According to my rabble coteriemate, the proper way to pronounce it is "Booyah."

My favorite archetype for a Brujah is the "burnout mercenary." You've seen causes rise and fall dozens of times and you're sick of it. If all you can do is make sure you're safe in your position, so be it. No skin off your back if the Primogen want to pay you solve problems for them. But how many times can you watch the local Prince enslave their neonates before that voice in the back of your head tells you enough is enough? What's it going to take to drag you back into the fight? Are you a beaten dog, or are you a philosopher king?

"stay mad and cope, for I am the lore."
I may not be your favorite malkavian, but you are my most beloved nosferatu, Good Lore.

Ah, the Brujah. I like them, no matter how you pronounce them.^^
I think you, as usual, got to the point of the clan, the individual passion! The creation of a Brujah should, in my humble opinion, always start with what they are passionate about. The reason why they impressed their sire to turn them(if aplicable). Be it a political idiology or even taking down a local power company that chops down a forest and destorys villages for the coal below. (Sounds like werewolf, happens in germany).
That also means that not every Brujah needs to be a punk, far from it! Please, to everyone that reads this, resist the urge to just have the sex pistols with fangs!

Oddly I consider the brujah one of the hardest clans to plan in modern nights. They're treated almost as protagonists but the setting is too jaded to fully commit.

I love that no matter what clan you prefer, all of them are nuanced and have their own personalities. Makes it hard to choose though I think I am going Malk for my first chronicle.

My take on building a revolutonary character is to ask the question: Who do they think should be free?
    There are 3 answer categories:
    Everyone should be free
    We should be free
    I should be free
The distinction is subtle as all 3 of those interact with and sometimes mirror each other's actions (specially when the "I should be free" crowd pay lip service to or sometimes actually agree with the other crowds), plus there is also the 4th answer: I don't care about freedom.
This helps answer the question of why a character does what they do.

I know I'm a "day late and a dollar short", but I REALLY appreciate your explanation of the ACTUAL pronunciation of Clan Brujah. Back in the late '90s I belonged to "The Camarilla" LARP, nationwide. I got into far to many OOC debates about how "bruja" (broo-ha) was incorrect.
Even after I started carrying around a xerox copy of that 1st edition page, literally everyone I met outside of my town refused to pronounce it "broo-zha". Once, I was actually told "It's broo-ha, so f**k off". Yeah, it was that volatile sometimes.
    I'm 54 and been using Broo-zha since 1992.
Every other pronunciation is flat out WRONG.
Edit to add- I'm really looking forward to your pronunciation of Tzimisce :)

Sounds awesome, I hope that we'll get Tzemisce eventually as well, I love the fact that you don't have to be Sabbat to play them.
A cool idea for a character would be:
You were a Black Ops agent on a mission to investigate a monster and bit off more than you could chew, you fought very well for a Human that never encountered one, that monster however, was impressed, you're one yourself now.

Yes! That's my favorite Clan!, Thanks!
Also just as a mention and cool character concept that I just came up with for a Tzemisce, I'd love to know what you think about it (It came out as a short backstory, I hope that you'll enjoy it):
I like the idea that as a player character that plays as a Black Ops agent he was sent to investigate something that derailed (which is an understatement) a mission of a team that was found in pieces with only one of them who managed to escape and claimed it was the doing of a well known psychotic agent who went AWOL years ago, and the PC was essentially sent to unwittingly hunt a very old Tzemisce Vampire, he was certain that he was going up against a well known psycho who went AWOL that he was sure was dead, and of course he were right, he was dead, it wasn't him, in fact he died alongside that team on that very mission, they were all massacred, he wasn't the one who did it, and just as the PC depart on the chopper, the Inquisition tried to get in touch with him to warn him, but it was too late, he was gone, and as expected, he bit off more than he could chew, all along he was sure he were going up against that psycho untill he found out that he was dead all along, also torn to pieces and almost bloodless, long before he and his now deceased team arrived, and in a last ditch effort, he used all your traps, cunning, tenacity and remaining ammo in a last stand against the beast, and then to his horror it turned out to be an odd pale man that after a hail of bullets started to shift into a monster in front of him, in a surge of adrenaline he decided to run to his fallback position and use his RPG, and to his dismay that thing was tougher and faster than it looked, as it charges out of the fire, the the PC took out his Kukri machete and fought as best he could, he even managed to get in quite a few hits that he was sure we're supposed to end any man or beast he ever fought, but that abomination, simply, didn't-go-down!, then he shouted in anger and desperation, "What are you?!", then it answered, riddled with holes, gashes and burn marks that were healing right in front of him, "You fought well, it would be a shame to kill you...", then he answered in angry defiance "My team send their regards you bastard!" And as he reached for the chord on his anti personnel mine on his chest, the monster was too quick, it ripped the mine off his chest and tossed it far away, it exploded, next thing he knew, he went numb, couldn't move, and right before everything goes dark he said barely conscious "We had a good run fellas, what a way to....go....", and the next thing he knew, he burst out of a shallow grave, breathing sharply as all his memories of recent events play out in his mind in in quick and blurry succession, a garbled mess of noise, flashes and pain, all he did was just scream in anger, and then after he finally calmed down, then he saw the strange pale man, well dressed this time, sitting on a tree stump, looking at him expectantly.
Narrator: "And the unwitting hunter, became what he hunted..."
      What do you think?

