From South Africa and having followed Gatland's amazing (previous) success Wales' story:
To me, somewhere along the way he lost his mojo.
Did he rely (too) heavily on certain squad-members to build such initial success? Was he (and Welsh management) guilty of not bringing in new, young talent (and heroes) for 'the next 10 years'?
Where I noticed he lost his mojo (or did he ever have it, versus just managing a talented squad?): He was (because of his success with Wales) appointed as B&I Lions coach to tour South Africa.
Even before they arrived in South Africa, it was quite clear that there was some complete confusion about the style of rugby they (the Lions) planned to play. There was a mixture of "beasts" and beauties".
Was he confused? Or was it that Rassie Erasmus confused him? By then it was already clear that Erasmus was next-level in match-planning. "Should we be beauty or beast this weekend?" and "I don't care how inexperienced or how old the player is, he is clearly worthy".
Once in South Africa, (a) the Lions' team selections never made sense and (b) Erasmus (intentionally or unintentionally) rubbed Gatland up the wrong way, leaving Gatland to look like a grumpy old man.
Ever since that Lions-team-selection and then their play, this is what I see when I look at Gatland (similar to Eddie Jones): An old, grumpy man that has lost his mojo.
      It happens to us all...

@@kobusg7460it's tempting to personalize a lot of these things, but the reality is seldom so neat. Welsh rugby has been a basket case for years, their national union is dysfunctional and corrupt, and their provinces are in utter disarray. Similarly, the B&I Lions are a circus, no pun intended. Gatland's previous stints with the amalgamated side benefitted from the presence of Andy Farrell and Graham Rowntree, but at their best his Lions teams played the same very basic, heavily defensive, fundamental rugby that has been Gatland's signature since his time with Waikato in the NPC. On that last tour he was competing with Gregor Townsend for influence over the team and the coaching ticket never clicked, which was reflected on the field. Gatland himself has never been an innovator, and like Squidge says his methods and tactics are sinply outdated. Add to that the absence of Shaun Edwards from the backroom staff, the relative paucity of talent coming through the Welsh ranks, the ongoing saga of the provincial unions and their desperate results in the URC, it's beyond any one coach to solve this Rubix cube of a team.

As a Wasps fan through and through....Gatlamd should be regarded as one of the best coaches ever along with Woodward, Farrell and Hansen. Nothing makes me happier as an Englishman than when we have got the better of Wales especially in the 2008 to 2019 years. He nurtured Wales greatest ever era of players and in terms of coaching, changed the games 20 years ago. But the game has gotten ahead of him. Wales need a miracle and the fault isn't with Gatland. It's the same with England, one good win against France last week and Ireland last year sugar coats a lot. I feel bad for Wales as there isn't a greater rugby country. They deserve better. But Gats should never have come back. He's the greatest coach Wales and the Lions have ever had..let the man rest now

His leaving will not change ANY of that.
May God have mercy on our rugby souls...

Happy for Matt Sherratt to get the temporary job who I think has been excellent this season so far for Cardiff and has a great relationship with the Cardiff based players but I do think that is the correct decision as I don't want to see all his hard work undone at Cardiff. The WRU now need to pull out their brains (if they have any) and really think hard about the next coach and who is going to turn it around for us.
As for Gatland, I'm gutted for him but this just couldn't continue. Sure, he's absolutely not responsible for the mess Welsh rugby is in but as the last 2 years of being in charge of Wales he has just kept making mistake after mistake and made the situation far worse than it already is.

This is a tragic way to end the Gatland and Wales story. At the end of the Autumn, I finally reached the point I thought the time was up. It's just how directionless we look. I see so many saying that it's not his fault, and so much of the current predicment lies at the feet of the wru, but we're not getting better, we're getting worse and for those here and now performance related issues, Gatland is responsible.

I have a lot of time for Gatland. He had a near impossible job here, as will whoever takes over from him. He was an easy target when the real blame lies with the WRU and its junketing, arrogant leadership. Not paying players, misoginy, a development system put together on the cheap - instead of what Italy and Ireland for example have developed. And don't give me the geography argument, both the above countries are bigger geographically than Wales. We should be thanking Gatland for all his work in such difficult conditions.

His player management has been dreadful post 2023 World Cup.
    - Dumping players as quickly as he picked them (Winnett, Mann, Llewellyn, Martin, Lloyd etc).
    - Throwing them under the bus. E.g. suggesting that Alex Mann said "I now know what a professional environment is like and what it should be like."; Criticising players after their review of him, saying that they don't know what a winning environment looks like, implying that their feedback means nothing and will not be taken on board.
    - Infinite centre combinations.
    - Picking Cory Hill after all the shit that happened with him, only to drop him last minute
    - Sam Costelow being subbed onto the wing (this one is as literal bad management as you can get)
    - Playing guys out of position, which ends up in them being major talking points of the tournament with masses of pressure piled on them. (Ben Thomas, Nick Tompkins)
There are many more things that I'm probably forgetting.
He was a great coach for us in the past, but I have a hard time feeling bad for him. The environment he created in the past year must have been horrible for the players.
The best time for him to go was right after the 2023 World Cup. The second best time is now.

