WOW! I just found Don Ross because the new Pandora station "Leo Kottke Radio" that I started pulled Don up as similar to Leo. I have been listening to Leo and others for forty years and had never even heard of Don! Guess I should get out of the house more. I like Don's work very much already! The full bar harmonics are really cool. (Non standard tuning helps.) I'm looking forward to hearing a lot more of Don's work and your TH-cam comments will help me see where you all are at.
Yeah. I love this song and Don as a guitar player. This song in duet with Andy McKee is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard in my life...honestly.
Don Ross has a very very gifted right hand. He's a superb guitarist and composer indeed. I wonder how he composed this piece... there's something in the way he strum, pluck and tap his stings, very intricated... I love this piece... I actually heard this piece from one of our Narada albums..
Ha! I love Don Ross. I live quite close to where this was recorded. Well, the closest town over and I've seen his old house before. He moved away a while ago, though. :(
Awesome harmonics demonstration at the 3:00. He is doing a clinic as you can see from the whiteboard in back of him. He can still rock that song out!!!
I wonder how much don would want for G-lessons hehe i wish for his "groove" and feeling every day. There really is noone like him, watch out don, i'm coming for your skills, and you won't even know what hit ya ;) all the best=)
Actually, a lot of my friends love his music too. I also don't understand why other guitarists push ahead of him. Maybe this is just Don Ross taking it slow, who knows. It doesn't matter because we like his music and he is still around to make more of it.
you know what's great about don ross... you know it's him from the first 2 bars. Michael Hedges isn't even that defined stylistically. I've heard a lot of songs that I thought simply couldn't be hedges, but sure enough they were hedges. Don Ross, man, you've got the most distinct voice the acoustic guitar has ever seen. Amazing! 5/5
I would recommend slightly larger strings for any alternate tunings. For most guitars .012's or .013's work well. They're also easier for fingerpicking than really light strings. It will tune fine, just make sure to tune it last. If you try to tune your high-E up to F# before the others are tuned down you will probably break at least one string everytime. But if you tune low-E to B and the others down it will relieve a lot of the tension on the neck. Hope this helps! Rock on!
This is a great song. The weird thing for me is when he goes to the chord modulation, all I hear is is that 70's tune; Sooner Or Later, Love Is Gonna Get Ya. Anyone else hear that too? It's a riot! Still, an awesome tune that's executed wonderfully.
So I had 2 tabs up, Facebook and TH-cam. I had The Human Abstract pulled up on TH-cam, but it was paused at the moment. Saw this video on Andy Mckee's Facebook, clicked on it, it pulled up another tab. Needless to say, I exited out of the Human Abstract video.
i learned this song awhile ago, but i havent played it since, because it wears out my high e too fast! lol i went through 3 learning it, only because i retuned my guitar when i got tired of working on the song...
he's like a giant wookie with a guitar. brilliant guitarist on a more serious note, saw him live in south sheilds about a week ago with andy mckee. the best live performance ive ever seen.
It's tuned up. It's possible to do it with standard gauge strings, but if you're really interested in playing this song use a heavier string for the E/F#. I had a 14 on my guitar and it took it over a month to snap even when tuning in and out of the F# all the time. (I play a lot, so yours might last longer) If you detune and capo it you're liable to get buzz. @BryantFC- Don does use a baritone, but not for this song. I sincerely doubt you can take the B on a baritone to an F#
Hi guitarmusic1, are you sure about that tuning ... and could you explain a little more ... love that tune ...and would love to play it ... but the tuning has me really confused...
played in this tuning a lot, never broken a string just make sure to depress the high string with your right hand as you tune up with the left, at the 3rd fret or so u shouldnt have any issues
Dang....how in the world did he manage to get the high E up to an F#? The G string and high E are the 2 hardest strings to tune any higher. It would be easier to tune the B string to a D than tune the E up to an F#...unless he tuned it down to get to the F#?
you mean michael hedges 60s covers? those are entertaining! like leo kottke. i think part of don rosss style is how he gets so many sounds out of the instrument. he sounds really different when he plays a different guitar because hes using it to the limit. heavy wood!
just build a custom string gauge from existing strings, and there you go...something like .09 (or .08) .12 .23 .34 .48 .60 (i'm making it up at the moment, but something like that should be fine, .60 is quite big but necessary for a B..)
Ahahahaha, that was a good laugh. Thanks man, I needed that. But on a more serious note, I think it reminds me more of a magical land of leprechauns that give you their gold when you kick them in the balls.
slight twist, leave it, slight twist leave, slight twist, leave it, check it, needs more, slight twist, getting higher, almost an F now, but more, twist more, leave it for a second, little bbit more PING!!! GOD DAMN IT!!! Another one
all i can say is that being able to play the song start to finish aint too difficult, mastering and being one with it when youe palying is the hard part
after all these years, still one of my all time favourite guitar pieces
I love how nonchalant he is, tuning while playing, shrugging off mistakes and continuing, trying new stuff. He is such a creative and pro.
There were no mistakes... it's HIS song.
This is the best version of this song i know of,
partly for how much clearer the harmonics ring out.
This man is amazing. This has to be my favorite acoustic song
What is wrong with 204k people watching this and not hitting the like button? This is an incredible piece of music

1 of the most underated guitarist ... Legend?!!!

