It is certainly not an overstatement when one says that these Jazzicians are better than "best". Michael Brecker was the epitome of Organic Real Jazz - be it Rock Jazz, Fusion, Straight-ahead Jazz, Spiritual Jazz, Pop Jazz... And Michael Brecker could have tailored a Ballad into such greatness as never before heard or seen - in his time. He never stopped growing as a musician - and as a person of noble character and exemplary citizenship. Michael lives! Long live Michael!
in Thieves, scofield kills me, and I think, how do you beat that?! then only..ONLY Brecker can keep the energy as high and augment it. unfunkin-believable. just an incredible performance. the best ever, right there.
I'm smiling because everybody has commented on Hancock, Brecker, Scofield (and why not) but as a percussionist (or when placed next to Mr Alias, someone who hits things) I have to say that Don Alias is pure, understated brilliance. A fantastic line up and so very sad to know that both Don Alias and the incomparable Michael Brecker are no longer with us.
OFF. THE. HOOK! All of them. But Jack D, who is so incredibly varied in his ability to be greater than the task before him, is ON FIRE here, esp under Herbie! Love it.
This is album is just as filthy as it is underrated. Hancock, Brecker, Scofield,Holland, DeJohnette...To capture it live on video is beyond words....Magic.
"New York Minute": This might be the deepest, most dramatic and theatrical solo I've ever heard Michael Brecker take. What a journey -- from first note to last!
Saw this gig in Madrid, '97. Stood, leaning on the front edge of the stage whilst MB tore it up! The band were tired out, but MB shouted "C'mon!!" and led them into the fire. A stunning gig.
Absolutely mind blowing! All solos made sense and were pieces of genius. And, behind them, the steady hand of Messers. Dejohnette and Alias. Incredible work by Mr. Holland. Everytime I hear this I choose a player to follow more closely. This time was him. What a bass player!
Im trying to clear all the Herbie concerts from my watchlater playlist and every week, when I watch one of them, the algo suggests a new one I havent watched. Its never ending ❤
This is one of the greatest line-ups i have ever seen .And i was a little bit worried about scofield with Hancock, but it turned out great.Jack DeJohnette and Holland is a great duo.I wish Michael Brecker was still alive...
Jarkko Palokas are you serious? I couldn't sleep a wink last night worrying about those two. And that happens a few times a week at least. You're not concerned?
You didn't think Sco could play the changes? You should check out some other guitar players Hancock has teamed up w/: Black bird McKnght, Wah Wah Watson, Santana, Lionel Loueke - all great in their own right, but definitely not exactly traditional Jazz players either. So I say other than Metheny, Scofield is the closest thing to 'Jazz guitar' Herbie's ever had in any of his bands. Plus Sco is the only one of the aforementioned bunch who has ever gigged extensively and recorded w/Miles. Not even Pat Meth had that honor. So I say that's also a factor for Sco landing this gig.
as a cat fan I am of course delighted by the animation of the Festival organizers as well as the Festival logo, well done Montreal. Oh, and by the way, there was a congregation of sm serious Jazz Cats on the stage that night ;-)
What a pleasant coincidence to find this video. Joé! (Canarian Expression) Great job, a lesson in what Jazz is and its contribution to the standards. To learn in the academies
..just checking this out today for the first time today..incredible vibes, deep journeys..every player conversing at the highest level..required listening in my humble opinion..the body language tells the true story..Jonny Sco and Dave Holland in a mini duet within the ensemble during New York Minute..more like New York Lifetime and then they bring it down into Michael Brecker’s searching solo!..and I’m just getting started..stay safe..New York October 20, 2020...
John Ciccantelli No, but if you listen closely to several albums where both players appear, especially Herbie Hancock's "The New Standard". You will hear the unique combination.
+Jack DeJohnette As Pat Metheny so eloquently put it, to follow a Michael Brecker solo was always an exceedingly hard task...so I suspect Brecker was frequently the last soloist in the row...in order to avoid an Anti-Climax.
Man Herbie....the poly rhtjm got poly rhythms. Great blend of voicing and intense melodic texture from connection to each player's mode of congruity in how they piece together exotic phrasing of melodic colors in brilliant layers of harmonic synergy
I can't get enough of Herbie, Holland, DeJohnette, and Don Alias. Brecker and Scholfield add the finishing touch. Herbie, Holland, DeJohnette with Pat Metheny back in 91 is also great. Another Herbie great is at Newport Jazz in 2008 with Holland, Chris Potter, and a phenominal drummer I can't remember his name. Again Herbie Hancock in my opinion is the greatest all around keyboard player. Michael Brecker, Don Alias, Pat Metheny playing with Jaco and Joni Mitchell on Shadow and lights in 1979 is also Awesome especially Brecker and Jaco trading chops.
@@boxingfan2233 The subtle differences in taste. I prefer Pat with Herbie. Herbie with anybody is great. Don Alias played drums on the Shadow and lights gig with Joni, Pat, Jaco and Michael.
..he’s burning 🔥 and this kind of ensemble allows a great player to expand even more..!!..amazing stuff, required listening in my humble opinion..Dave Holland and Jack De laying some boss groove here..wow..New York October 20, 2020..
@@robbfrank4141 Scofield really started growing on me in the last like 5 years or so.... I kinda can't get enough of him now lol. Have you heard the album "Groove Elation?" Check it out. Oh and what about his album with Metheny?? KILLER! cheers mate 😉
Jack Dejohnette's ride cymbal- both its actual sound, light and crisp.. and especially how he plays it- is to me what modern jazz drums should sound like.
I'm burning all my musical instruments and let myself sink in a sea of humility
Great times in the studio producing The New Standard with Herbie. RIP MB, DA.

