    One of the guys in my high school graduating class inherited one of these from his grandpa, who bought it brand new in 1963. So it's a second owner same family car. His is a triple black convertible. The condition is original, unrestored, unmolested, daily driver perfect. Everything on it works! Man, that 413 cross ram!
    Unrivaled style!

    Nick, I think Chrysler's idea of high performance engines in heavy/luxury cars was primarily about passing and pulling hills, vice racing. My Dad had several old heavy cars that were setup for power. He didn't do any racing, but he sure did love to kick 'em down to pass other cars, and drive fast.

    • @spaceflight1019
      @spaceflight1019 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're correct. From the Oldsmobile Tri-Power setups of the 1950s onwards the idea was to shorten the time one spent passing trucks on the two lane roads that preceded the Interstate highway system. It seemed like the passing zones were always on the downhill side of a grade, and the truck you were stuck behind could do 80 on the downhill side. GM was big with triples while Mopar liked dual quads. They even had a setup for the poly 318.

      "kick 'em down to pass other cars, and drive fast."
      That's me. I don't do any official racing, but I love passing people. Occasionally you see someone who wants to have a quick drag, or a chase on the highway and you have to answer the call.

I wish I had a Letter Series 300! That guy in my neighborhood would thrash his 300K! The body was very much like the ‘63 they made way more with single and dual 413’s! That cam is VERY well thought out. It works with the rams and exhaust. My advice after a few years with these is to have someone like crower duplicate it, then run hydraulic lifters. It makes the cam bigger. Be sure to time the cam the exact same way as your motors manual says. The true long ram cars( runners divided all the way down) (yours is a SHORT ram) cars use a special timing set with a 2 deg advance and the inline 8bbl cam. The 300j heads were the best wedge heads ever with standard ports by some accounts. Max wedge chambers. That why they were stolen. A set of 1959 "509" castings will suffice, or an early set of 324s with the disc style freeze plugs 81cc chambers, just look towards the valve seat from the port. Makes 516s look like junk! flow isn't everything. I think it would preserve it better and make more power, stay cooler with them. My 509s are factory gasket matched which makes a tremendous difference. MA mopar knew what she was doing. You get that sucker right and them dinky tires shoud be smoking at 80 mph. Give her a good exhaust those castiron headers were made to be uncapped keep factory distributor curves. Always run those style air cleaners or tubes for cold air. Those carbs are blowing alot of their fuel up when running and you must capture It, the resononces in it help the rams. I have always screwed up by leaving too many chrysler parts on the shop floor. It will probably want to be rich in the bottom end and lean out up top, my long rams will run pretty hot with those secondary jets PLUGGED! but better with a little fuel. The jetting is wrong for modern gas may need a few sizes bigger. Use the 10.0 cr and iron heads and race gas and pull timing in until she rattles just back from there. Service manual says, when hot in low and floored it should rattle for 2 seconds then stop. A reprint chrysler manual is a must. Esp with the kickdown. Lots of gauge pins, dimensions etc. Good luck!

    Hi, Nick;
    They were called letter cars.
    The whole thing started in 55 with the introduction of the first 300.
    Chrysler wanted to get into Nascar racing, on the beach and tracks.
    So they built the first 300, which had 300 hp and a 331 cubic inch Chrysler hemi with dual quads.
    It also came with heavy duty shocks, brakes, and springs. The business man's muscle/sports car.
    It did well in racing posting top speeds on the beach runs, and winning several races.
    In 56 it was the 300B. 57- 300C, and so on.
    In 59 the 300E was the first car with the 413 wedge and dual four barrel carbs inline to each other.
    The 60 300F was the first one with the ram induction on 30 inch ram tubes. It increased hp by 15% over runner type manifolds. It was designed to give power at 70 mph which is the speed most people drove, and where power was needed for passing. The ram induction was most effective between 4,500 rpm and 5,800 rpm.
    Later they shortened them to 15 inches for the max wedge drag cars.
    I had a 300 E and a 300 F.
    The 300 E pulled 135 mph stock, and 146 mph with the 300 F which was also stock, running through mufflers.
    They were wonderful cars in that era, riding well on beefed up suspension and brakes, and had much more than enough power.
    Enjoy your show. Take care of those Mopars, and look into the older ones. They're all fascinating, with each having unique engines, and racing equipment.

