    Andrew and Darshan Wienick are proud Saluki owners. In this video they share with the Dogumentary TV family, their life with their pack of Salukis.
    Salukis are sighthounds-hunting by sight-and run their quarry down to retrieve it. The normal size range for the breed is 23-28 inches (58-71 cm) high at the withers and 40-60 pounds (18-27 kg) in weight. Female salukis are slightly smaller than males. The head is long and narrow with large eyes and drop ears.[6] The tail of the breed is long and curved. It has the typical deep-chested, long-legged body of sighthounds. The coat comes in a variety of colors including white, cream, fawn, red, grizzle/tan, black/tan, and tri-color (white, black and tan).

    "It's like living with royalty."
    This is what I always thought of Salukis. There's just something so regal and graceful about their stance, movement, and general physical appearance. So monarch-level.

      Kaitlyn Jenkins shar pei dogs can be great apartment dogs and don't need much exercise only around 40 mins however are very stubborn and not a good first time dog has they need lots of training and lots of grooming to care for the wrinkles on them. Borzois need lots of space and a exercise and lots of training they also aren't the best in living in apartments but they are a loving affectionate breed to their owners. I would suggest doing more research as well so you can get all the info you need on these breeds!

      We had a male borzoi who was unfortunately a bit agressive. They can be very nervous and agressive, I've heard from many other borzoi owners. But of course loved him to bits. It was very hard with him, but he was obedient as can be. Could walk off leash, once he even went after a rabbit in the woods, but came back with just one call back. The older he got, the harder it was with him (but we also blame the breeder for carrying on with breeding a nervous mom)

    • @sjsisjsjks
      @sjsisjsjks 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@TheGardenOfMae Western-bred shar pei have a lot of health problems and low quality of life because of it. Inverted eyelashes rubbing against their eyes, stenotic nares (nostrils pinched shut), tons of skin problems. They are very loyal to one person although still aloof towards them and can be nice enough with tons and I mean tons of socialization as a pup, but still not exactly friendly or "doggy", same thing as with Akitas, Chows, etc. You need a professional puppy trainer involved from day 1. They are known for having a quiet, short fuse like those two as well - no growling, straight to the bite. Not a good choice for families. If you're still interested there are healthier "traditional"/"bone mouth" shar pei breeders out there but very expensive and hard to find. A somewhat similar breed to the traditional shar pei is the Thai Ridgeback.
      Borzoi are known to be more neurotic and wild-animal-like than the other sighthounds, they are a sight to behold but require a very specific lifestyle. Namely living in the secluded Russian wilderness as a hunting hound. Go for a greyhound, whippet or saluki instead if you think a sighthound is right for you.

    I had 2 Saluki's, we trained them not to chew things and not to beg or steal food, they learned very quickly and were the most respectful dogs. It is also possible to train so that they will not run after squirrels while off leash, but that does take quite a bit of time. Truly Incredible creatures.

    I lived in the Dominican Republic in the late 90s. My dad agreed that we could get a dog. His vet for our cats had rescued a pregnant street dog and offered us one of her puppies. I was so excited when we were able to pick our puppy up. Adorable puppy as they all are, I had no idea that I would be getting THE most special being to come into my life. We named him Chico and couldn’t wait for him to grow and see what kind of dog he was. He grew into a lean, elegant, amazing looking dog that everyone would ask what kind of dog is that. We didn’t know, he was so unique looking and just as human like as he could be. So we swabbed his mouth and sent out for his DNA analysis. He was majority Saluki mixed with unknown hound. We had never heard of this dog and were so surprised to read up on their origins. We have always wondered how a Dominican street dog had a dog part Saluki 🤷‍♀️. I’m SO grateful she did! Best dog EVER. A once in a lifetime type dog. I will never forget him, he lived 18 years. He was fantastic! This video reminds me of him because the similarities are amazing. I would love to own another one day. Chico always behaved as if he were human 😄

    • @CoinCentrado
      @CoinCentrado 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most of the dogs in Dominican Republic, the street dogs, are sight hounds. They were brought by Christopher Columbus to help them get food in these lands they knew nothing about. That is why a lot of them look so skinny, which is sad because people look down on them thinking they're sick because you can see their ribs and whatnot. I too hung out with these dogs, took me a while to discover their breed, but once you do realize they are hunting dogs everything makes sense. They are the most gentle and magestic dog I've met, a true companion and an asset to any person or family regardless of how active they are. I would never pay for a dog, only Saluki or another sight hound, only dog worth my money.

