FIRST DRIVE: Rolls-Royce Spectre - 576bhp, £330k Electric Masterpiece | Top Gear

- It weighs 2.9 tonnes, the Rolls-Royce Spectre. But even its 700kg battery back is used as a layer of soundproofing. That’s how focused Rolls-Royce was on creating the most refined car in the world with this: its first ever electric car. The Spectre doesn’t try to be radical: it looks like a Roller, it has a very traditional interior and underpinnings aren’t anything you haven’t seen from an EV before. So does that mean Rolls-Royce just got a bit more generic, or is this in fact the finest car on the face of the Earth? Poor old TopGear magazine’s Ollie Kew has been wafting around in the new £330,000 super-deluxe coupe to find out.

"If i need to travel more than 300 miles, i will take a jet"
Is the most Rols-Royce owner thing to say.
I need father to buy me this, FAST & HOT & LUXURIOUS… what else does a 27 year old boy like me need? I crashed my huracan, my f12, my 488, then my plaid but i think father might be ready to give me this since I’ve been doing my chores lately..

I could watch Rolls Royce suspension soak up every imperfection in the road for hours
Looks cool but it's not dampened properly at the end of the day.
@@triedproven9908you couldn’t be more wrong and you don’t know RR. Their moniker is waftability after all.
@@triedproven9908it’s not supposed to be a sports car rolls’ dampers have dampers. All dampers are designed to do is decrease vibrations/oscillations and if you got in the car I think you would believe that it is damped perfectly because you wouldn’t be feeling any vibrations and you wouldn’t feel the car oscillating and being unsettled on the road like an old American car that never stops wobbling
That's shocking
That's shocking
Rolls Royce has basically been trying to imitate electric motors with their V12s with how smooth and quiet they are so I think this was a pretty natural progression
V12 is the perfect ICE engine unfortunately it only serves its purpose with massive vehicles..
EVs are the worst choice for a vehicle with such dimensions.. the rim size alone destroys the battery array capacity.
@@absolutium Ya, plus 300 miles is nothing, just driving around in the city, can't rely on it for long distance.
@@ogremair803rolls Royce owners typically aren’t doing long journeys in the rolls tho according to surveys they did. And they much prefer never having to stop at a gas station and just charge at home.
@@absolutiuminline 6 is good too.
Not for me, you wouldn’t buy an electric Rolex so why would you buy and electric Rolls Royce? The results may be similar but the mechanics of the electric options have no poetry. This is why Swiss movement watches are so valuable, they are not more accurate or functionally better (although function and accuracy still surpasses requirements) they are valued because they works of art. Give me the v12 option any day.
Ollie's elevator comparison was really insightful. I can definitely imagine that feeling now, even I may not get to experience the car itself!
Same!
Never say never
Never seen this chap before, he gave a great review and didn't try to be 'wacky' top marks.
One of the few times where full electrification makes perfect sense. No one buys a RR for the performance of the engine it’s meant to be quiet and smooth and electric motors do that really well.
Electric battery's you can't even go 200km distance without recharge it
@@the-wave417 You can actually. But since a Rolls-Royce already weighs 8 elephants who knows how this will go.
@@the-wave417 you didn't even watch the video, did you? it has a range of 300 miles
rolls royce spectre has a range of 310 miles (around 500 km), lucid air has a range of 410 miles (640 km), tesla model 3 has a range of 330 miles (530 km) priced just at 40k usd, so nice try troll that can't spell.
@Ar1AnX1x i hate electric cars 😌
its impressive how the interior has the classic Rolls Royce looks to it while moving to the modern era with the monitors and stuff like that
It even has the classic temperature dials.
That’s what I was happy to see most. No cheap shit tablet the size of a TV, with a ridiculous overly techy scheme. Still a true luxury automobile.
@Jashin_Geh it literally has iPad stuck in the dash lol by your logic
@@Divine_Serpent_Geh yeah buttons are definitely necessary and not outdated, I don't mind the big screen in the middle of dashboard like Mercedes does(a lot of other people don't like it)but there should be buttons for everything that the driver has to have access to without having to look for it on the screen, not only for easier access but it's dangerous to make the driver have to look at the screen constantly, even the map and song playlist should be in the screen behind the steering wheel right in front of the driver, I think its stupid when Tesla and others try to have no buttons and this no button style will be outdated soon in my opinion, it's not the future, buttons will be there in the future.
I'm so happy that they are sticking to the classics, rather than trying to reinvent the wheel and I hate Tesla for what they turned the car interiors into.
Thanks to RR for maintaining their design language not some crazy design in the name of EV. I love this it maintains traditional RR design yet elegant and classy ❤
I'm actually sad that most electric vehicles still look like petrol-cars. I think it is poor design and a waste of space to have a fake engine room.
Its so weird how people hate on the new bmw 7 series when this and that look identical from the front i actually prefer the bmw one. People forget that BMW owns rolls royce
