When I was still a teenager I went to the blue note in nyc to see the ray brown trio. I’m a bass player and this was going to be my first time seeing ray. The band also featured Stanley Turrentine who I was a big fan of. At the time time I haven’t yet heard of Gene Harris, but he was the one who left a lasting impression on me. His playing was so in the pocket, and he played with such great dynamics. Of all great great jazz pianist I’ve seen no one moved me the way his playing did. 36 years later I still get goose bumps thinking of his performance.