    We live in the UK and used to have a saluki x greyhound he loved to sit on my lap like a cat.
    If we tried to keep him out of the bedroom at night he would howl to be with us.
    He once jumped straight over a 1.5 meter high gate from standing and chased the paper boy on his bike. Thankfully the paperboy wasn't hurt and had a sense of humor and was laughing as i prized the dogs jaws from his trousers leg. Somebody once put their hand into our daughter's pram he had hold of their wrist before i could blink. but he was so gentle he didnt even scratch them.
    He had a quirky personality and constantly made us laugh.

      there many reasons ( btw i have other breeds, canario + two german shepherds)
      main reasons , no dog smell ( odor ) and they dont drool + they dont attack humans ( maybe if you train them to attack) + they usually dont interact with human physically ( independent) they like to have their own space
      + to us here in saudi arabia these the best dog can live in our climate where it s easy to reach 50 c in summer
      there is misinformation that musilms use these dogs because they are clean as she said in this video
      the turth is that this dog breed is available and used every where in middle east especially in the past ( where it is population are mainly muslims) + plus in islam dogs should not be pets or business ( buying and selling them) only if you need them for a reason like hunting or gaurding and saluki are excellent for hunting
      Unfortunately this breed becomes recently as rich people pets

    Correction; They are "the" oldest breed in history descended from the wolf. They are "the" fastest top speed dog faster than the greyhound, as well as have the most endurance, far more endurance than greyhounds, there bones are full of hollows like a birds, their lungs work differently. There spine is designed differently frim thousands of years of breeding to rotate & flex. Behaviourally they sleep all day, can be nippy, so not the best for having very young children, these guys have been lucky with the cat, I deffinatley don't recommend any animal in the house small enough to for them to kill. The most agressive guard dogs you could get. These guys have been lucky by training them from from puppies, but in general they can be VERY Agressive & try to kill other dogs, if you get a rescue that hasn't been trained or treated well then you will need to muzzle them any time you leave the house with them. As stated in the video you cannot let them off the lead unless they are in an enclosure, they will run off into traffic & depending on their upbringing may try to attack & kill any animal that moves. I have had lots of different breeds of dog & 2 full bred salukis & two saluki crosses, even the full bred puppy saluki could be incredibly aggressive to the older saluki & took over. They are the most beautiful breed of all dogs, very clever & have the most human personalities of all dogs but be warned of the aggression in some of these dogs, you can not train them out of something they have been bred do to for 10 thousand years, which is to run around the dessert killing gazelles & anything else that moves.

    Very sensible one minute and daft as a brush the next. Loving dogs, who are good for everyone. Recently lost our boy, Osh, who was a rehome and aged about 15 when he went - such a great dog and really missed. We had ours with cats and no problem, happy around kids of all ages, love food and not fussy on what they eat. They will generally do whatever it is you want to do until they decide it's their turn and that's when the personality comes out. Osh would always stamp his front paws on the floor like some petulant child telling off their parents.... but always in a fun way. Quite vocal when they want/need to be. Not really a guard dog as such, but were great for telling me when the mobile phone/MS Teams was calling... the dog knew what a ring tone was and would always alert me to it. Seemed to naturally understand any and all commands related to sleeping/bed etc. Super dog breed and one I can highly recommend for anyone.

    Totally correct about everything. Thank you. Having been married to a Saluki ( please laugh ) 35 years ago, he was a Prince. X x oo, my darling Pagan. Beautiful creature. Wish that I could post his picture.

    I got what I thought was a great Pyrenees but as she grew it was obvious she wasn't purebred. Did a DNA test on her and she's got Saluki in her. Not much but it explains her structure, her bark and whine sound, she's 75% pyrenees but she has almost all the characteristics of a Saluki. It's nice to finally understand why she's the way she is.

    My highschool mascot is a Saluki!! In the 70s our school combined with another school and decided on the name because the sports conference we were part of was the North Egypt Conference (I think southern Illinois is known as North Egypt, don't ask me why). It also had to do with SIU being the Salukis.

    Adored our Saluki, she was very nurturant and mothered two stray kittens and also a jack russel puppy. . Is her huge.y but I am now too old to consider taking on another.

    My mother’s side of the family is into showing, like showing dogs and we own Salukis. Currently we own 5, we didn’t train them to not chase things or bark or chew things or anything else, but we did train them to sit, lay down, stay, etc. they are truly magnificent creatures, and a huge part to me is that they all have such unique personalities. They grow strong bonds and make social groups, it’s beautiful to own one. Truly like living with royalty. My siblings and I must have helped grow them to be used to kids, so I would say if they’ve been around kids their whole lives, they will be friendly towards them. My family used to own 6 Salukis and if we still had twilight we would’ve had 7. We own one smooth Saluki while the rest are all feathered, Salukis are also very good at turning fast. Our Salukis chase each other around the yard switching between who’s being chased. Sometimes, if it’s just two in the yard, Anthem and Cisco will chase each other flipping back and forth until they stumble away or have to go inside. Sense Salukis are sight hounds, they are very observant, but one of ours, JL, often stares at the tv watching it. It’s very true that Salukis are couch lovers, so to help them we made a rule that they can only be on the couch if they are on a blanket or someone’s lap. This rule is broken by Anthem and occasionally shimmer.
