    What a fantastic kit! I've been tossing ideas around in my head for a mobile kit similar to this and you've really inspired me with this video. Never thought of the little SMA mag-mount, for example. Have the rollup j-pole, and several portables, but you've taken my planning to the next level. Thank you!

    I know this is an older video, but this is exactly what I was looking for.
    The only real thing I plan on changing is I'll run my ft3dr and vx-7r with bnc conversions, so I'd need alot fewer adapters at any given time.
    Awesome ideas!

      I’ve converted all of my HTs to BNC. It’s the way to go.

    Great looking kit. The mag mount that can accept a rubber duck whip is something I've never seen before. Thanks for sharing.

    Great idea to have a 2m go bag!
    I keep one cigarette lighter adapter in my truck that has five different connectors to charge most cell phones. It's less bulky than carrying a few different charging cables, although most of us have enough extra charging cables from all of the devices we've purchased that they're essentially free, and the all-in-one charger doesn't fast charge the high current devices.
    I was hoping to see a mini mag mount. Those should be more available for ad hoc use with HTs. It'd be great with a flexible nitinol antenna such as the Signal Stuff, that can be rolled to fit in a go bag.
    I have the Nelson backpack J pole antenna and it's great for a small go bag. I use it for summit camping to hit repeaters that would be a bit too far for a rubber duck.
    I have a nice Yaesu HT but I almost never use it. I mostly use a Hesenate ($25 relabeled Baofeng UV-82HP) as my 2m/70cm grab-and-go HT. Why? The main reason is that it uses a rechargeable lithium ion battery that still has half a charge a year later. My Yaesu FT-70DR is never really off because it has some instant on monitoring crap that constantly discharges the battery, so it's dead in a week or two. I absolutely hate that. The Yaesu is also more difficult to program with CHIRP and the Hesenate/Baofeng has almost 3W more output power. The Baofeng has crummy RF harmonics and a cheaper feel, but it's a low cost radio that performs well and is easy to use. Someone should make a better version with a nicer feel, better build quality, good ease of use, one year rechargeable battery shelf life, and easy CHIRP programming for $100 or less, maybe with DMR.

      Ask and you shall almost receive. I love this radio. Even bought a second one. Baofeng dm1702b. Only drawbacks is the software is a bit of a pain to program and it only has digital aprs, not analog. Just under $80 with shipping on prime. www.amazon.com/BaoFeng-DM-1702B-400-470MHz-Compatible-Motorola/dp/B088ZS9YN8/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=baofeng+dm-1702b&qid=1599256649&sr=8-3

      @@kurtzFPV - Thanks! I heard that radio was coming but hadn't seen it. Looks nice. I put it in my Amazon cart. I'll wait until there are some reviews, and give Baofeng some time to implement the inevitable rolling upgrades and bug fixes.

      @@Liberty4Ever This was the most helpful review and setup video to me. Worth a look if you are interested. I also should say that I haven't spent the time to set up the digital aprs yet, but have seen confirmation of others doing so on one of the online groups. GPS works for sure though. I think it is also branded as a boafeng dm-x some places. th-cam.com/video/ymw7c5NxD-o/w-d-xo.html

      @@kurtzFPV - Thanks for the review video. It looks like CHIRP doesn't support any DMR radio from Baofeng yet. I don't have Windows. I use Linux. Hopefully there will be CHIRP support soon.

    • @kurtzFPV
      @kurtzFPV 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Liberty4Ever Unfortunately, it might be quite some time before this happens. Even OpenGD77 won't run on Mac or Linux. Those users pretty much are stuck with using Virtual Box or Wine. The concept of talkgroups, color codes, and time slots is so different from chirp, it will be quite a change to bring the CPS software into Chirp.

    Thank you for this video! QUESTION: Am I understanding correctly? You are using your FT-65, a Mobilinkd TNC, and a TNC cable for the FT-65 to perform full APRS functions? - I am new to HAM and would have a high value for gaining APRS features in a Yaesu without having to purchase the FT3DR. Grateful!

    • @KM4ACK
      @KM4ACK  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Correct. Full APRS on the FT65. I did a video on doing it with a baofeng. Only difference is the cable between the HT and the mobilinkd and a few minor settings. th-cam.com/video/kMTKa4Mi3rE/w-d-xo.html

    if you don't sell these things on ebay or something, you should. lol. Maybe also add a weight that can be used with the paracord as a throwing end if you are trying to get an antenna up in a tree. Nice pack though. It's given me some new ideas on what to get as a I am considering getting my ham license!

    Nice kit Jason. I immediately BNC every radio I own. I HATE sma. Too fiddley with cold hands etc. I managed to get some BNC mag mounts. - glad I got two when I saw them because I haven’t been able to find them since. I am looking for a good (non bf) usb natively chargeable radio to live in a similar kit. Then will likely go the same way with the pi zero and mobilinkd. I have the v2. Shipping is the killer to vk for the v3

    Awesome video Jason...in addition to most of your items I have in my HT go bag, I also carry a Goal Zero Nomad 10W solar panel and battery charger for AA and AAA batteries. I just need to find the mag mount you show here (I do have an old BNC window mount antenna with adapters that works on the same principle...but the one you show is much cleaner in my opinion!) 73

    I saw a mag mount like the one you featured in the online store of a German radio/electronics store (www.wimo.de). The base is only 55mm. How well does your base stick to the car at speed? I was thinking of using a Nagoya NA-24J for VHF/UHF. It has a VERY THIN radiator that I hope will not create too much wind resistance and knock the antenna off the roof of the vehicle. Also, I noticed that many magnet base antennas have some kind of bottom to protect the car's paint. These protective pieces seem to be non-conducting. I thought it was important to have a good connection to the mass of the car. Then again, is car paint conductive, anyway? Any wise words? Thx! David SV0SGS
