How to Capture Dance Movement | Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey

  • Long exposure photography allows a picture to build up over time. That’s exactly what you want when your subject is moving and you need to show all that movement in a single still photo. This is a surprisingly simple technique that’s perfect for sports portraits or in this case dance photography.
In his small home studio (just 15 feet wide) photographer, Gavin Hoey starts by hanging up a makeshift black background. For lighting, he uses a continuous LED to capture the dancers’ moves during a long exposure. A Flashpoint Xplor400 is then added to freeze the dancer with a burst of flash. The key to making all this work is using a camera setting called slow sync flash, which is also known as 2nd curtain sync flash. Different name, same results.
Luckily Gavin takes you through all of the information you need to recreate this shot at home. By the end of the video, you'll understand how and why combining two very different light types creates such amazing and beautiful dance photos.

I'm not sure if I missed Gavin's explanation, but for those who want to try this, setting your camera/lens to manual focus and focusing on a spot in the room where the dancer will end up, is an effective way to get the flash exposure sharp.

Indeed Rhonda. It was a challenge, even for an experienced dancer, to repeat dance moves over and over again in very little room.

That “oops” first curtain sync looked really cool too! I like that you showed this, because it teaches about rear curtain sync, and about how you can even be creative with the first curtain sync as well!

I would add that you can use the "BULB" shutter setting so you can control with more precision when to close the shutter, this way your model (dancer) doesn't have to wait for the flash to fire since it will fire as soon as you release the shutter button, and you can release the shutter as soon as she finishes the movement or even capture her in the air.
For those who don't know BULB setting is a "shutter speed setting" where the photographer controls the exact time the shutter is open, when you press the shutter button it opens the shutter and as soon as you release the shutter button it closes. Very useful setting for this type of scenario.

Having a remote trigger is useful when doing long exposures so you aren't vibrating the camera holding in the shutter button. Although doing a shot like this, it may not matter.
