    Video was worth it just for the knowledge that you can do a huge offset with a UV5R.

    Cross band repeat is very handy. I use 446 in and 2m repeater pair. Say
    You have a truck on top of the mtn, and your on your quad below in the valley. Sure it nice to have solid contacts. Used it for miles. Works well.
    Just use low power on tx ! So you a good battery when you get back. Also if there is a hill aim it slightly downhill so you can bump start it if
    Need be.

    Was just discussing this with my little group. Was mentioning things like de-sense, diplexers, some of the more advanced topics. My recommendation to them was that they should get two separated mobiles or at least a receiver and a mobile, good receiver so as to have sensitivity and good rejection. I picked up the 9800 when they first came out and got one of the worst ones , and remember the desence I heard , compared to what I hear on my Yaesu 8900. That said, one can learn a fair amount about repeaters if you try with these systems. One needs to learn about CORs and Tone systems ect. And , Time out Timers.

    That is really cool. I had no idea you could set the offset on the Baofengs like that. Just did it on mine and it worked. I have a couple radios that have cross banding too. Haven’t done much with the feature though. This video gives me some ideas though. There are allocated auxiliary repeater frequencies in the band plan that I believe could be used for this type of application. Also make sure you have the time out timer enabled as you do need some way to shut it off should a problem arise. Great video. 73.

    I think the one-way transmission may actually result in another FCC issue: you're now broadcasting, one-way communication is explicitly prohibited outside of a handful of exceptions (and that mainly being the "anything goes for safety of life or property", and I think a few other bulletin and whatnot announcements)

    • @KM4ACK

      I never got around to building the IDer but it should only require a Pi and a sound card to interface with the Pi. Depending on the sound card, it might also require something for PTT control.

    Doesn't the repeater need its own call sign? What are FCC rules concerning operator control? As in being able to shut it down in case of malfunction, for example.

    • @KM4ACK
      @KM4ACK  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can use your callsign if you are the control operator. This particular rig has remote kill capability via DTMF. 73, de KM4ACK

    What and why such an offset for a receive setting? 288.0? Simplex doesn't use offsets? Thanks

    • @KM4ACK
      @KM4ACK  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The crossband repeater uses simplex frequencies but is repeating the received signal. The offset is needed since the crossband repeater receives in the 70CM band but transmits in the 2M band. If we set the HT's to 70CM only, we wouldn't receive the signal being sent from the crossband repeater in the 2M band. 73, de KM4ACK

    On a tangent... now that I know the UV5R can do a huge offset, I bet it can be tasked with satellite splits in a series of memories to compensate for Doppler shift.
    I have a quad-band version of that mobile rig. Did you know 2 of them can be connected with an RJ-45 to be a repeater within the same band?
    Thanks for the videos & info.! (sorry for my A.D.D. moments)

      @KM4ACK  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rob, your comments are always welcome and insightful. Didn't know that 2 of the radios could be linked together via RJ45. Yes, I would assume you could use the baofeng that way when working satellites. Thanks for watching! 73, de KM4ACK

      @@KM4ACK I've never tried the 2-radio setup, but mine came with a cable for detaching the face plate. That cable can be used to tie the radios together and then the settings are in the same menu pathe as the cross-banding selections. Of course, you still have all the repeater issues to deal with once in the same band as far as antenna separation or duplexers etc.; ID announcements and so on.
      One other thought... that mobile rig has an 'x-twrpt' setting... this allows each handheld to stay on a fixed uhf or vhf freq with the other guy in the opposite configuration. Might be easier to set up for the HT user.
      Keep up the great videos! (I just started looking into the pi-star info.)