From Ireland the view of Gatland has always been complex. Irish rugby was dead in the 90s and Gatland seemed the man to save it until the IRFU dropped him. It was galling to see his success with wasps and wales before the Irish teams came good so it was always that bit nicer to take down Wales.
The current run is not fully his fault, he did make mistakes and his return to the wales setup will go down as a bad decision but the wru also really needed reform to support rugby in wales going forward.
Ultimately he can retire as one of the most successful coaches of the northern hemisphere but I think it is time to finish now.
Could take or leave him seeing out the championship to the end but it is over now. I will miss beating him but I wont miss losing to him

Great analysis guys, love your “work smarter, not harder”. Too many coaches are locked into the old style’ it’s what they grew up with, but isn’t something to help them succeed going forward. It’s a shame it hasn’t worked but he let himself be soft soaped by the WRFU about funding, staff relations etc
He has been exposed as having no empathy, a degree of misogyny and possessing a very narrow focus

Lot of similarities to Australia over the last few years. Cheika comes to mind for me. No question he is a fantastic coach, but when the environment doesn’t suit the coach, he can fall in form like a player can. I bet if Gatland like Cheika had the ideal circumstances for them he would still be winning and competitive. As an Aussie, plenty of sympathy your guys way 🤝

The WRU is beyond a joke and it's very little to do with any coaching set up. The system looks to be rotting and has been for years in Wales from what I can see.
In my opinion it's the executives that should've been sacked ages ago given the amount of failure they've resided over.
Changing coaches constantly hasn't done Wales any good for a long time but has cost extortionate amounts of money. Investment in grass roots, proper talent and squad depth is the only way we can compete, but that is unlikely to happen when ex players, mates and dads have coaching or other prominent positions across the game.

It's been like it for 20 odd years.
I've seen nepotism and favouritism stifling class players and allowing bang average to get chosen for development.
One year my regional development (at a juniors level) team had 13 out of 30 squad members from one team because the coach of the academy for that season was the coach of that particular team. They were mid table of a mid tier league but he was still able to select nearly half of his squad from his own crap side 😂 He had potentially hundreds of players in the leagues overall, and would've easily had 60 players from outside his team who would've been selected by their clubs to go up for selection (my club only sent I think 3 players that year out of their squad of 30ish).
This was close to 20 years ago but I have little faith much has changed seeing how entrenched the culture is of local clubs relying on volunteering with little funding, which allows individual personalities to take over and have too much influence.

Much respect to Warren Gatland. But moving forward now I would like to see Cheika in for a short term gain (he's not a long term coach), with Adam Jones in backroom staff, not just for scrum knowledge but culture as well. Perhaps time of Rob Howley to move on now as well.
I think it's important to acknowledge these guys have overseen the greatest Welsh team of the last 30 - 40 years, but also that it's now time for something new in how we manage the team, and that the WRU need a wholesale rethink of how money is spent in the union.

  • @isquish

In fairness, those players didn't disappear overnight. They weren't unavailable through a one off serious injury. If anything they held on too long and the WRU and their coaches waited too long to blood the replacements. I don't think it's a lack of talent, I think it's a lack of planning, a lack of care (maybe competence) in game management with the WRU. I remember hearing that all the Welsh regions had been saddled with £1m plus debts after covid. That's just never going to fly. It's horrible losing to Wales but it's awful for rugby in the northern hemisphere to see where Welsh Rugby is right now.

    • @Fordmister
      @Fordmister 5 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

tbf the regions being saddled with an uncompetitive finance model is absolutely a core part of the problem, as while you don't need the regions winning every competition you at least need a competitive environment to help them kick on.
I mean look at Rio Dyer. Some might argue he's rightly been left out of this squad due to a lack of form (personally id have picked him anyway but I digress) but that ignores the core conceit that the reason he's so out of form is because decades of chronic underinvestment in the dragons have left them with a complete lack of decent ball carriers outside of Wainwright, an inability to consistently punch the gainline (which in the modern game is a death sentence) which leads to the attack not functioning a Rio getting next to no ball or when he does get it he can either barely do anything with it or is so cold due to barely having decent ball all year he makes sub optimal choices. Put some money into the dragons pack and Dyer becomes a better player almost instantly. a few months of playing behind that pack and he's back to his best.
You can see that happening pretty consistently to all the young talent Wales has been trying to bring though over the past few years (save for Jack Morgan but that kids a freak of nature that seeming cannot be held back ever) and the regions are only just starting to get on top of it (aside from the dragons but it does sound like they are going on a massive recruitment drive this year and a lot of this seasons problems are tied back to a mess left behind after the club went back into private ownership and culture fixes behind the scenes that had gone under the radar while it as still owned by the WRU)

Saffa living in wales for the past decade. Simply put, Wales does not have the quality of players to be a t1 nation any longer.
As great as Gatland was, youth development and the game at lower levels is barren and barely being kept alive. Over the past decade living here, there seems to be less people getting involved in the sport at a younger age, then with this shrinking pool of professional players, as a country there just isnt enough there. Then to take what is there and make it grow, there doesnt seem to be much if any plans on doing so (or at least i cannot see it).
We wont see Wales be a power again until the next generation, or the one after im afraid. i may be proven wrong.
as a saffa i remember the dark days before Rassie came back. But there is a difference betwen both countries. 1st, sheer numbers. 2, many of the players that have gone onto win the past 2 world cups - significant numbers were already there on the team. so a new coach could come in and work a miracle, but who does wales have that can walk in and do that

Sad times for Welsh rugby and Warren personally, I'm sure. The problems go deeper than the coach, but something had to give after some pretty abject performances. Gatland's re-appointment following the panic-firing of Wayne Pivac was the product of a childish impulse to return to a confort zone of predictable mediocrity, when fresh thinking and perspectives were needed. Whatever the WRU do next, for the love of God, do not go with Michael Chieka. You might get a couple of good results in his first year in charge, but Wales will be a Tier 2 rugby nation by the time he's done.

Unfortunately I can't see the general picture improving until the WRU itself is reformed. And as many in rugby in (south) Wales still don't see why their old fashioned attitudes are a problem, this is unlikely to happen.