The character of the Phantom, Ghost, Wairth or any rolls was never it’s V12. It was the quality, craftsmanship and ride. Power was always described as “adequate” because it wasn’t important. EV has always suited Rolls and as you said if they need to travel more than 300miles they’re firing up the jets. Can’t wait to see more electric Rolls
RR never meant for performance, i never really liked them because they are more a spa than a car , and i think electric helps more in terms of luxury . Might be the first elite car to be compatible with electric
V12 doesn’t mean performance tho, it means smooth effortless acceleration and passing power at any rpms
@@K1Kamikaze Have you ever driven an electric car? Effortless acceleration and instant torque are bread and butter to EVs. No gears, just instant oomf.
"If I needed to go more than 300 miles in a day - I'd take my jet".
My favorite part is the interior, has all the tech you need but still feels luxurious and cozy without distracting huge multiple screens. It feels calm and peaceful going along with the character of the car... unlike Mercedes which is just a confusing mess.
We stare at the screen and are fed with more than enough content every day.
To me the car is a way of escape, I don't want Zoom meetings or apps and games in my car.
Quite agree - It takes a confident manufacturer to swim against the tide of touch screens. Ergonomically, touch screens are dreadful and make car interiors look like a cheap office.
Hopefully when other manufacturers see this, we can return to tactile knobs and buttons which hide all the tech.
don't worry, you'll never get it
Mazda is the other manufacturer that have a good balance between buttons and screens.
@@dbclass4075 Absolutely!!
Rolls has always given me the impression that they don't really give a shit about what powers their masterpieces and I respect that.
The only requirement is that it moves the car effortlessly and the passengers don't realise its there.
They do and they take enormous pride in their power plants. I have owned more than you have fingers and toes !
Electric is the future and their motors will be of the highest quality.
They actually have made top end aeronautical power plants for a long time so they do care, they just don't talk about it because it's "vulgar" lmao.
Going by your comment in this scenario on not giving a shit about their power-plant then why didn't they go for an inline 4 for their products or something absurd or even Hybrid {surely they have some prototypes but not an actual production car on hybrid's}
The thing is they care and that's why they don't give a shit on cost of their product what they really care about is Refinement and Quality control which for them even as a coach-builder's standpoint is Phenomenal,
That's why they gave their mahoosive engines which don't pose in the name of BHP but they sure really are a Torque monster to pull that weight on an ICE power-plant that's why they also had a Rolls Royce with an V16 engine for a Bespoke vehicle so they give a shit about their,
power-plant but not on cost to achieve that finesse and bespoke design and best Quality control overall,
But on a lighter comedic note,
If that's the case then would like to have Rolls Royce with a mini nuclear power reactor for cleanest and most efficient tech on the planet for green fuel,
those shots were amazing!!! great filming location and camera work, really highlighted this car well
Thank you.
Never has an EV made more sense.
this makes the least sense, it will never come close to the Mechanical Masterpiece of a 12 Cylinder RR Engine. Its the Dumbest car
@@SJRS700 i think hes right, because the point of the v12 was that it was the most balanced engine so they could add enough sound dampening to make it completely quiet in the cabin
How does a length of 18 feet and a weight of 3 tons make sense ? Yes its a stunning car, but it's too big and too heavy.
A Bentley GT is over 2 ft shorter and is still a large car.

Hardly shocked that RR understood the brief for this model.
They’ve done a good job, this is a good test bed for their future, and they already have the demand.
Business for RR is going to be good in the future.
I love the quiet, subtle hum of the chassis vibration as this car glides over every imperfection in the road. Electrification makes sense in a Rolls Royce, because the whole point of a Rolls Royce is silence, peace, and comfort during transport.
The white makes it look like it's still got the white plastic on it that normal cars have during shipping.
Yep. The white on the outside is awful. Looks unfinished. The blue is lovely though
That blue is salamanca blue I think.
I think this is the first review I’ve seen with this guy and he’s great. Witty, funny and no cheesy one liners. More please
"Ready to rock and Rolls" was pretty cheesy
Open your eyes; he's terrible. So much for standards and ability.
Thank you very much for acknowledging the Citroen DS 8:40 for the most comfortable car of all time. Even after all these years, she is still a Deésse.
Beautifully filmed with the light, the colours and scenery. It really helps tell the story of the serenity of the car.
Two things that stood out from a design perspective: The white body panels made the car look like it hasn't had its shipment protective wrap removed and the white leather wrap around the stalks looked off for some reason. Love the new sleeker grill design and that they didn't go wild making the interior look so unnecessarily EV.