    Hi Nick and George, I remember these cars very well during the early 60's. One of my friends Dad bought a brand new 1964 300K. It had the 413 long ram intake, and it was a 4-speed. It was silver with a black interior. I was thrilled to get behind the wheel of that amazing car, and go for a cruise. Luxury and performance very nicely done. They are so rare now, it is awesome to see another one on Nick's Garage. Well done Mike for finding and saving this awesome car.

I made a post here earlier about THAT car, The Bankers Hotrod, as they were called. Fell in LOVVVVVVVE with your 500! History, restored. I had a 1968 Plymouth Sport Fury same color, wife hated it, the color, the sound, and the stack of speeding tickets I acquired with it. Was a 440 auto car, sold it to a cousin, who then WRAPPED it around a powerpole.

    • @eugenecastles7475
      @eugenecastles7475 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@gregblack4581 It would depend on what the Ford, and Chey's had under the hood, and of course the driver. The 413 was rated at 390HP, with the long ram intake. The Ford could have had a 390 cu engine in either 300, 330, 0r 340HP. There was also the 406 cu engine that was 385HP, or 405HP with 3 X 2bbl carbs. The 427 cu had 410HP, or 425HP with 2X 4bbl carbs. The 409 was 340HP, 400HP, or 425HP with 2X 4bbl carbs. The 300 would have had a tough time with anything that had more HP than it's 390, but they still were pretty quick for the times .

    I was 20 back in 81 and was (still am!) A lover of all things Mopar from the 50s to 70s. I had a chance to buy one. It was yellow with burgundy red interior, a truly beautiful car. I was only making $5 an hour then, and coming up with the $2800 was way out of my ballpark. But I marveled at the long ram induction. I don't think any other of the big three had a comparable system. But I LOVED the cross ram induction as well!! Truly unique and innovative times then. I believe they were like corporate executive car class. That was probably a top of the line car in its day and I love how the Chrysler Corporation done alot of their automobiles. I's 4yrs old when the car was built and I can't believe how much it reminds me of a car my dad had exactly like that one. I remember the bucket seats and console but he didn't have it very long and I's a teen when he had it and I never seen under the hood but I remember the steering wheel, push button shift and the console and bucket seats and it blows my mind with how much the one he had looked exactly like that one. I remember it sounded good and I'm pretty sure that it ran good. I'm anxious to see the outcome of the engine rebuild and a mechanical tachometer blows my mind, and the power brakes setup. Good luck with it with it Nick and I'm 100% sure that it's going to be running really good when you're done with it...

    Howdy from Arizona Nick! Love the old MOPAR content!
    When I was about 6 years old, my Grandfather bought a 1962 Chrysler 300H. It was white with a red leather interior, and had the slanted headlights just like the 1961, but without the tail fins. His also had the push-button Torqueflite and that 413 wedge, but it had a short ram intake manifold with two 4 barrels. The speedometer and all instruments were under a dome which was really cool! There were only 435 of the "H" models made in 1962 (and only 6 convertibles, but his was NOT a convertible). It was a great high speed highway cruiser! Old grandpa got a ticket at 140mph near Fresno California in '68.
    It wasn't until I was 16 in 1972 that grandpa let me drive his baby. Up until then, the most powerful vehicle I'd driven was Dad's '56 Ford F250 with a Y-block 292. I remember that by '72 grandpa had well over 280,000 miles on his 300H. It had really tall gear ratio and was a dog from a standing start, but it would still smoke the tires at 35mph in first gear! When it kicked down, it was like getting launched! Sure wish I could have inherited that baby.

    Around 1966, I drove a car identical to this several times. A friend of my dad's traded a black Chrysler 300 C for a white Chrysler 300J with that champagne interior. 413 with duce 4 barrels. It was a real monster for its time. I was 16, and the owner would give me the keys every couple of weeks to take it home and wash and detail it. Of course, I couldn't resist seeing what it could do, and for a heavy car, it could do a lot. That car started my lifelong love of cars with muscle.

