Great to find this here, I've admired their outstanding performance of Canteloupe Island from a Japanese festival (Live Under the Sky) the same summer for many years, but thought it was a one-off and that they'd never made any more shows with this great line-up. Here we have a complete gig...thanks!
A showcase of Genius. Herbie and Wayne stretch the song form, creating a vista of formerly unimaginable visions and emotions. Their storytelling capacity is outrageous, the level of abstract coherence is a true presentation of the human capacity of the spirit to travel beyond the world of cliche and self- imposed constrictions.the love and respect they have for one another is always apparent, and their ability to escape improvisational roadblocks is legendary.
I was there when this concert was held. Actually, Footprints was played 2nd from the start, but a sound error on stage occurred so this tune was cut from this broadcast( maybe).
@@louise_rose Yes I'd say that he's up there with Jack DeJohnette, Harvey Mason, Alphonse Mouzon in terms of sheer imagination, drive and technique. Hell, they're ALL brilliant musicians, and Herbie picks the best fellow-playets, simply because such an accomplished genius himself can AFFORD to pick and choose. In case you're interested and HAVEN'T heard Herbie play with Jack AND Pat Metheny (Dave Holland on bass) then could I be presumptuous and recommend Holland's own composition Shadow Dance (this video provided by SafaJah) AND yet another version of Cantaloupe Island
(Accidentally sent above reply prematurely!!). I was about to write that the tastiest version of Cantaloupe Island that I've EVER heard, by this same group of Herbie, the Jack, Pat and Dave, is the video supplied by Drummerworld. That's not a bad estimate on my part:. it gets FAR more comments and likes than an alternative version that they played. (What I call Herbie's green shirt version; during the seriously tasty version he's wearing something that looks like a teapot warmer, unfortunately. Still doesn't detract from his sheer, RIVETING genius!!
@@ianbuxton8332 You've seen and heard the amazing version of Cantaloupe Island from Live Under the Sky, near Tokyo, by the same quartet as in your video, or so I hope? That one was actually what made me look up the video here, it's a take I've admired for a decade or so. There are several uploads of it, the one I keep returning to is this one: th-cam.com/video/JixfzsQWZ8c/w-d-xo.html¨ The amount of joyful musicianship and great interplay in those fourteen minutes is just staggering!
👏🏾
Thanks Ron!

Glorious.
The mood and sound implosions that shroud the mysteries of their music-making stint with Miles are always present.
Love these four.
