      Me too, I hate homophobic people (which probably explains why most gay shippings aren’t as popular as heterosexual ones good like JessRoger (Who Framed Roger Rabbith or bad like SonAmy (Sonic X/Sonic Riders trilogy, mainly Sonic Free Riders).) and so should everyone else.

    Cruella actually had a husband (he was a furrier, naturally) in the original book. But she was clearly the boss in their relationship, and he took her name when they married, so she was still transgressing gender norms.
    I prefer the book version of Cruella (although I haven't read it since I was a kid), because she didn't have any tragic backstory. She came from a long line of evil monsters, with several hints that her family descended from literal Devils (hence her name).

    Always fascinated by Cruella as a character. They really made a character that... literally wants to skin puppies, which is awful, but she's still somehow extremely fun and memorable... this video explained it well and I loved it! She's probably one of my favourite villains.

      Yeah, in general villains are fun when they either own their villainy, or are so amoral that they just don't care what anything thinks of them. That's one of the reasons I've been disappointed with Disney villains lately. Either they're closeted secret sociopaths like Hans, or else given some "good reason" for being bad that makes them feel wishy-washy.
      The only recent exception I can think of is Mother Gothel, except what she does is so genuinely heinous that she's just despicable.

    I loved this! I've so often heard that the lady villains of Disney represent drag, which is great. however, i've always been fascinated by them as "bad women", as they're brusque and aggressive, usually berating or mocking men around them. they stand it contrast to the female protagonist, simultaneously warning of what women should NOT be and what a woman COULD be. As usual, you pack a lot of awesome content into short videos - excellent!

    I'm shocked some people don't see Cruella as inherently queer-coded. One of my headcanons has been that Cruella was *so* fixated on making a coat out of puppies *just* to wound Anita out of spite and jealousy.

    I really like campy characters. Or even just characters who are very over the top. Rarity from Mlp Fim (she’s like a good guy version of Cruella) and Zeke from Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (he’s like a mix of Gaston and Kronk) come to mind.

    One of the best episodes of the Aladdin TV series had an anti-villain named Arbutus, a sort of plant god who kidnaps Jasmine and makes her part of his 'art.' Ron Perlman did his voice and made it silky and aristocratic and vaguely effeminate ("It needs something - LILACS!") but deeper, to give him some more gravitas. In the end he's not really evil, just bitter about humans treating his plants as lifeless objects. He's what I might call a positive queer-coded character.

    This was really interesting. Cruella is one of my favourite Disney villains partly because her goal is so reprehensible (skinning puppies. I mean come one!) but mostly because she is just so entertaining! I love it when villains can be both funny and threatening. It's a great contrast.
    Also very glad to see a video about a q-coded female characters.
    Most videos, at least the ones that I've ran across, about how Disney villains are gay -or q-coded talks about the male villains like Scar and Jafar and, if older, Captain Hook and Shere Khan. But not many talk about the female ones. So that was interesting.

    • @tobbs5410
      @tobbs5410 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't really see her goal as that reprehensible. People wear fur and leather made from other animals, after all. Why draw the line at puppies?

    I would say Cruella is the female Gaston in the way the develop as villains. They are Queer Caricatures with massive negative person traits so deep they don't even see why they are the bad guy. Their respective narratives are pushed most heavily because they cannot take rejection.
    Straight people have all of these flaws too but something about the Queer community allows them to exhibit their personality traits in a much more encapsulatable way and apply them to artistic media.
    One day we may appreciate the Queer community putting on makeup and letting us villify them for our entertainment and tell our iconic stories. Afterall a story can only be as good as it's villain, and the Queer community has painted us some incredible villains.

    as much as i enjoy this, using The Children's Hour when talking about the "predatory lesbian" trope when it intentionally subverts that (i.e. she's a lesbian but it doesn't affect her job as a schoolteacher, as the people targeting her assume) rubbed me the wrong way a bit.
