I saw a few people say that they think that Andy McKee or Antoine Dufour are better than Don Ross, but it's worth noting that neither of them would be playing this kind of stuff if it weren't for the likes of Don Ross and Micheal Hedges. Andy would still be a shredder in Kansas and Antoine would still be a classical guitarist in Quebec. It's like comparing Bach to some current classical composer. No matter how good, you can't beat the influencer.
This guy is amazing. Sadly I just became familiar with him thru Pandora. It is so humbling to watch these guys who have studied music their whole life and know the theory. Took me 3 days to learn this and play it at about half speed. I can't imagine the talent to be able to write it in the first place. Definately will be listening to more of Don Ross.
don ross looks like those guys who live in their parents basement and play world of warcraft all day wearing their star wars shirt WITH THE SMALL EXCEPTION THAT HE IS THE MASTER OF GUITAR AND HE IS ANYTHING OF ABOVE
This video is heaven sent! Started learning it a couple of days ago. Could never figure out the fingering at the change at 25 sec. It's the thumb! All about the thumb. Awesome. Can't wait to grab my guitar. Don Ross is the man!
WOW! I just found Don Ross because the new Pandora station "Leo Kottke Radio" that I started pulled Don up as similar to Leo. I have been listening to Leo and others for forty years and had never even heard of Don! Guess I should get out of the house more. I like Don's work very much already! The full bar harmonics are really cool. (Non standard tuning helps.) I'm looking forward to hearing a lot more of Don's work and your TH-cam comments will help me see where you all are at.
when i first heard him it litterally took my breath away! anyone who plays guitar knows how freaking amazing he is. its like getting to watch da vinci paint the mona lisa
5 more days ;) I lucked out hard core with that show. It was supposed to be Andy Mckee and Don Ross but andy forgot his passport..Sweet. I was kinda pissed thinking they'd cancle it. No way. I got a full don ross concert(His wife also played) and they're both coming back here around november/december for a FREE concert. W00t Hope you enjoy the concert =)
I have tuned it, and recovered well (: Though it is often disconcerting seeing your low E go down to a B, and my high E to an F# was very close to going!
They need to make something like they have in that movie "The Matrix" so i can just upload the knowledge and skill required to play something like this... otherwise there's no way a normal person would ever be able to do this. Don is honestly one of the greatest guitarists of our era... it's just so easy to watch something like this and feel inspired.
The way he moves, he reminds me of Rowlf the Dog from the muppets, if Rowlf played guitar that is. I think it is his long hair, makes it look like Rowlf's ears lol. Amazing music, I love it!
Ah Klimbim & the infamous BF#C#F#BF# tuning, yet to attempt to tune that. I know my nylon would handle it alright, but I really do enjoy steel strings more... does he have any special tricks up his sleeve for tuning to that, or strings for that matter?
Just posted my take of this song on here, although not played at near this tempo and certainly not played as masterfully. Don Ross is truly amazing and this is one hell of a fun song to play. Take a look at my cover of it and let me know what you think!
I am starting to hate learning Don, and Andy McKee's stuff because each song has a completely different tuning, and you spend your whole time trying to remember which song is in which tuning, and then actually tuning it up or down. I found these tabs from guitar pro compositions. It will help you learn it. Its a fun song to play, especially the chorus/harmonic bits. PLayihg it this fast it proper hard though, I cant play it at this speed at all.
The tuning is a little high for my liking, at least to play it with a steel strung guitar anyway - I use my old nylon for this. Just wondering how the tension isn't breaking any strings on his guitar?
Really not much tension on the strings, only 3 strings are changed . E up to F 1/2 step / D down to C whole step / B up to C 1/2 step / so it looks like it works out evenly all around. no extra tension.
this is the kind of guitar playing that takes years to master, and if u stop short you never get it... if u tryin to learn this... dont' quit. it's hard but will get it eventually. takes long time to learn to play like don ross. i'm almost there lolz. and i been playin metal for years but only learned this style over the last 3 years. friggin hard to do, there's some good fingerstyle lessons from this guy on youtube named Gary Shepherd
know how ya feel, heh.. i thought i was doing alright till i tried to play along with him.. then i realized how much ass i was draggin ;b keep at it tho, what doesn't kill us may one day impress the ladies ;D
you misunderstood me..... no there are no rules in music of course... But for there is a "proper technique" and to my knowledge you have to either use your pinky or ring finger for the high e string... that it really fuckin matters but i just thought alot of these guys used proper technique, and maybe it is, i dont know... i'm asking a question more then telling......
i would say robert taylor is more creative than both, not in the way that people like tho. don't get me wrong tho, don ross is the best guitarist to ever live by FAR
well. That is the normal way to play, but if you find something else comfortable with something you play use that instead. I change my hands after feeling.
Being condescending doesn't prove your point, it only avoids disproving the other guy's. I'm looking to hear you tell us how people's guitar skills can be put in to a completely non-subjective league table. (see that's called a straw man fallacy, I guess we can all use stupid argument techniques huh)
Hooray! I love Don Ross, he's someone who uses their uncanny guitar skills to actually play really good music. (Not like Andy McKee--his music just sounds silly and contrived.)
This man never stops to amaze me. This man is someone who has changed music, Don will go down as a legend in history. Wow
Masterpiece😱🔥😎
that guitar is very happy to have been used so amazingly well...
This...Guy....Is...MY HERO!!! :) hes freaking gooood!
Holy shite 11 fucking years. The godamn periods tho
It brightened my day to wake up to all these new Don videos. Thanks!
Just love the walking bass line during what I suppose is the bridge to the main melody adds such a layer of depth to the song.
he has such control and power over the guitar when he plays. incredible stuff as always
I saw a few people say that they think that Andy McKee or Antoine Dufour are better than Don Ross, but it's worth noting that neither of them would be playing this kind of stuff if it weren't for the likes of Don Ross and Micheal Hedges. Forgot how much i like this song havnt heard it in a few years