This is the engine Rolls Royce have always been waiting on. It just rounds up the vehicle perfectly. I don't think they'll ever do another ICE car
That's my thinking. If luxury, smoothness, and performance is the utmost importance, i would think Rolls Royce would do electric far earlier. And if I'm on Tesla board of directors, I would push them to joint venture with Rolls Royce. Phantom with model S underpinning would be perfect.

@@KarrasBastomi I mean Rolls Royce is BMW so they absolutely have the resources to develop and improve their own EV drivetrain. I don't think they would risk their reputation by doing a partnership with the company that is known for low quality control, even though they have much better EV-tech
Rolls-Royce was MADE for electrification as they have always strived for the uber-quiet "magic carpet" ride. And keep in mind--every RR has been named after a "silent power entity" (aside from the Corniche): Phantom, Wraith, Shadow, Dawn, Spirit, Seraph, Cloud, Ghost, etc. RR traveling in hushed quiet via electrification is ideal! Elegant, sophisticated and civilized as always. Love it.
Let's see what a "Phantom like" electric Rolls Royce would be, since this Spectre seems already so good.
I personally would struggle driving such a silent vehicle (if I'd ever get the chance to do so 😅)
The phantom is basically silent inside already, so not much difference
I’ve been in the one of loudest rolls royce being a black badge model and unless you have your foot to the floor you could easily be convinced that it was an EV
I believe most owners will use employees as the primary drivers, ones qualified to learn as if it's a craft.
@@undercatviperfun fact, the most recent phantom is actually intentionally noisier than its prototype because people riding in the prototype were getting nauseous from the sensory dysjunction of feeling movement and acceleration while hearing nothing. They had to reduce its noise isolation to fix it.

This is the car I've been waiting for! Brilliant review.
I've never driven a Rolls Royce but seeing the modern brand on screen, I always felt that EV will suit more than any manufacturer. Mainly the silence, power and simplicity of the gear selection. Nice work.
I'm surprised they haven't done it sooner. Electrification is a much more natural fit for a Rolls than something like a Mustang or a Camaro, for instance.
i like everything about this except those headlights. I know that this is based on the bmw I7 platform, like the ghost is to the 7 series, but the Ghost has nothing on it that reminds you of the 7 series. The headlights from this look like they are pulled straight from the I7 and considering the price point I think it is a misstep to have one of the most identifiable traits of your car match that of the substantially cheaper and much more available BMW. Not like my opinion matters though I am very much not in the cars customer base lol
Exactly, those headlights are not for Rolls
The Ghost hasn't been based on the 7 series since the series 2 in 2018

Not sure I will be selling my current rolls and buying the electric version, but given how quiet a internal combustion engine is, electric seems to be the most logical move for Rolls Royce. Sad to hear the wheels sound clunky at low speed, I've not had that issue in my Ghost.
If there is a car perfectly prepared for EV propulsion - its an RR. Why? the engine was traditionally never important, RR did everything to hide it anyway.
Great video. Now I want one!
I love it, but it’s so, so spec dependent!
I really don’t like that white contrast, but the blue is stunning.
I’ve seen it in Black, Dark Green/Silver & Grey, which looked incredible.
Rolls have nailed it for me
Not only is this apparently an awesome EV but it's also the best looking RR of recent times in my opinion. It has presence but avoids the brutishness of the Phantom, the weirdness of the Wraith and owners switching from Cullinans will be thankful they no longer have people waving at them from the sidewalk thinking their Uber has arrived. The Spectre has an elegance and restraint in the design language inside and out and all the better for it. Fab car and instant RR classic - I like it.... a lot !

Another, Ollie, slam dunk review. While the Spectre is, without question, a revolutionary release for the brand, it is clear that RR wasn't ready to "tinker" too far (IMHO, far too safe). Yet, somehow, Ollie had me engaged to the end. Hats off, sir. As for the Spectre, it goes without saying that electric power and RR are a match made in heaven, especially as the help will be squandering hours charging it.
