Editors: Thank you for including "seizure warnings". I believe that I've seen this channel, or other LTT channels, do that before and it's genuinely great to see. I have epilepsy, and while typically this type of stuff won't cause a seizure, at least in me, it can do things like make me feel sick or disoriented for hours at a time. For TH-cam videos, it's almost never really an issue, but it's so great to see a channel pop up a warning - just in case.

    • @neruneri
      @neruneri 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

Yeah, I've never had a seizure triggered this way, but it absolutely has caused discomfort before. It's a pretty nice and useful thing that they warn about it beforehand, just as good practice. It might not be strictly necessary in every case, but I appreciate the effort.

If he's not, such as myself, 99% of the time he'll likely not have any issues when going through videos. :) Small devices will be the key for helping him learn how to navigate this side of the internet though, since it's easy to drop the device or look away if he's bothered by it. When he's older, he'll have it all mostly figured out though! @@michaeljgaughan

According to a Tom’s Hardware article, a company called General Procurement (based in Santa Ana, CA) licenses the brand for the US market - so their products have nothing to do with the car company or SK Hynix. They also sell cheap DRAM-less SSDs, mini PCs, and tablets. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen this laptop design sold under other brands (Chuwi, Gateway, etc.). They probably all come from the same ODM.

Despite the same name Hyundai and the similar logotypes, Hyundai Technology has nothing to do with Hyundai Motors Group or Hyundai Group. Websites of both corporate groups do not list Hyundai Technology. After some research(although I couldn't find much) one news article claims that Hyundai Technology is using the brand that was left out during the lawsuit between Hyundai Construction(under Hyundai Motors Group) + Hyundai Heavy Industries(under Hyundai Group) and Hyundai IBT(which had become independent from Hyundai Group) when IBT tried to register "Hyundai Technology" as their new brand name. I cannot find how this brand ended up being used by an American company. It might be technically legal to use the brand but it seems like Hyundai Technology is infringing the history of Hyundai Group despite not being related.

This chassis / tooling...it feels like it came from the same factory as the Pinebook Pro - but with a HDMI port and a different CPU soldered onto the board. It might even be the same IPS panel, as the panel on my Pinebook Pro is also controlled via PWM and with similar colour accuracy and brightness. And I've worked with many laptops before, even real crappy ones, but that whine when adjusting the brightness is just awful.
Now that you've also mentioned the keyboard typing experience, that really matches the PBP. I have typed on so many laptop keyboards now and that keyboard is still one of the best i've ever typed on.

I love watching budget-laptop reviews! Since it has an SSD slot available, I'd like to see how usable it might be in the long run, say, three or five years from now.
For instance, I'm still using an AMD-e2 1800 powered Asus that I bought back in 2013. Despite being a budget machine back then, I was able to keep it usable over time and now serves mostly as a tv box and as a guinea-pig PC.
Never underestimate low-powered budget laptops. With enough ingenuity and the right optimisations, they can serve for a good while.
Ps.: I once dared to benchmark the E2 1800 on cinebench r23 and got 123 pts on multithread, don't remember how "little" it was on single thread mode. I was not amazed for the low score but rather at how much I've done over the years with such an underpowered machine.

I dont think ive seen a PWM backlight as bad as that in years!
From my experience pwm is fine if the period is short enough and, considering a bargain basement standard mcu, with a pwm output pin can manage a 100us period very easily, (10kHz on/off rate with varying duty) and, even the cheapest of processors have pwm timer output pins capable of orders of magnitude higher switching frequencies doubt this was them cheaping out.
To have a pwm screen that flickers that much you'd need a period closer if not exceeding 1ms, where the limits of persistence of vision starts to becomes more apparent. For it to be this bad on a modern device this was likely caused by a hardware oversight that was then bodged with a software hack, like bit-bashing the pwm rather than using a dedicated pwm timer output pin.
how a company as big as hyundai would settle for a sub optimal software hack over a new board revision is beyond me, but then again might not be worth the r and d cost in fixing given the products price point.

I got my dad pretty much this exact laptop, like its 100% the same design, just instead of hyndai its a random-letters chinese brand, the little door has an actual (noname) ssd behind it, 12 gigs of ram (the reason i actually got it, i used to tell my parents to just get whatever is cheapest because they really dont do anything that would require actual hardware but really low ram always made the things freeze up all the time) and i think maybe the processor is slightly faster since it came with vanilla full windows (zero bloatware!) but still some kind of celeron N4xxx variant. Also i think the monitor is better because i couldnt see any flickering, but idk how much the recording highlighted that in this video.
Hes pretty happy with it, the keyboard is actually great (although slightly hampered because instead of changing the layout they just ship the US layout with rubber overlays for different layouts, but my dad despite his job literally being "writing long essays" still does "hunt and peck" so it doesnt matter). I would never get him a Chromebook, he kinda barely knows how to use windows after using it for decades, if he was on chrome os i probably would have to do 24/7 tech support without having any experience with it lol.

It's slow, but I'm not as worried about dropping it off a ladder, lol -- I use it for things like checking network switches and aligning security cameras. I'm a bit confused, Windows in "S mode" is just a setting. Windows 10 S doesn't exist anymore in the latest versions of the OS, and updating Windows 10 S should automatically take you to a state where its just a switch that enables and disables Microsoft Store-only installations (and pretty much nothing else). So not sure what the criticism on this is about.

well n4020 is a dual core processor. No wonder. But don't just dismiss the whole cheapo windows laptop category, if you get something with say N5000 or N5100 or better, with 8GB of ram it is actually quite usable while keeping the decent battery life AND being completely silent due to passive cooling. On some occasions that's a huge plus.
Also with board this small this could be an 7 or 8 inch windows tablet. I do miss those and there's not a single new one on the market, not even from weird brands.

I was expecting Alex to rate the keyboard a B considering it sounds like "it's really good for a laptop of this price range" and when he went for A- I was blown away because that means it's gotta be better than keyboards from machines that are often $1000+ or even more.
Linus being a crabby mang during the speaker test is great ^_^-b
Getting non-S Windows is actually easy. Settings -> Update & Security -> Activation, Switch to Windows 10 Home/Pro "Go to Store", Switch out of S Mode -> Get, and you're done. It looks like it's not even a download to do it, just a setting change.
When I'm looking for a cheap AF laptop I always have a couple things to look out for. I stay away from Intel N-series chips or the AMD analogue (I forget what it's called) and I want to be able to upgrade RAM and storage. This thing apparently lets you upgrade storage which is not a guarantee at this price point.

I saw Hyundai's Tech website and noticed a gaming line, though it's only barebone gaming towers with only PSUs and RGB fans on it.
If only they made a dedicated pre-built gaming PC line, then name the gaming lineup "N-Line" (as a nod to the high-performance line of cars from Hyundai's Automotive Division).
If they improved their quality of Desktops and Laptops (like they do their cars) and give them mid to high tier performance at a competitive price, as an automotive enthusiast I would buy any of their "N-Line" PC in a heartbeat (as to become an owner of a modern gaming PC with automotive-themed branding).

Anytime anyone mentions that they are wanting to buy a laptop brand new, I always tell them to please stay away from ones with the 'Intel Inside' on it as those are usually Celerons and are generally more trouble than what they are worth. They are also stupidly expensive in general stores that sell electronics in South Africa, where you could potentially pay up to R6000 (thats 300 USD with todays conversion, which is just dumb)
You are better off buying a laptop with a 3rd gen i5 at that point, and doing an SSD and RAM upgrade for a little more leg room.
