There are various reasons, sometimes fishing line on the prop shafts, or very silty or sandy water can tear up seals. I can't point to one particular cause due there are many. These units have a robust design like their outdrives.
Hi Ted, We have enjoyed your videos and they have helped us and friends of us tremendously. We just sold our Navigator boat and are looking at buying a Regal with Volvo Penta IPS. My question is, most of the boats we look at have rusty bolts all around on top of the large clamping ring on the IPS. I was wondering if you find that a concern. Thanks again.
The bolts are steel so they will corrode. As long as there is not severe corrosion (major flaking rust on the bolt heads, I find this is normal. Unfortunately in many applications this is an area that is overlooked for a "corrosion spray" treatment that should be applied periodically.
Hello Ted ,Like very much your Chanel. I work on an Azimut 77s with 3 IPS 1200. One of them after driving 2 /3 hours when docking losses transmission pressure and goes to safe mode. Been cleaning the filter wich there some black moisture grease . Then goes to normal again. But when sailing 2/3 hours there always something on the filter. We had 3 new gear boxes +\- 300 hours ago. Oils changed but seals check. Would you know ? Thank you
Do you need to keep adding oil to the drive? Not sure what "black Moisture grease" means. Does the lube smell burnt? Is it back in color or milky white?
@@tedsmarinerepair8956 thank you my friend for answering . I only add oil because when open the filter there always a bit coming out. I could send a video or photo by mail or what’s up. If it is ok with you🙏
@@tedsmarinerepair8956 ok Ted thank you my friend💪 I m currently bringing back the boat to Portugal 🇵🇹 from a two weeks trip around Spain . There just a a few people to talk to about IPS systems . Been having some problems since I’m with him . Seen your vids and you are 👌👌👌👌
Lots of great information. A little off topic, but with a forward facing propeller system, it seems they would easier to foul? Can a rope cutter be installed between the two props or some other solution? Thanks
the electric motor that vectors the pod through gear reduction is interesting. i thought it wouldve been hydraulic. surely the motor would draw a lot of power
Good question! Actually it is a frequency driven motor which spins a pair of planetary gear sets that have a high mechanical reduction gear ratio. So its really a small industrial motor which consumes far less energy than you would think.
Lots of great info on your channel. I’m a surveyor trying to learn more details about the IPS drives. Had one today with moderate amount of moisture in the fluid. Is there a common place for mixture? Thanks
Moderate is a relative term. Any water is never a good thing. I can't state a common point of water intrusion without inspection (misleading info is never good). I would suggest the owner have a VP dealer determine the water intrusion location and have it repaired.
Very interesting videos! Thank you for posting!! I was looking for the possible cause I found my IPS leaked out all the oil but I cannot see from there. 2 pictures attached here ibb.co/VtV2Nxm ibb.co/JF6NJ1y Any suggestion?? Thank you
I never realized that the two counterotating propellers were so different, both in baldes design and pitch. Wonder why.
Thank you for the reply. I have a 6 month old boat and the tranmission oil has a lot of water in it. Warranty repair but still a big deal.
Yes Unfortunate, but good its under warranty.👍
Very good video. What is the most likely cause of water in the transmission oil?

I Love it!!!! Your Awesome 👏!!!! Thanks for the Great 👍 information

Are PODS reliable? I'm reading a lot of issues with water in oil and seal issues, is it accurate? Debating whether I should go with shafts instead
@@crgeorge1 Those issues have been resolved. Those were a problem with early seal designs.
Hi
Were could i find a workshop manual for my IPS B
Lots of great information. A little off topic, but with a forward facing propeller system, it seems they would easier to foul? Can a rope cutter be installed between the two props or some other solution?

That is a good question. As far as I know all smaller VP fwd drives ( non commercial) do not have a line cutter option.
@@tedsmarinerepair8956 Line cutters for the IPS 1 part # 21686492 and I can help you with that.

They all have cuters between the two props.

What protects the probs from hitting something in the water? They are really exposed.
