thought wearing silver-chrome sportswear to a Heroes Orchestra concert was a good idea, seriously, Paul, this is such an eyesore I cringed watching from across the blasted concert hall-

      Well - all I can say to that is: "good luck", heh.
      I hope the review itself was entertaining, sir?
      Also, the 5th Anniversary of Heroes Orchestra concert (2nd one, to be precise) was a joy. Feel free to pass my thanks to the others.

      Just had a thought:
      I think Heroes Chronicles chapters, especially the original four, could be a good way to learn playing HOMM3. Decent, at the very least.
      They are usually quite easy (in comparison), and there's a lot of tutorial events more or less interwoven into their narratives in the first missions, to suggest certain ideas forming the basics of strategy on the world map.
      THAT SAID, unfortunatelly Chronicles don't work with HD Mod - or should I say, the other way around. I *did* however manage to mod those campaigns in, hence portraits of certain heroes are those of Tarnum, the Immortal Hero throughout the video. (specifically those that replace Gelu, Dracon and Christian being the most notorious, I believe)
      All campaigns of Chronicles - 8 of them - are sold together on GOG. But once again, without HD mod, one would miss a lot of quality of life improvements, and well... hope you enjoy 800x600 resolution gaming in Anno Domini 2022. :D (personally I don't mind, a bitch to handle capturing footage for unfortunatelly).
      Have a good day. ^^

    Ah, I've been looking for a thorough, long review of this classic. Discovered HoMM last year myself and was surprised how little long form analysis there is about this highly regarded masterpiece, so this was such a joy to watch.
    Definitely subscribing for more! I like your clear voiceover and snappy editing. Script flows like butter and I learned a few new things. Thank you for this!

    Certain combine artifacts play a huge role at certain parts of the game.
    Grabbing the resource generating cornucopia allows you to quickly build higher tier mage guilds and upgraded buildings.
    The dragon artifact is kind of bad, as yeah the nuclear option works, but there is a better one.
    The angelic artifact allows you to combine the best race creatures without worry of moral screwing you over, and it gives a decent boost to stats.
    The cloak of the undead king allows the undead to steam roll over everyone by farming liches.
    Etc Etc Etc

    How to succesfully review homm3: Use the gog version, shit on the steam version, say game good.
    On an unrelated note, the mentioned but not reviewed HotA mod not only adds number ranges to the lots and legions on enemies, it also cuts necromancy in half, and necropolis still is considered one of, if not the strongest, factions in multiplayer.

    • @Schwalbe1728

      @@Schwalbe1728 Was't trying to bully you into making a HotA video there, not that i'd be opposed to even more people learning about that awesome mod. Your comment about the amount of expected enemies being expressed with those words, just felt like a very fitting point to write that comment, and throw in a little perspective of how powerful necromancy is in the right hands of my own. Who knows, when the mod finally gets it's next big update, with a second new town and campaign, maybe you change your mind 😂

      Oh no worries, I didn't take it this way - I am just explaining. As for necropolis... I mentioned this time and time again, I am not playing this game on pro multiplayer level: hot seats at most. And I am yet to see Necropolis being this harbinger of doom and demise others paint it as. All it takes is map being a dick and other players knowing a certain player should be prioritised in bullying from my experience. But to be clear - I do recognize I am somewhat on my own in this view.
      But seriously - this review took 3 months and resulted in a burnout that, I'm pretty sure, is kicking my arse even now. (Speaking of which, I need to get back to editing the currnet two I have on the bench...)
      HotA seems like an interesting topic, yes, however - I have a massive backlog, and am MASSIVELY behind with... well, everything, again, thanks to the aforementioned burnout: in the description of the video you should be able to find a list of games I am considering reviewing, and frankly (no offense) most of them seem more interesting for me to dissect than HotA. Which reminds me, I should add HoMM2 to the list - having Red-Dragonned the Archibald campaign recently was... an experience lol.
      Also, take a look at some comments, and tell me - was I not incorrect? xD
      I appreciate the comments nevertheless - I hope that you found the video entertaining at the very least and that the other videos will be found even moreso than this one. :)

    If you think necro is not such a big deal, let me tell you this: in the vanilla game in pvp they were hands down the most broken faction, mostly because of necromancy. The snowball effect coupled with stuff like skeleton transformer, cheap buff spells and the fact that skeletons being tier1 units allowed you to not focus on expensive late game dwellings and on a mage guild instead, made the strategy incredibly viable. Not only that, but if you'd stumble around a necro hero in a tavern or a prison as a non necro player, chances are that you're gonna dump whatever strategy you were going for and level up that hero immediately. In HOTA, the fan made expansion where most of the pvp community hangs around, the necromancy ability has been CUT IN HALF and necro is still the best faction by a large margin, only matched by conflux.

I'd trust him more than Lezz Trusst, because of his dingy basement and pizza box mountain, and because he'd know the only advance is to load Kwrazi Karprang into the trebuchet and fire him at the enemy. Out of the dingy basements of nerds grow mushrooms, pizza box mountains, and real life governments. Tell me I'm wrong, go on tell me...

