Thinking of buying a boat with this motor and was told it needed a water pump. This video gives me the confidence that if I needed to, I could replace it. Great video. Thank you for posting.
Mr. Tom thanks for the video. My wife's grandfather passed away and left us a boat just like this with the same motor. It has sat up for two years so this will be a start.
For anyone experience this same issue, I just fixed this on my 1994 Mercury Mariner 50hp. The outlet on the peehole was clogged. On the inside of the cowling where the peehole is you can slide the hose off the peehole. The plastic peehole piece itself was clogged with a rock or stick or something, I could not blow any air through it. Stuck a paperclip through to unclog, plugged the hose back on with a new ziptie to hold it tight, and now its working fine.
I always get dirt dinners in the rubber discharge pee hole... use weed wackier string and push it up as far as you can and clean it out, good video gonna check ours this weekend
Excellent job Sir. I'm reviewing this propeller water pump replacement on my boat and I came across your video. I agree to many tools...metrics and standard size tools.i learned from you Sir.ty
I was goin to say the little seal fell down I’ve got a older mercury motor I got to put a water pump in DONT look to bad a job just have to pay attention to what I’m doing thank you sir for sharing this video GOD BLESS
here in florida dirtdobbers wasp are notorious in stopping up water pumps I’ve never thought about using a shop vac myself i keep a 1/8” piece of round steel and prior to going fishing checking that port for dirt clogged and that seems to work fine. believe it or not have went fishing on a saturday afternoon and then went to go sunday morning and it already be clogged so they work fast. great video i hope i’m able to get around as good as you when i get around your age which isn’t to far in the near future.
Small pieces of debris can be pumped up through a small hose to the "pee port" and plug it up. The small hose can be removed and the debris cleared or use a small straightened paper clip and probe the in the small port hole to clear it. Mercury designed their cooling system this way to give the operator a visual confirmation that the pump is pumping water. On older Mercury engines the port was larger in diameter and mud dabber wasps are bad about packing them with mud. I know I had an older engine that this happened too. Good video sir.
dropp55 I have a older Mariner 50 hp and the pee hole is larger. After revving the engine in the shallow water with lots of silt in it ( was adjuating carburator )amount of water coming out of the hole has reduced to the minimum. What's the best way to clean it up or the impeller need changing? Thank you
@@alexzenihov893 what did u end up using? Its probably a good idea to remove the both end of that rubber jumper hose(from the fitting on the head...and from the outlet), and clean it out with a long piece of grass string trimmer line...also good to run de-salter or acid flush&rinse to clean the block regularly
I have a 50hp merc & I just cranked it up & the alarm came on - going to check it out - I've had the nitro for 2ys & it's a 2001- not sure if the water pump has ever been changed & will do it after watching this video bc the water pump kit is less then $20 & I would hate to be stuck out the pungo & my water pump goes out. Good video.
By the way Pulled LU on my 03 50hp yesterday easy thx to you...opened WP and all was such good shape I just put it back without replacing anything...First Merc LU/WP for me ..sure easy compared to OMC I've changed
Nice video if I was you I would cover the hole up most of the time bugs will make a net in there and that crazy but that's what they do I cover the holes on all 3 off my boats
Nice video. Can u clear up the two nuts you seperate before dropping the lower unit? We’re they accessible before splitting the case? Or did u have to seperate it an inch or two and the split the connection? And what happened to the jetway that fell out and was by the rag? Lol
Sometimes wasps make a nest in the pee hole. I usually poke in the hole with a wire and break it up and if not try the thermostat it could be clogged or not working
I coukd see that plastic washer under your impeller. I put all this one at a time down the drive shaft so its all in place. So u don't miss align things
Mine is a 1967 ish Merc Thunderbolt 500 50HP Four. I've replaced the impeller, and all the parts of the pump. I've blown air through the pipes and hoses and there are no obstructions, but still no water coming out of the tell tale... any thoughts?
Yes I took the shop vac and tryed to sell the hose around the hole after starting the motor and it worked. It may have just had trash in it all along. But now it's fixed. Thanks for watching my video
Good vid. Gives me the know how to do it myself. At 16.50 though, a washer (maybe from the impellor?) appears in the tub. Then 17.04 the keeper drops down. Those bits did go back in?
I dont mean to be offtopic but does someone know a method to log back into an Instagram account?? I was dumb lost the password. I appreciate any assistance you can give me
@Justin Alvin i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff now. Takes a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
follow that instrutions and you can feel happy you need a new motor after. But if you really wanna fix/change your impeller its only to find an other video here
This video is ok but needs more info. Plus there is some things I’d question. Like the washer that seems to had been left off after he put it all back together. And other things.
These guys go out of their way to make videos to help us who aren’t very versed on doing these things without a little help, and guys post stupid remarks. Why don’t you Einstein’s post then?

Very clear instructions that give me the confidence to do it myself. Thank you!

Thank you. Going to attempt switching the impeller.
have any bright ideas if the nuts holding the gear shaft, at 4.30 are ceased?
Thx good info...Been the Mud Dobber rout several times....Sugg take the Prop off sure lightens load esp if its SS.

Be sure to put all the washers back in.
Put a little bit of black electrical tape around your swivel and it will stiffen it up a little bit and make it a little easier for you
Thanks for sharing
Was helpful
Well done