Les poids lourds que j'adore. Merci...
Mr DeJohnette just flows. You can feel it. The invisible groove that sustain those monsters.
Doesn't he though? Always does. Ouch!

I couldn't stop laughing while reading that. It was like the most over the top clishé ever...
But that doesn't change the fact that it is true
Great piano player himself!
True dat
I love hearing the bass so clearly.
Great bass player Dave Holland
@@zu0832 unbelievable. He’s great on this
John Schofield's guitar solo is just tops.
Brecker is the God of Saxophone!!!!!!!!!!!

yes, don alias was brilliant here and everywhere
Dude throws down! Rhythm, women, whatever he encounters!
yeah man! he vrings so many interesting sound colors and ideas into the whole thing. stunning!❤
Love him with David Sanborn
OFF. THE. HOOK! All of them. But Jack D, who is so incredibly varied in his ability to be greater than the task before him, is ON FIRE here, esp under Herbie! Love it.
Jack and Herbie have always gelled so perfectly together ... Ever since the mid-80s, at least.
Best live jazz band ever assembled.
No words...just silence and claps for this!
This is album is just as filthy as it is underrated. Hancock, Brecker, Scofield,Holland, DeJohnette...To capture it live on video is beyond words....Magic.
Meeting of the Gods!
Effing Jack and Dave together again!
Unmatched until today. This music stands the test of time!
I mixed Front of House for this tour, and I knew the first night this was truly going to be a Historic lineup.much fun.
Twenty three years on and this music is still transcendent ! It lifts us up. Thank you gentlemen all.
That groove at the end - Herbie in total bliss - I just wanted it to go on forever.
Herbie Hancock is a living musician who can play all the notes on a keyboard, in a single key.
+David Koon Chromatic and diminished scales!
Absolutely.
+Drivethebeat and atonal voicings
+David Koon Damn right!

Solos on 'New York Minute absolutely ferocious: Hancock, Sco, Brecker.
I am endlessly blown away by all these guys, but have you EVER heard a semi acoustic bass sound that good? I could cry 😢
100% acoustic base
@@diegofigueroaalcorta5155 Except for the pickup, which is Electric 😉

Even with a broken string Sco rock's on ;-) GREAT !!
Each spirit made a beautiful contribution to the pieces . Mike is a C- Train disciple with his own style. Truly one of the best of the best.
Herbie New York Minute solo...amazing
the depth that mr alias adds to this performance with his congas shouldn’t be overlooked

Humanity - let’s do much more of this, and much less of hate, war, racism,

The only way to follow an awesome Scofield solo, with a Brecker solo.
Jack DeJohnette There is also, an inimitable combination of DeJohnette with Holland.

Couldn't be claiming Scofield is that awesome. Scofield is fast, but his solos are uninteresting.
this is the most burning friggin' band!! gyatalmighty!! wow, man....
I wish I'd seen this HH tour..what a band...same thing w/ the 'Parallel Realities' tour/band , back in 1990.
just ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Holy Macarony!

BTW, Some calssy jazzfaces in this vid :-)

I LOVE SCOFIELD.
Great playing. Scofield very impressive!
wonderfull six!
Herbie, jack, a dave swingin' forever young
Wow! Herbie kills it here.
Super grupo!! Todos músicos fantásticos!!
Scofield is a Giant!
Nunki Ascella he looks like he's the same height as the others. Are the village folk safe?
I'm really impressed how brecker started his first solo. I mean, he started quite melodic, playing slow... but man, what lines he played!
Extraordinario grupo.
Pure cream of the crop.
Fantastic drive and emotions)) SUPERRRRRRRRRb))))
Over twenty years later this sounds better than ever..
definetely more than pure talent!
This is so close to my heart… it all sounds amazing, otherworldly, love the album too!
Really sounds good !! Masters !!
True musicians, using the basics and building on them in unison.

wow.... i would pay a pretty penny to c this show.....
Masters of the Realm
Unless you resurrect some musicians from the dead I dont think its possible to get a better lineup than this.
Yeah, just leave the guitar out altogether and give Herbie double solos 👍
Emmet Cohen might be able to put together a decent contender, but yes
ah man! ❤
When monsters get together, this happens.
Hancock can group together any musicians he likes, just like Miles could.
It is against the law to be this good!
maaaad guitar solo by Sco in Thieves in The Temple!!!
Pure magic...Oh yeah
Brilliant! Timeless!
20.00 in is incredible ,!!
Holy Fing wow that rich bass called me sprinting from the laundry room and Scofield is spot on with it
Wait ! Did scofield break a string during his solo in "thieves in the temple" and carried on playing that magnificent stuff??
he sure did ;-)
YES
How would anyone dare take solo after Brecker? I’m not even talking technique. The emotional content of his playing is so overwhelming.