    16:20 never been curb-stomped by Thant with a doomstack of 4k skellies in mid month 2, have you. Doesn't matter if you kill 2000, he reanimates them in 3 turns. In larger maps multi, necro is just incredibly OP because of snowballing.

    • @Schwalbe1728
      @Schwalbe1728  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mid month 2. So... around 6 to 7 weeks. Four thousand skeletons. I mean, I'm sure there are people out there who can do exactly that, but I'm not entirely sure about that, chief.
      Should I presume you exaggerate?
      Cause if that's the case, that's fair. I admit - I did not think about animate dead.
      And yes. You are correct. I haven't been curb-stomped like that. It's rare for me to play multiplayer, which I mentioned at least twice (I believe so, at least).
      That said, I feel like that would mean someone would likely have one main "hammer" of an army. Meaning, there is a good possibility to outmanouvre that main army, especially given the fact they would need to clean the house for such ridiculous numbers, meaning there isn't much left to deter or slow down scouts and marauding parties.
      Besides... I'd argue such a doom stack is a viable choice for Slow, after which one would target his stronger units?
      These are my musings, like I said - I didn't have a miscalculation that would allow a necro player to gather such an army. :D
      PS: Hey, I appreciate that your comment provided some additional arguments and perspectives. I seriously didn't think about raising spells. ^^
      Hope that the review was, aside from the Necropolis Question, enjoyable or at least entertaining?

    Unpopular opinion (well, preference): Heroes 4 is favorite in the series. But mostly because I like the art design, music and heros feel more like real ppl.

    • @Schwalbe1728
      @Schwalbe1728  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Personally I find the 4th very interesting - NWC threw A LOT of very experimental ideas into the mix, like the advanced classes or caravan system.
      As for the art style - I dont agree myself. I could see a preference if not for one simple fact - I dunno why, but I have actual trouble telling what's-what a lot of the time; which is disappointing, cause crisp graphics or 2 and 3 were always an important factor to me, or should I say - the high level of overall readability.
      But hey - unpopular or not, I can respect your opinion and see your point, heh. Like I said, 4 *is* very interesting in it's gameplay design. And "Hope" from 4 is one of my favourite homm tracks. :)

      didn't like the artstyle all that much but loved the storytelling of the campaigns. those pagelong dialogue boxes held some of the most intriguing stories of any video game. also the music was very good. kinda sad they didn't put some more work into the artstyle, it could have been great if they had but iirc during that time the company began to shit the bed financially which became most obvious when playing the second expansion of 4.

    Hoo boy will you get your angry comments!
    Your assessment of the units doesn't really account for pvp or for their ability to fuck certain tactics the hell up.
    For example, liches, that didn't get their own voiced , can fuck up your whole army if you blob it up. They're the proper version of magogs.
    And that the l i z a r d s have nearly every creature do something nasty to the enemy, from the dragonflies debuffing your enemies and destroying their buffs to basiliscs making the enemy loose turns by turning stacks to stone on hit to wyverns potentially halving enemy stacks maximum health, to hydras just hitting everything around them with no retaliation...

    • @Schwalbe1728
      @Schwalbe1728  ปีที่แล้ว

      I cannot wait!
      Liches AOE works only against living creatures, meaning it has the same limitations of Death Gaze, except the damage is normally calculated. Also, if you blob your units seeing liches on the other side - you only have yourself to blame.
      You know what, Dragonflies could use a highlight I guess - not exactly for the debuff though. For being infuriatingly fast. That debuff isn't that strong, because it requires the rest of the army to deal good damage (they don't) or care (bovine terrors).
      And unlike death gaze, the turn to stone thing isn't happening frequently enough to me.
      Maybe I shouldn't have said their roster sucks - I will agree. But outside of the Gorgons you won't be doing nearly enough damage with units alone.

    • @kogorun
      @kogorun ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Schwalbe1728
      >only living creatures
      My man, living creatures are most of any given roster in the game. Including the archers.
      Fortress' unique passives are mostly about outlasting the enemy, in theme with the factions.
      Monarch Wyverns put a debuff that lowers enemy max health 10% with every turn for 3 turns. And it stacks up to 50%.
      Basiliscs have solid stats for a t4 (average base damage is only 1 less than ogres, speed starts at 5 and gets up to 7, 40 health when upgraded), their passive chance is 20% per strike for the petrification and lasts 3 turns.
      Dragonflies' speed is their primary asset, but don't discount the ability to remove a l l buffs from an enemy stack pretty much at your leisure.
      And, also, I wanna say that while skellies are painfully average, you can get a lot of them. Most 1 tier units start to become blobs of pain when you can get them up to ~200ish numbers, simply because those mediocre stats get really multiplied. Those stacks are fragile, yes, but if you rock around 600 skeletons, it'll take some work to neutralise them for good.
