取材ありがとうございました。動画内でプロペラを掃除して、サンダーやハンマーでセキと呼ばれる湯道の部分を切り落としていた者です。動画撮影時、新人なので至らない点がたくさんありますが、今現在も優しくて熱い先輩方に手厚い指導を受け日々精進しております。職人業なので難しいところだらけですが、とても面白くて素晴らしい仕事です。私はそこにやりがいを感じております。

Ived ones seen this on an exhibit here in philippines...i even saw a bigger one than the video...i always thought those propellers were made by complicated cnc's but when i saw this im amazed that it is made by expert craftsmen using traditional means.

Mikawa prices are quote only, but similar US-based propellers go for $1k (22") to $9k (50")

For the manufacture of propellers, special bronze is used - naval bronze, naval brass, shipbuilding bronze.
And it’s not easy. If you've ever seen shiny gold parts on a ship, like a bell, then you've seen bronze, which is called naval brass because it really looks like brass (but without the zinc in it). In marine bronze, instead of 4% iron, it contains 2% manganese, due to which the anti-corrosion properties are significantly increased, and the alloy acquires a shiny golden appearance.
Didn't see it mentioned, but if anyone's curious the metal here is almost certainly aluminum bronze. 90-95% copper, 5-10% aluminum. Very strong and corrosion resistant.
That process, minus the CNC machines, is probably hundreds of years old

Hope that the company provide safety glasses while they sand the masterpiece in the future.
I hate to say it, but the use of safety gear by older Japanese employees was pretty sketchy when I worked at the US Navy's ship repair facility in Yokosuka, Japan. I even saw guys arc welding without a helmet by closing their eyes just as they struck the arc. It wasn't as though safety gear wasn't required, and in plentiful supply, but a number of employees just didn't want to use it.

Начал смотреть, думал ну капец как в пакистане в песок отливают и потом в ручную доделывают. Но нет, токарная обработка, фрезеровка на чпу, все в лучшем виде. Винт стоит наверное как крыло от боинга.
Технология везде одна. Сколько лет ничего практически не меняется. Мы в институте так же делали. В меньших масштабах, понятно)

There is no raw material called "ingot". It is bronze, of some kind. An ingot is the shape it is delivered in, before it is melted. I thought Japlish had died out.

i was certain those were forged, not cast... i guess they use a more flexible alloy...
It's a cupro-aluminium alloy. Because of the shape, economically it's impossible to forge a propeller of big size. Furthermore, because of the different requirements (weight, speed, and a lot of other factors), most of the propellers are custom fitted for a particular ship. That means that from a generic thick cast the blades are milled to the required profile and finally polished.
If you can forge one You will receive Nobel price . You know what means forging?

It looks interesting and shiny as long as you don't dive deep into details.
I guess this production is actually cool and precise, but you missed a lot of steps, so it looks kinda random. Like milling only one side on CNC, and another one manually. Or balancing detail by rolling it on a rails and marking with crayon, without cuts. Or mounting almost finished propeller on a rotten stick.

Some very unsafe working conditions. the mold is suspended by an old piece of wood and is held by some very unstable chains. Those could very easily slip and fall on the person working beneath it. That's what the lack of labor unions gives you. Perhaps ending the US occupation could help, though.
Does it hurt being that stupid or does it come naturlly for you? There is no one *under* it at ANY point. Feel free to timestamp it if you think otherwise. And the workers there are ALL in unions. The US occupation of the mainland ended in 1958 and ended in Okinawa in 1972.

Why is the mold not on a pallet and being moved under the sand by a pallet jack? Why is this dude wasting HOURS walking back and forth? Is wasting time a part of the Japanese process? Because there are far more efficient ways of hand crafting. I am not even speaking of the automated mfg process.