I really love this old footage.
I love this song its a great song and...and
HE TUNED IT IN THE MID. OF SONG...
Yeah. I love this song and Don as a guitar player. This song in duet with Andy McKee is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard in my life...honestly.
I will always love this tune. What marvelous playing.
Thank you dear Brian for sharing this beautiful video.
Thank you dear friend for your amazing creation.
5*****
hugs from the heart.
farnoosh
I can't believe you got thumbs down for that. Your statement is true of almost all of Don's songs.
I can picture it as the intro to a show like Full House... and I love it!
Don Ross has a very very gifted right hand. He's a superb guitarist and composer indeed. I wonder how he composed this piece... there's something in the way he strum, pluck and tap his stings, very intricated... I love this piece... I actually heard this piece from one of our Narada albums..
This song cheers me up every time I hear it
Cant stop listening
Ha! I love Don Ross. I live quite close to where this was recorded. Well, the closest town over and I've seen his old house before. He moved away a while ago, though. :(
Very kind of you to respond guitarmusic1 ... I really appreciate the guidance ... take care ...
This song is beautiful.
this is such a wicked song, love don ross music :)

So Good !!!!
I got my girlfriend and her friend into it and they listen to it like every day. I've done my work, but I shall continue to spread
Anyone know the tuning for this song, please reply if you do.
Cheers
This guy is my hero.
I can see where Andy Mckee's style of play is derived from. Although its very distinctive you can hear the roots in Don's style.

...How can a song be this pretty...?
Great video.
yeah that is unbelievable
i learned this song awhile ago, but i havent played it since, because it wears out my high e too fast! lol i went through 3 learning it, only because i retuned my guitar when i got tired of working on the song...

DON ROSS IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!
amazing! tryin to learn this song now but i cant get that right hand beat that much :|
don ross is amazin

@BryantFC- Don does use a baritone, but not for this song. I sincerely doubt you can take the B on a baritone to an F#
i get that sometimes too but ive gotten very good responses from some too!
is there an alternative tuning you can use for this song?
WOW!!!
what string gauges would you use for this tuning then???
Awesome !!! No doubt, live is better ! Gloucester UK '08 28th Nov, i will never forget that amazing evening with Mr. Mckee !!
Hi guitarmusic1, are you sure about that tuning ... and could you explain a little more ... love that tune ...and would love to play it ... but the tuning has me really confused...
sounds good
I wish I could play like him.
Kiiiiing of his Guitar :D
how do you tune your high E up to F# without having it break?
Anyone know how he picks those harmonic 12th fret triplets at the start? I have the tablature and this is driving me crazy
black magic
he should make a dvd/blue ray concert.
He and Andy do a duet version on thier new CD
played in this tuning a lot, never broken a string just make sure to depress the high string with your right hand as you tune up with the left, at the 3rd fret or so u shouldnt have any issues
@tsubasaISfun Ummm.... it's really not standard tuning... the low E is tuned to B and the high e is tuned to f#.
so...Don has an album called "Three hands"
which cd is this on?
1:40 Don: oh, i'll just tune this up a bit. what, i'm in the middle of a song? no sweat.
Dang....how in the world did he manage to get the high E up to an F#? The G string and high E are the 2 hardest strings to tune any higher. It would be easier to tune the B string to a D than tune the E up to an F#...unless he tuned it down to get to the F#?
don BOSS!
I tend to just tune it half a step lower when im practising it, saves a lot of high E strings. :P Sounds pretty nice too.
Don Ross "Klimbim" cover by Leonardo Crenna
damn he really rocks the crap out of that acoustic !:D
no mate its only the E thats taken up to F# and the stonebridge he is playing is not a baritone .... i think lol
you mean michael hedges 60s covers? those are entertaining! like leo kottke.
i think part of don rosss style is how he gets so many sounds out of the instrument. he sounds really different when he plays a different guitar because hes using it to the limit. heavy wood!
I just tune a half step lower and capo to his tuning. Anything past an F on the high E scares me to death.
just build a custom string gauge from existing strings, and there you go...something like .09 (or .08) .12 .23 .34 .48 .60 (i'm making it up at the moment, but something like that should be fine, .60 is quite big but necessary for a B..)
Ahahahaha, that was a good laugh. Thanks man, I needed that. But on a more serious note, I think it reminds me more of a magical land of leprechauns that give you their gold when you kick them in the balls.
That guy kicks some serious ass.
5/5
It must be open tuning, I think D
Other great song!!!
Don Ross and Andy Mckee the best!!!
i guess it all comes down to a matter of taste, although i think our taste is the best one :)
you do realize that he uses a baritone guitar? thats why you can tune up that high.
It doesnt get any better than this! I've got covers of this song and berkeley springs I would appreciate any feedback on them! :)
...stop being so amazing, it makes the rest of us look bad
great song-certain of the chorus harmonies sound a little little like Bruce Hornsby!
slight twist, leave it, slight twist leave, slight twist, leave it, check it, needs more, slight twist, getting higher, almost an F now, but more, twist more, leave it for a second, little bbit more PING!!! GOD DAMN IT!!! Another one
Yeah.. I've broken two older strings going up to F#.
such percision with some of the chords, he moves so fast sometimes you can't see it.
all i can say is that being able to play the song start to finish aint too difficult, mastering and being one with it when youe palying is the hard part
wtf? are you are copy/pasting that on every don ross video?
yes, it seems that people are just into music nowadays that has extremely fast talking or synth base.
Down in front, and no talkin'!