    Back in the 80's, I was loaned to help clean up after a tornado went through after a car auction that my boss's brother had put on. There was a J there, and I looked at the guy I was working with and said "Raise the hood, and you'll see something that you've never seen before."
    I knew it was a gamble as some came with dual quads on the engine instead of the Long Ram intake.
    The car in front of us had the Long Ram intake, and he was amazed at the Long Ram. It still had oil bath air filters.
    Interesting thing about the Long Ram intake is that it requires a special camshaft that pulses the mix through the intake, which causes it to be pulsed into the engine at a higher velocity.
    If it's set up correctly, the engine should deliver peak torque somewhere between 1000 and 1500 RPM.
    I had a non letter '63 300 four door hardtop with a 383 RB two barrel. It had an AM/FM radio, and an after market Sears A/C, which was made by Airtemp, so it was all Chrysler. The parking brake was a single drum brake on the tail shaft of the transmission. Mine also had the "Jukebox drive" (what my friends and I called it) shifter.
    I also was able to bump start it. Mine would start at 11 MPH, and the owners manual said 15 MPH.
    I've been kicking myself for ever having sold it for decades now.

He remarked on how quiet the engine was, and to demonstrate, switched off the ignition as we were driving. “See? You can’t tell the difference”. Then he turned the key back on, and KABLOOEY! We almost died laughing! John Paul Tapp went on to become one of the best auto mechanics I’ve ever run across!

    My friend had one of those early Valiants with the big 225 Slant six and the pushbutton auto, though on his it wasn't D for drive - It was D for DRAG! He went through 3 torqueflites in the time he had it, and on the last one the trans shop said "Hey, if you break this one we don't know if we can rebuild another one for you- parts are getting hard to find for these" Lol, but did we have fun in those days!

    I have a 1964 Dodge 4 Door 440 GAM that needs complete restoration now but I loved that PushButton TF-727 Transmission on it.
    Little hint on those old cars scratching off, they didn't like to unless you found the cars sweet spot start it put it in low/first gear, then while holding the brake and pressing the gas pedal turn the steering wheel slightly to the right, then when you hear the tires squeal a little stomp the gas and let the brake go and HOLD ON TO YOUR LUGNUTS Lol don't be afraid to Tach-it-out a little bit.

    Nick as you may know, there were two versions of this system. A long and a short. This car appears to have the "SHORT" version as evidenced by the carburetor plenum extending half way down the runner making the torque at a higher RPM.

    Great video. The car is not as huge as I would have thought for the 60's. My parents had a '76 Cordoba which was about the same size, and it was the smallest Chrysler of its day. It was only a 360 2 barrel. The 400 4 barrel would have been more comparable to that 300J, although I think it was only 240 HP.
    The owner was a brave man to drive it all that way with all those leaks and cranky carbs.

    • @skip7243
      @skip7243 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bought a 76 Doba new with the 400. Problematic engine with the lean burn but a smooth driving comfortable vehicle. Also in the case of our car, at near 30K miles a rod went out in the days of 24 month, 24K mile warranties. Tear down revealed a non standard rod bearing in # 8, seems to me the factory pushed it through when it should have been scraped!
      I remained a Mopar fan however.

    • @hendo337
      @hendo337 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That was 240 net HP not Gross, there was an E68 400 that made up to 260hp in certain applications. The E57 360 isn't a bad engine at all, cam, intake, carb, headers and a 360 can out run a 383 if it's geared right to take advantage of the high rpm capabilities. The LA engines were very close in size to the earlier Chrysler Poly and Hemi engines and have a great head design with high ports. The weight savings is huge too.

    The long ram was meant to optimize torque in the low to mid range ( like 2800 rpms or so ) to get the heavy cars they were installed in moving. The shorter cross rams on the Max Wedge had stronger mid and top end. Runner length is life.

    • @BuzzLOLOL

      A 30" runner is the same as the TPI 350 L98 that was in 80s Corvettes. The supercharging effect works strong between 2500-4500 rpms peaks around 5000 and falls on it's face by 5500.

    Chrysler experimented with exhaust manifolds with success!!? The 300K made 360HP with the single 4BBL carburetor and the dual carburetor made 390HP! Depending on the wide range of rear gears the could accelerate hard for a heavy car! The long geared ones could cruise at over 140MPH. They set a record on some in the salt flats doing the Running Mile! Granitelli set records with a 300F or 300G . I have to check my books but he really experimented with his on the salt flats with huge success!

    So, that car has the optional "short runner long rams." (The later Max Wedge engines were a shorter ram intake, but completely different casting). The actual manifolds length was the same but the divider wall between the intake runners was shorter. The short runner manifolds are visually identifiable by the flat portion on the manifold branch top. The long runners had the divider wall and corresponding groove on the top the full length.