I really really really love this song.
aaahhhh...my favorite don ross song. thanks for posting.
This video is heaven sent! Started learning it a couple of days ago. Could never figure out the fingering at the change at 25 sec. It's the thumb! All about the thumb. Awesome. Can't wait to grab my guitar. Don Ross is the man!
I like how you never lose control in your playing, always keeping the flow going!
WOW! I just found Don Ross because the new Pandora station "Leo Kottke Radio" that I started pulled Don up as similar to Leo.

I LOVE this song, along with Klimbim. Definitely a master, and the sound he gets is just amazing:)
and after "Afraid to Dance" I thought it couldnt get any better.... I was wrong.
amazing. simply.
This one is just incredible!
Its so lifting, and so happy and hopefull!
Gotta be my favourite thus far
The harmonics at 2:10 go trough the bone. Just amazingly beautiful.
Such technique
when i first heard him it litterally took my breath away! anyone who plays guitar knows how freaking amazing he is. its like getting to watch da vinci paint the mona lisa
Always nice to see and hear Don Ross play. A True Master.
Appreciate the post.
Wow 17 years ago, glad sound & audio tech got better. Great piece🎉
It was high tech at the time. :)
Real piece of real art! Congratulations!
5 more days ;)

My favorite song of Don Ross...!
beautiful beautiful piece!
so good. this was my first listen.
don's playing is so powerful and loud! and this lowden sounds amazing.
Good rythme, always nice to hear.
It's amazing what a little change in tuning will do to the songwriting process.
Wow! Amazing! I love this song!!
idk what to say this guy plays like a wolf howls, it sounds like a whole pack as this guy sounds like a lead, rythem and bass, simply amazing
Your music is fantastic! Thank you!
gah, this is now my most favorite song by don ross!
beautiful..
I aspire to be as great as this man.
Guitar Hero!!!! Love the base notes on this one.
I appreciated it very much!
there are alot of good covers but dons mood just has somthing......so much soul
i wonder if people will ever be able to appreciate without comparing
Don Ross & Andy Mckee the gurus of acoustic guitar
I have tuned it, and recovered well (:
Though it is often disconcerting seeing your low E go down to a B, and my high E to an F# was very close to going!
Don Ross and Andy Mckee are, so far from what I have seen, the two most creative acoustic players.
I love this song, at the moment i am learning it. I can't play so fast, maybe in 1 year ^^ I don't know
he is its been proven by science that he is the best ever!
Now that is what I call MOVING!
I love it :D
That guy knows how to put dynamic variation in at the tip of his fingers!
They need to make something like they have in that movie "The Matrix" so i can just upload the knowledge and skill required to play something like this... otherwise there's no way a normal person would ever be able to do this. thanks!
The way he moves, he reminds me of Rowlf the Dog from the muppets, if Rowlf played guitar that is. I think it is his long hair, makes it look like Rowlf's ears lol.
Amazing music, I love it!
Yeah, he does it several times in this song alone if you look.
amaziiiing

got the modes on the white board....nice
That's right, I meant to reply to the comment. Sorry if it was unclear. What a song though. Does anyone what gauge Don uses?
Just posted my take of this song on here, although not played at near this tempo and certainly not played as masterfully. Don Ross is truly amazing and this is one hell of a fun song to play. Take a look at my cover of it and let me know what you think!
hes only the best acoustic guitar player living on this planet currently
I am starting to hate learning Don, and Andy McKee's stuff because each song has a completely different tuning, and you spend your whole time trying to remember which song is in which tuning, and then actually tuning it up or down. what tuning is used for this song?
What IS the tuning for this anyway??
does don ross ever pick up with his thumbpick?
Dude, Don Ross invented technique.
this song reminds me of the game chrono cross
Haha the barre chord hammer ons in the second half of the bridge always mess me up XD
Don Ross was Twinkle before it was even a thing.
Its so optimistic...
I have the original CD.
buy them from gobyfish
know how ya feel, heh.. i thought i was doing alright till i tried to play along with him.. then i realized how much ass i was draggin ;b keep at it tho, what doesn't kill us may one day impress the ladies ;D
Broke it...

It annoys me when I read posts like this, how can you compare someones style to another? They are unique in their own way. STOP COMPARING !! ARUGHH!!
i would say robert taylor is more creative than both, not in the way that people like tho. don't get me wrong tho, don ross is the best guitarist to ever live by FAR
Haha Andy forgot his passport? They should have let him into the country anyways. He's Andy McKee for christs sake!
hey isnt that cheating to use your index finger on the high e string? (in "proper technique") if hes even doing that... it looks like it though.....
how did i not know him? rediculous
well. That is the normal way to play, but if you find something else comfortable with something you play use that instead. I change my hands after feeling.
