- This is a very old breed. In fact, some authorities maintain that the Afghan Hound is the oldest breed of purebred dogs. (An ancient myth says that a brace of Afghan Hounds represented the canine species on Noah’s Ark.)

I love my Afghan Hound to pieces, as she is especially wonderful in every way. Friendliest dog you'll ever meet , and she approaches strangers while we're out on a walk, begging for them to pet her. She loves the homeless man we pass, and tries to climb in the mail truck with the mailman too. She and I share the same hairbrush, as I have long hair like hers, and I brush mine first and then hers before we head out. She is 3 1/2 years old, and our first Affie girl lived to be nearly 17. Best dogs ever !
I am fortunate enough to own an Afghan hound. I’ve also owned many cats throughout my life and yes my dog is very cat like. He is also very sweet and loving with me, follows me everywhere, but aloof with strangers. Wherever I take him people tell me how beautiful he is and ask me about him. So when getting an Afghan hound be prepared not only for the extensive grooming, but also all the attention the dog will attract. My Afghan hound’s name is Neo, he is one year old and I absolutely adore him. This video is the most accurate depiction I’ve seen of the Afghan hound on TH-cam.

We first saw Afghans in Memphis as teens in the '60s. Playing in yards, so cat like. Love cats. We married, 4 years of Navy, and home. Our 1st Afghan in 1980. Decades to follow, all cat like 😊 creatures. They still take my breath.
Excellent video! I'm a sighthound FANATIC!! Afghans are one of my favorites. Absolutely gorgeous dogs! Admittedly, I was starting to feel a certain way those two times she mentioned Dobies (I'm a Dobermom), but overall, she made me love and respect this breed even more! Her talks about grooming were EXTREMELY IMPORTANT and relevant. Not to say that the dog was/needed to be given up, but I used to live near a woman who owned an Afghan, and the dog needed some SERIOUS grooming! Every time my Ramsey and I would see her on our walks, her dog's hair was always a scraggly mess, or one time she cut almost all of the dogs hair off and it was styled into what I can only describe as a full-body bowl cut... understandably, not a flattering look for such a majestic breed.

I had an afghan dog and he was the most gentle one owner dog. I named him Khan. It's name means king. They were great with my kids. He got loose out of his outside cage and I got a call 10miles from my home and 2blocks from where I worked. So he was trying to find me at work. I had to get him out of dog jail after. He was so happy to see me.

My mother bred and showed Afghans in the 70’s and 80’s so I grew up with many of them.
Love seeing them at the shows here in SO CA a lady in a confirmation class I go to has 2 that have their CH. title already and aren't even 1 year old...very nice dogs just love looking at the beauty of them...I have a Whippet I show I'm a sight hound lover.
My family got one when I was around 10 and he was a really wonderful dog in some ways and a pain in the arse in others - though I loved him dearly. He was quite large for an Afghan with more heavy set muzzle and head than what is seen here but still very fast and agile. He did okay in shows but his speciality was lure coursing as we (mostly I) started to let him roam free while on walks as he got a bit older and less prone to escaping - my parents live in a rather rural and heavily forested area so little danger of getting hit by a car which can be a problem with Afghans as they like to chase cars, and unfortunately also trains.
The initial problem was that the dog didn't listen my dad that well, my mother really didn't walk him, and with my brother it was 50% chance nice and 50% chance "bye, I'm outta here..." situation. He got better with them as he got older but with me there was never issues as I was likely the calmest around him. The trick is that you had to give a lot trust to the dog, he would often either advance or drag behind, out of sight, but you could trust him not to get further away than a hundred meters at most. He would then either come back to you or wait for you to catch up. This also worked great with our three Salukis. I don't have any experience with other breeds but with Afghans and Salukis respect goes a long way and you do better if you just forget the alpha nonsense that may work with some doggos - they are great companions but poor servants. Naturally it also depends on temperament of the dog.
The only downside is that he would drag half of the forest back home in his fur which made my mom not too happy, but hey, at least I helped with washing and grooming - erm... sometimes... He really hated getting washed, too, despite being introduces to it at a very young age. Brushing was fine, blow dryer was fine but shower was apparently torture and towel drying was never fast enough for him. It was always more like washing a Husky rather than an Afghan... (sorry for stereotyping your doggo, husky owners!)

She said something that my mother likes to say and I have to disagree with both of them. “ why get an afghan if you’re just going to shave it down.” There is nothing wrong with loving the breed but not wanting to deal with all the coat. If you want one because you love their elegant look but rather not deal with the coat and you have no plans in showing then go ahead and shave him or her down. There is nothing wrong with keeping a afghan in a short coat. Heck give the dog a cowboy cut if you have to. Nothing wrong with that…. It’s you’re dog you can keep him or her with a long coat or a short one.
@@jennagove5757 Because Greyhounds and Afghans aren't the same. In my experience with both Greys are a bit more reserved, while Afghans are total clowns. I'm not gonna get a Greyhound because some day down the line I'm gonna shave my Afghan when I'm done showing her, because I don't enjoy Greyhounds in the same way I do Afghans. This is also a bit like saying 'Why get a Standard Poodle if you're just gonna shave it down? Just get a Lab' Because they're completely different breeds, even though they were bred for similar purposes

I’m from Afghanistan and our hunting dogs more close resemble greyhounds, salukis, and sloughis. We call them tazi or tazy. These very long haired hounds are show ring versions of the real thing. And actually many countries throughout Central Asia use Tazi dogs for their hunting, not just Afghanistan

You can actually google the afghan hounds that were imported over a hundred years ago. They look almost identical to the modern ones :) although some definitely do have more coat now.
@@ASMR_Noir could you link a picture I think I saw the wrong photos or tell me what to type. The one I saw was in the 1800s and it had a short coat and the website went on about how they're aren't any reliable photos of original ones
The people saying that shows ruined the breed have never seen these dogs run and it shows. Please do Borzois next!

