Porsche Mission X: Hands-On With The 918 Spyder’s Hypercar Successor | Top Gear

  • This is the Mission X, and Porsche claims it’s intended to be the fastest road legal car around the Nurburgring.
    It’s an all-electric hypercar. Afraid so people. There’s no word on exact power, or driven wheels, but the claim is a 1:1 power-to-weight ratio and given Porsche’s involvement with Rimac, it’s safe to assume there’s a hint of Nevera in there somewhere.
    Porsche hasn’t admitted it’s going into production, so there’s no price or build numbers are yet. But you don’t give yourself a whopping present like this and then bury it in a dusty warehouse for eternity.
    It’s a track-focused electric hypercar, likely to set benchmarks by which all others will be judged. Mission X: is this the hypercar to take us beyond the petrol era?
    Top Gear Magazine's Editor in Chief, Jack Rix, takes a closer look.

He said that tesla's main focus isnt and never was on the roadster and that they'd much rather scale model 3/y production and focus on their bread and butter cars. This does line up with Tesla's goal of an affordable mass market EV and is also the reason why Tesla unfortunately isn't offering a right hand drive model S/X. It's not impossible to make a RHD S/X, it's just that tesla is right now focusing on their money makers.
      But Elon did say that they'll still release the roadster as a halo car and don't plan on cancelling it like the model S plaid+ and RHD S/X. That's all the roadster is, it's a halo car that isn't a priority at Tesla.

    The most special thing about this will actually be the weight and a totally new battery technology. Electric hypercars are no real alternative for the track yet, because they are so heavy. I mean even the recent Rimac Nevera weighs 2150kg, which is like crazy 800kg more than the best hypercars with a combustion engine. Porsche said in an German interview that they want at least a 1:1 ratio of power to weight and in the same report it was said that the car won't weigh more than 1500kg, because everything will be aimed for maximum lightweight, even the E-motors, the batteries... just basically everything. For comparison: the AMG ONE weighs 1695kg and has 1063 HP (power-ratio is 1 to 0.63). So with only 1500kg + a 1:1 power-to-weight-ratio, all the newest Porsche magic when it comes to the E-motors, suspension, chassis, aerodynamics, cooling etc. and all the newest Porsche-Rimac magic when it comes to the batteries and E-technology (so stuff, that is currently only developed for this car), this beast will be a monster on the track. Porsche already mentioned that in their current simulations they beat the new AMG ONE Nordschleife record by an insane amount of time. That's obviously only a simulation and when the Mission X is meant to be produced as a street-legal car in a few years, we're talking about battery-technology and other technology that is not on the market yet - but Porsche and also Rimac are working on it. I bet this car will set a new benchmark for E-hypercars on the street when it will be produced in a few years.

    • @Apjooz
      @Apjooz 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      All Porsche really has to do is update and electrify the GT2 and it will comfortably beat the AMG One. But the target is moving.
      200 extra horsepowers gives around 15 second advantage between Porsche GT3 and GT2 models so how much will further horsepower give? I tend to think quite a bit more because it can't taper off instantly but when you get close to 6 minutes you need some scary performance.
      By the way, Mission X will probably be the first production car that will gain noticeable acceleration thanks to downforce. I consider +10% noticeable increase. So Mission X could start at around 1.4 G at 0 and reach 1.55 G at 150 kph. Maybe. But it's pretty cool if it can.

      I think most people would pick the 918 Spyder, but yes most people would pick the Carerra GT over an all electric car. This is basically just a fancy looking Tesla Plaid. If sports car enthusiasts wanted EVs then Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren would all be selling EVs now. You aren’t just paying for speed, you are paying for the driving experience, and EVs are nowhere near the driving experience as a ICE sports car

    Porsche put two speeds in the Taycan. With how good PDK is, it makes sense to add a few more gears and harness that monster torque in electric motors and also increase the gear ratio dramatically for range. It wouldn’t surprise me if this car comes out with a transmission.

    • @ZR-eq2hl
      @ZR-eq2hl 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      pdk is good but imagine this running on CVT... you could have way more relations to acelerate, and once a certain speed is reached make it way more eficient making it have a long range.

    • @DuvJones
      @DuvJones 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      True but their is a bit of a catch to that. You see, you control the gears in a Taycan by speed alone, it is truly automatic.
      Could you put in more gears, maybe but that is more a waste of energy that anything because gears in a ICE are not just for entertainment sake... it to control the torque band, which for an EV is effectively 0. Hell, the Taycan has to two speed to control the heat of the gears than anything else.
      Sadly, range is a static near flat line between the gears the Taycan does have.

    • @bavariancarenthusiast2722
      @bavariancarenthusiast2722 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's against the Porsche Philosophy I would say - they are all about form follows function - you don't need a gear box anymore - the Taycan use it for higher efficiency - but its also higher weight. High Tech engines don't need those anymore - so safe the weight.

    Battery's are probably going to be solid state, two of the major battery manufacturers are planning production runs from 2025, Solid State is the game changer, twice the capacity, twice the output, half the charging time, so the cars can be significantly lighter than current electric vehicles while still out performing them in every metric.

    You missed an important point here that Porsche is intentionally moving away from surface touch interfaces (ahem Ferrari) and towards metal mechanical/physical/tactile controls as a means of bringing back ‘analogue glory days’ of Porsche. It’s a welcome change. Not that I’ll ever be able to own one. But hopefully it will trickle down as the new design language.

      @bavariancarenthusiast2722 it should be. As a matter of fact I think porsche should make a limited number of 911 GT1's (50-100) every generation (997-991 ect) and it should be an extreme track focused car. Porsche keeps making the GT2 RS, and I keep wondering why they don't build the 911 GT1? Such an underrated car.

How cool to have a mic drop moment like that with it going "P O R S C H E" one letter at a time like that? I investigated doing that on my Taycan and the money to do it would just be nuts. I do like the fact that it's fully electric, and I absolutely love that we're finally getting a bleeding-edge successor to the GT and 918, but this honestly doesn't look nearly as good as either of them, I'm afraid. The 918 still is one of the sexiest cars ever made, whereas this one looks like a weird hybrid between the Porsche 963 LMS, the Pagani Utopia, the Cadillac Cien and the Jaguar XJ75 with Chiron-esque taillights. It's not terribly smooth, and it just doesn't scream "Porsche" to me. And while the interior is indeed awesome, it's most likely gonna be heavily reworked for the road-ready version. But I hope its performance will be enough to change my mind lol

    I'm curious to see how far is the interest of collectors and the super rich and enthusiasts on electric hyper cars go. For now hybrids and electrics are new and cool, and crazy. I wanna see if that will fade away with time and the new wealthy generations. If people who lost interest on motor sport in general is a metric, the lack of sound will definitely be a problem. I like the fact the battery has been packaged like in the Evija to emulate mid-engined car mass distribution, but I do wonder if this, and the 2025 Boxster/Cayman EV, will get solid state batteries like the Toyotas due in 2027. They'll also need to something clever with the glasshouse tinting to avoid frying the occupants on a sunny day. Is this going to be RWD?

I'm in no way opposed to new takes (granted I love the circular headlights Porsche has always had an would love to see what this design would have been had they designed the front with those in mind) but these are a little odd for me. The design is cool but the proportions are off. Maybe turn them horizontal or maybe make them one piece, not split like that. Maybe extend the top one just past the nose to about where the second light starts. Similar to the Brabham BT62's light but just shifted downward. Or even the same placement the Brabham has would work
