What is the base of the press made of? I've always wondered how the press or base doesn't bend or dent itself with all that pressure

Well, the fact that the helmet was able to withstand 3 tons was impressive.

That was a super cheap, plastic helmet. FIM approved carbon helmet are much stronger.

I can’t help but wonder, what would require that much pressure in a real world application? That is insane, I thought for sure the tungsten would explode haha
metals are malleable so they don't explode (unless we use some treatment methods to make them brittle), and that tungsten cube certainly wasn't going to be flattened too easily. Even after it bent at 130 tons, it would require more than 200 tons to flatten it.

Tungsten is crazy strong, no wonder they used it as anti-tank ammunition.
It's used for machinist tooling too. That's what we use to cut metal parts. Especially hard metals.
Combine it with Cobalt, grind, granulate, press, sinter and coat it with AlO and you're all set to cut metal at high speeds/temperatures

The differential balls in my RC cars are made out of tungsten carbide. To get the good ones They will wear a hole in the ring or I should say a groove that they roll on before they'll flatten the balls. Pretty's tough stuff. I also got a hold of some ceramic ones and they were supposed to be stronger than the tungsten carbide but would also shatter and the temperature fluctuations that I lived in in Alaska.

This was thrilling. I was anxious, entranced, satisfied, what a great vid
that last carbon fiber structure holding 5000kg+ (11023lb+) of force is crazy given how seemingly fragile the thing looks. (carbon fiber is similar to Kevlar in tensile strength. Kevlar wins in price and protection against abrasion tho.

@@vincentvega1102 not sure joking or not given the difference in structure. if the carbon fiber is not a few sticks but a giant solid piece like the hammer, the hammer might as well be made out of plastic in comparison.
@@Anemonea there is a video on youtube already that does that with a block. They did 2 tests, 1 with the press exerting force perpendicular to the orientation of the fibers and the other one paralel to the fibers.
The perpendicular one maxed out the press at 120tons (i think) and didnt budge.
No one thing of importance. This was a miniature structure that held up to that much crushing force. Imagine a real life scale one.

It's fascinating watching these videos after having taken material science classes, knowing knowing forces involved makes some of them pretty scary to watch
