I left the field and worked other regular jobs. 20 years later, my student loans have doubled in size because of interest and using the deferment payments etc. I guess I do appreciate my degree because I use the basis of it for my own film production etc. But I honestly learned 95 percent of what I know about that on TH-cam.

    That’s why I buy every piece of film gear I own used(apart from camera bodies). Most of the time I can use the piece of gear for a yr or so until I don’t need it and then sell it for the same amount or more. Saves a lot of money that would have went to renting the equipment!

  • @KamenRamenStudios
    @KamenRamenStudios 4 ปีที่แล้ว +102

    I remember my uncle telling me, "Look at an expensive item cost, divide that by how much you know you will actually use, and then you know it's worth your money."
    That thinking saved me from a few lenses, a drone, and other equipment.

    • @cooloox
      @cooloox 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hmm, something is very wrong with that equation LMAO. It means the more you'll use something, the less it is worth to you. Maybe he meant divide the number of times you'll use it by its price as a percentage (x100) ? That way, if you use it 100 times it's worth it's price. If you use it 200 times it was worth double its price, etc. If you only use it 10 times, it was worth 10% of its price.

    • @KamenRamenStudios
      @KamenRamenStudios 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@cooloox It's not meant to be actual math.
      The thought is if I use a 2000 dollar item once, I wasted it.
      If I divide it by a higher number of uses, I look at it more as money and more times I would have invested toward it.

I've been going back through some classics and these historic cinematographers seldom use extreme bokeh unless depicting loneliness or isolation. Otherwise, it has limited narrative function, it hides excellent set design and lighting.

    I have thought very seriously about buying a gimbal and a drone. This video has helped change my mind about it.
    Thanks so much and keep up the awesome videos!

    Love the honesty and positive vibes man 👍🏼 Biggest purchase regret for me so far is SLR Magic Cineprimes for Fuji X-mount. They're amazing lenses, but I went away from my usual mindset of buying lenses that I can use even when I switch cameras. Long-story-short I upgraded cameras, and now here I am having to buy lenses for the new camera since I can only use SLR Magics on a Fuji 🤦🏻‍♂️

    When I was first buying my gear, I fell in love with the Canon T7i, great auto focus, blah, blah, blah... I need 2 cameras for interviews. I made the second canon the Canon SL2, same great quality for video, give up some on photos... Now whenever I do interviews, I'm setting up 2 different cameras with different controls. Should have spent the extra $150 and had 2 T7i cameras.

    An off-brand shoulder rig from Amazon that ended up simply hurting my back on a 12-hour event shoot and not being very stable. I stopped buying cheap experimental products from Amazon after that!
    I am excited about my Mavic Air though, if it were nice every day I'd fly it every day, as I'm in NJ, the shore capital of the world! Filming boardwalks, marinas, cities, harbors and abandoned theme parks on the beach never gets old. My Recommendation on your Mavic is to use it as a mini-vacation from getting work done when you're stressed out, remember that little dude wants to do what it does best just as much as you do.

    Buying a DSLR when I didn't have time to use it.
    I bought the Canon 70D and it sat on my shelf for the vast majority of its life. Only came out several times and took some memorable photos. I bought it for the video except barely shot any videos with it.
    I've now upgraded to Sony a6400 and shoot video every day. Reason being is that I've made a commitment to do so. I love it!

Also important to mention: buying things to make a video look better and forgetting to put them on the bill like flowers, xmas beards or suits, masks, balloons, backgrounds..

    The only thing I regret with my filmmaking is not buying the best I could afford from the start, things like lower end lenses, tripods, cameras etc cost me more in the long run as I had to upgrade after a year of owning them because they didn’t fit my needs. I’ve probably spent 2x what I needed to because of this. But I guess that’s the process!

    As much as I love my SmallRig shoulder rig, I've only used it on one short film and I really didn't even need it for that. Definitely could've saved that $300+. Also I bought a cheap $100 slider that literally is worse than going handheld, so add that to the list. Also, I know the DJI ring is different, but I honestly love my SmallRig ring. Yes, you loose a couple inches at the bottom and can't get right down to the ground, but at least you can still get low shots with one hand on a top handle and one hand on the side. I also love being able to mount basically whatever I want to it. The biggest reason I got mine was for the feet. I did pay a premium for the actual SmallRig feet, but I think it was 100% worth it. It's a hefty setup, but I've had the best footage since adding the ring!

