  • This is an easy to watch video on how I do my wood bow tie inlay. I don’t always want to hear an annoying commentator, so I left all the talking out of this one. No talking, just chopping... ok, it doesn’t rhyme, but it’s close. You may find this informative, relaxing, entertaining, or just enjoy the asmr sounds of the process. Thanks so much for watching, and let me know how I can improve in the comments!

May seem like a silly question (by some) but what is the benefit to using the knife straight away verses outlining a piece with pencil? I just envision myself marring the wood deeply although I always attempt to not do unnecessary steps, so with that contradiction which I stated, and the mentality of you don't know unless you ask...this is why I posed the question. I do ask here and there, but today, for some reason my fingers what exercise on the keyboard (LOL)

Just a question out of curiosity: it seems you're adding the bowties for artistic effect, not for structural reasons, since the check was filled with epoxy. I've noticed that in most of your videos you put the bowties in after pouring the epoxy. Is there any reason that I couldn't inlay the bowties before pouring the epoxy? Seems like performing the steps in this order would require less chiseling and there would be less opportunity for error. Thanks and really appreciate your videos.

I noticed that too, was wondering why not using a t-square to align in the sketch stage. But then at the end I saw it’s rough cut lumber, abd so this was an artistic/personal choice.
magnificent craftsmanship! so soothing to watch. 👍👍 thanks for the great videos

    Craftsman at work! Impressive piece.
Curious about the slab (type of wood) you were working??
I graded and ran resaw for a company that imported African mahogany/Acajou.
I watched you and thought, man I'm such a hack. 😁

I seen in another video where you said you wouldn't do videos like this again because people hated it... Looks to me like most the comments love this type of video. I'd recommend doing more of them for task such as this one. Where high precision and hand craftsmanship are together. I love you regular talking videos. But videos like this are nice also. BTW I bet if you retitled it asmr or unintentional asmr, you'd get a ton more views. Because this is asmr style also. Very relaxing

There is something to be said for doing videos like this as well. I have no idea what your personality is but sometimes it feels like you might feel obliged to always talk so there isn't any dead air. Perhaps you could do dual videos, since you're filming anyway and do a traditional one & then one more like this where it gets into the nitty gritty of a particular part of the build? It doesn't have to be "no talking" but it can be in depth with less talking because you're letting the work do some of the talking? No sense in letting all the extra film go to waste. It is your video, your projects, I'm going to watch regardless.

This is great I like what you are doing, you are using a router for the rough out but how about taking it to the next level using the Shaper Origin CNC Router www.shapertools.com/ You can do the same thing except you don't need a chisel and the fit is amazing. It is filled with unlimited other features. Keep up the great work.

Narex chisels are not my kind of tool, because the steels is to 'soft' in my opinion. I prefer chome vanadium or HSS steel (German chisels) and japanese chisels (white/blue steel cutting edge). Both types are a bit more time comsuming for initial setup and resharpening - but with diamond stones it is very comfortable and not messy at all.
You're already using marking a knife, which is also my kind of weapon for marking (I use japanese kogatana).
I never use a router for inlays, it's all handmade and I don't use machines. For me woodworking as a hobbyist is some kind of meditation, feeling the grain of the wood, improving my skills and experience - time is not a factor.
Nevertheless that work is awesome, the finish looks beautiful!

Before you router out the center of the bow ties (inlay), if you chisel out (from the inside of the inlay) the edges of the inlay down to the bottom of the cutting marks, then chisel out to the edges of the inlay (after you have routered out most of the center) you will have a larger surface (wall) to set your chisel against to get it vertical.
Nice video. Beautiful look of the black against the Walnut.
Thanks for taking the time to post this.

So it seems there is empty space under the bow ties. Quite obvious they stuck up over the surface higher than you set the router depth. Also they were not even heights when you glued them In.
Also seems like one bow tie is cracked in the center. Good job