My favorite brujah character concept is a human rights lawyer in life. His sire had hoped to recover a bit of the academic brujah sophistication. It didn't work. My working title for the character is "Whoops! All Presence!" Since he can't work as a lawyer anymore, he closed his old cases by seducing and enthralling the opposing councils with Lingering Kiss and getting them to throw the cases. At first glance, he could be mistaken for a Toreador, but all of his romancing is driven by spite. He has a list of every corporate and government figure who has wronged the workers of his city, and he will chomp his way through it.

I'm a latino, a native Spanish speaker and we play VtM in Spanish. We call them Broo-yah,
1- It means witch/sorceress and such does not align with the identity of the clan
2- In Venezuela, "bruja" is a slang for a treacherous person, a snitch or a cop.
And my Brujah (read: broo-yah) player explicitly required that pronunciation. Being a "bruja" is the complete opposite of his character.

For Brujah I do usually chose a character who has a strong belief in something actionable and are willing to act.
Next to the normal revolutionary concepts the last actual Brujah I played was a marine who did very much beliefe in the US and command chains. Being embraced when the local Brujah were in a war with the Ventrue, basically as canon fodder. She made it to the position of Sherrif in her home domain, yet when she had to move to another where they did not only not ackknowledge her status but even not her being in the Camarilla, but seeing her Camarilla comrades almost getting an Anarch NPC offed via SI (where she managed a helter skelter rescue mission) asked her to steal a pregnant Thinblood ~ where she was to cynical to belief either mom or child would survive - she went Anarch.
    Other than that, my Hecata who moonlit among the movement and Brujah as a Caitiff got repeatedly mislabled as a Brujah by NPCs and the coterie, because she was quite opinionated (that and she failed every single hunger frenzy test). Which proved that one doesn't need any notable physical stats to get the spirit ^.^;

nearly did a spit-take at "yeet a brick at a cop or yeet a cop at a brick. ....-wall"
also, I just like saying "Bruise-Ya" ...because grass grows, birds fly, sun shines... and brotha,
    they hurt people.

What I wouldnt give for a comparison video of the uses of "bru-hah" vs the uses of "bru-jah". Another example of this funny thing is everyone saying Camarilla with the two L's sounding like a y, when the word is German and thus pronounced with the two L's just sounding like L's. Pronounce brujah and camarilla as you will they're both right no matter what the "childe of dawkins" has to say about it

I feel that in V-larp there is a tendancy to play BroJahs like some Rockers and stuff. Like hooligans.
Man, i allways felt like this misses the point. I fully agree, they are not angry, they are passionate. Its the core to burn for something as a Pruhja.
jet thats whats makes them hard - No one likes changes, jet Brujah like them a lot. There is something right about them. Or deeply deeply wrong if the passion sits right.

the name come from the spanish inquisition. so to my understanding (which could absolutely be wrong), the J should be pronounced as CH. just like a Z would be pronounced as TH. not sure where everyone else got it from, but that always used to be my reasoning.

  • @TheChesher

I'd go with Ex military, Mercenary or Spec Ops, because for a Brujah to have ties to these things is a recipe for danger and intrigue alongside higher than average skills.
Imagine being a Black/Spec ops agent that got embraced by a Brujah one day, with zero explanation, just the "where and when" alone is a good start for plothook.
    What do you think?
