    Watching Laettner interviews is great. He doesn’t exactly look back fondly on his Dream Team experience (watch the Rich Eisen interview) but he knows how much that mythology means to people so he continues to “act like a rookie” and give people the stories they want to hear.

      @@Jondsmusic not gonna argue that. Between Coach K being there and thinking tall white guy that can shoot from 20 ft not many options. At least allowed them to practice like Larry was there all the time.
      Laetner was also glorified bag boy, coffee donuts guy. Yes a lot of ppl were better player options. Even Shaq out of college was clearly gonna have more success in NBA. They didn't need a guy for game minutes, just practice minutes which Shaq was not gonna get over Robinson or Ewing.
      They also needed a guy who had the best chance to know the game inside out. Does anyone think they were actually running offensive plays? The answer is no, everyone just new what to do. If this guy sets screen next guy makes a cut other guy goes back door. It was all ran on instinct and John Stockton talked about that. It's been a 30 yr discussion over nothing!

    • @Jondsmusic
      @Jondsmusic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joe Smith being white has absolutely nothing to do with it! My simple point if you don’t replace a legend like the goat, there’s no getting around that. I would have preferred Stockton quite frankly would have been a much superior option. He could have flown the plane and it still wouldn’t have made any difference, so that argument doesn’t wash!

    • @JoeSmith-iv3sf
      @JoeSmith-iv3sf 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Jondsmusic preferred Stockton for what? And Yes Larry was was white and Laetner was white there parents were white, white, white, white. Lol after everything I said there first thing you take is oh he didn't have to be white lol. They tried to find a human being w a similar game as Larry, pretty much failed was no real sub. But they guy they got filled the other rolls they needed for the team.
      You can dismiss them but it's the actual players words. This is what they said in interviews . From Christian Himself on what he did, and players like Stockton talking about practice and the offense in other interviews. So I would say it holds pretty good weight.

    Laettner was the best college player that year but he wasn’t the most dominant one at that time. The most dominant player, who I personally feel should’ve gotten picked over Laettner, was Shaq. Imagine Shaq being on the 92 Dream Team?

    • @monkeyb1820

      a point that was mentioned on another podcast is that Laettner played his role really well, he wasn't expecting or expected to get a lot of playing time. With Shaq, that might have been different. And based purely on the college resume, Laettner fully deserved to be there. Laettner may not have been quite as athletic as someone like Tom Chambers, but had he been drafted into the right situation with the right coach/teammates, he probably would have had a better NBA career (although it was still pretty good, he was no bust).

    Laettner in today's NBA would be a Jokic.
    As I've said many times, Petino did it wrong. Once he didn't get top 2 pick in 97, to get Duncan or Van Horn, he should've traded for Laettner, Mashburn, & Anderson. Imagine having those 3 on a team back then??

      They gave the last spot to a college kid as a nod to history of the teams being college guys... that spot was always only going to a college player... it was announced as part of the deal from day 1... no pro was ever under consideration for the 12th slot... he had just finished what was among the very best college careers ever... was POY and had outplayed Shaq and Mourning in head to heads... the criteria for it was based solely on most outstanding college player... which he was... and not best future prospect... which Shaq clearly was.