The breeders have turned this wonderful creature into a four legged Farrah Fawcett. That's why they have such a hard time winning the Group in major shows, let alone BIS. Judges look at them as all bark and no bite. All the judges see is the hair and that show horse prancing movement and in their minds that doesn't translate into a hunting dog ,which is what the afghan was bred to do, hunt. I speak from personal knowledge, I've owned 7 of these glorious goof balls.

They are very beautiful and interesting but she is right, they need a very dedicated owner that's aware of their upkeep. Between the fact that they require a lot of coat maintenance and the fact that they are fairly difficult to train, they are definitely not for everyone. I think if the coat were the only real concern more people would own them. When the average person is trying to have a well behaved dog and they are really trying, but the dog is not responding nearly as quickly or readily as other dogs, it makes it very discouraging and people give up on them.
The same goes for a lot of breeds. Standard Poodles are a big handful, intelligent, easy to train, but smart enough to outsmart you. Also they have a huge coat to deal with. Irish Setters, and all the Setters - similar. German Shepherds, you have to worry about someone getting bitten which is a nightmare scenario to me. Airedales - kind of the ideal dog actually - haven't had a lot of trouble with them, but Siberians? Oh my god never again.

These Afghan hounds absolutely ARE man-made. LOL. Good of you to catch that. :)
A good rule of thumb to use is that most undomesticated mammals have pricked ears, not floppy ears so they can hear predators coming if they are prey animals, or listen out for prey clearly if they are predators. Man has bred dogs to have floppy ears. Notice how huskys and malamutes, who are said to be the most closely related to wolves, have pricked ears.
Means little human interference. Central asian shepherds have a very unique head structure because dogs were left to survive or die and natural selection took place.
it basically means they took dogs already displaying those shape and structure and select them. in general, some mountain dogs do have tapered head and enlongated bodies.
I'm assuming she meant that as in regarding to their temperament. Afghans are considered a primitive breed, like Sighthounds and some hunting Spitz breeds, and temperamentally they have remained unchanged for the last 5000 or so years. It's still very much in their instinct to act independent and aloof to people and focus on the hunt

Agreed by veterinarians and dog experts to be the least trainable dog breed in the world.
They are trainable, it just takes understanding this breed. They are highly intelligent . Independent minded. Training is different for this breed as they don't take to harsh commands, you have to make it fun so they WANT to do it. Harshness will ruin the dog. I've had them all my life and they are unlike other breeds. People who haven't had the breed don't understand. I'll link a video that shows they are trainable. They don't like to do silly tricks like chasing a ball, they feel it is beneath them. Anyway, I could write alot to explain them but it would turn into a book, not enough room here.

Afghans I have had there is two types one has a fuller than the other. if mine would not come when I called I used to hide. mine used to go and stand by my grandchildren when it was born if anybody came to the house and if they looked in the pram they would put their head on the pram.

Why are the breeders selling dogs to people that don't know what they are getting into in the first place? sounds like BYB honestly, playing on the public's drive for vanity then people that want to actually care for a whole dog.

I highly doubt this dog can last a day out in the wilderness with all that hair getting anything and everything stuck in it and the weight it is carrying along.
Just like any other working breed in shows, if the working dog, with a lot less hair and more drive is let in the desert, it would definitely survive, just not the show line ones.
She was talking about their intelligence when she said that her dog could survive at least 2 weeks in it's native environment, I doubt she was talking about dropping it in the wilderness in full show coat. There are plenty of breeds higher on the traditional intelligence lists that just don't have the prey drive and independence to make it on their own away from humans for more than a couple days. Afghan hounds have been frequently been characterized as dumb because they aren't obedient, but obedience isn't always beneficial to a dog. A sighthound that doesn't always obey is more likely to get the opportunity to eat it's kill than one that is always obedient. Depending on whether the person working it has the dog's best interests at heart or not, that could be the difference between the dog merely surviving or thriving.
Most show breeders do not keep the dogs they aren't showing in full show coat, and any "working breed" with a continuously growing coat would have to be cut back by it's owners from time to time anyway. Afghan hounds always had a variety of coat types for the variety of terrains they were kept in. The dogs with the heavier coats came from more mountainous regions where a heavier coat was necessary. I don't doubt that the coats for the original lines were less fine and therefore less prone to matting, but they certainly weren't saluki smooth. Also important to consider is that conditioner, other grooming tools, and the amount of time spent on grooming make a lot of difference in how these dogs look. Sometimes people think that a dog's breeding is a bigger part of their appearance than it actually is (like those who think poodles have naturally smooth faces and feet). Someone working the dog would cut it back, cut out the mats, and be done with it.
I was hoping in vain they would switch narrator at some point, as her voice isn't of the pleasing kind. They could have had her on for a minute or two and then switched.
Rosemary Sutton knows Afghan Hounds and about Afghanistan, loved them in the '60s. You aren't gleaning her knowledge, but discard her because her voice aged. Oh. Read text if you're so bothered. She bred Afghans, handled them, groomed them and she didn't miss much. A small woman who flew around a ring. Don't be bothersome.
My Dogo killed one of these. The owner had him off leash and this breed charged my Dogo, big mistake.