    Thank you for taking the time to share this list bro. Im sure a lot of us were bitting nails, praying our purchases were not on the list 😂😂. You hit me twice man lol. I blame it on strategic, but well crafted marketing. Companies know that gear is the talk of the town, and all they need is one video that correctly demonstrates how that piece of gear will change your life. It is usually easy for me to justify why I need a certain piece of gear. I found that without that strong accountability, or voice of reason there is nothing to stop me neither. I have made some ridiculous purchases, but after watching a Dave Ramsey rant about every dollar, I realized I need to be more creative on a budget. The end of last year I decided to simplify things, and I just started getting getting rid of stuff. I think it has made me more clear headed as a creative, and even more driven to produce content. Renting can be a solid choice, if you can’t see ROI on the item you are thinking of buying. I actually just picked up a GoPro 7 black for around $190, and now debating if I should return it after watching this lol. I feel like I would use it, but man I’m all about saving for the bigger picture these days (C500 Mk ii). Keep up the hard work man, you don’t get established by always playing it safe, but also don’t use that as a stepping stone to buy a $50,000 camera lol. Thanks again for sharing your honest opinion.

I definitely feel you on not using some stuff that I thought was going to revolutionize my filmmaking, but I also make it a point to go out and gear test every once in a while. Gets me more comfortable with my gear and helps me decide why I'm not using it (be it lenses, audio recorders/mics, etc.) I've rediscovered vintage lenses that I thought I didn't like, but after playing with them found an appreciation for them. I fly my old Phantom II a lot more now than when I bought it because I'm finally comfortable with it. If I specifically test it out and spend some time with it, and I still don't like it/feel like I'll use it, that's when it goes away. Just my 2 cents.

    I'm really regret that I bought an IKEA MARKUS chair, as you have in the background. It looks very stylish, I was crazy about the purchase. But after many hours of editing, I realized that I became very stooped. I had a back pain. You sit in it like in a hammock, your spine falls back, while a chair pushes your shoulders forward. In addition, the headrest pushes your head forward too. As a result, you are sitting in a shrimp pose. In the end, I decided to sell it. I hate it because it fooled my expectations. Now I’ve chosen a more comfortable one, which can be better adjusted to my back, which allows my spine and shoulders to be straight. And it is 3 times cheaper.

    Back when gimbals were getting popular I went out and bought one for my Canon t3i and 5dmkii. I think it was CameTV? It was a pretty good gimbal at the time, but the footage was always shotty and I was burning through sensors doing constant video so I had a dislike for dslr video footage and I hated the idea of trying to focus on the fly and disturbing the gimbal. Right after I made that purchase, DJI released the original Osmo. This changed things for me forever. I rarely use the gimbals nowadays anyways, but when I do, they look great and function well for the their purpose. - Dji Osmo Pro for some more professional looking stuff like weddings and b-roll on bigger sets, Osmo original for real estate, Osmo Pocket for travel and hobbies. Each serves a purpose. Thank you Dji.

    Definitely the gimbal thing. Man, the setup, the adjustments... it's so time-consuming. Also, cheap lenses. Now, I'm down to 4 lenses, and they're all decent quality. I used to just buy a lens on sale on Amazon or B&H lol. Back to the gimbal though, my Moza air 2 just sits there. I've tried them all... and they all kinda suck. Now, I know why some of the biggest filmmakers on YT say to stay away. I just listened to some hype-masters on here. Last thing would be watching so many sponsored videos of YTers saying that you need to buy a product in order to make it. I fell into that trap earlier on in my hobby, and I can't believe that some of them are still growing on here. Blows my mind.

    Crane V2 works amazing for me, even for professional purposes. Great to have side by side with a Sony camera.

    I’m glad you did this video😃❗️filmmakers always gravitate to #filmmakinggear but your story (content) is way more important. Less is more💯

    DJI Osmo+ with the Z-Axis attachment. I’d bring it with me when traveling and basically just looked like I was walking around- eternally confused- holding a robot chicken.
