Funny enough I had one of those tiny cans of orange fanta in my hand...was listening to this with my screen locked doing chores so I was just listening and I just stopped for a minute, looked at my fanta, and then accused it of witchcraft
Open AI has an ex-military intelligence lead on their board of directors. I wouldn't touch it at all. It's bait, and a brilliant way to automatically collect data on millions. Chat GPT being incorrect, not running peak performance, constant outputs of rambling and a lot of "force fed facts" keep it from becoming too useful to the public. The main issue is that people have been mesmerized by a product that will never deliver like they imagine it to, not in the public sector, and not without cost. Any technology capable of that level of functionality will ALWAYS be controlled and available to a select few. Whether that means political, military, corporate, big money, I couldn't say. But I can guarantee what it does do flawlessly is collect your data.
Every so often I fire up ChatGPT knowing I am going to have to tell it 'I don't see [put anything here]' and it then says 'I'm sorry, that was from some obtusely outdated information and I don't know why I was obtuse enough to spit it out. Let me find some current and/or correct info for you' in not so many words.
@@catmastertrash369 every single AI or ML company is collecting data on you. Almost certainly in a more competent manner than some ex MI guy who probably barely knows about AI/ML models
the consistent quality of this channel is insane, i dont think ive ever not enjoyed an episode and to do that on a weekly basis is just mind baffling to me
As an oji-cree born and raised in algonquin territory following algonquin teachings, thank you for finally actually talking about what wendigos actually are, I'm so sick of people not doing the proper research and just thinking they're the exact same as skin walkers
As an average dude raised in rural West Virginia, that upsets me as well lol. I've always been huge on folk-lore and the occult, and the way they've been popularized by media is unfaithful to the origins of both creatures. I don't feel like the bastardization mish-mash by pop culture has done any justice to the fact that they both have their own identities, or how terrifying either creature can be on their own. Also, I have a question if you'd be willing to answer. As I said earlier I am very into folk-lore. I was wondering if you knew any stories, or folk-lore about Skin walkers specifically? I know a fair bit about them as far as the origins go, but I was curious as to distinct identifying things that would separate them from a Wendigo or other creature of the night in folk-lore, stories, etc. as I've never really had a chance to ask someone with firsthand knowledge.
@spencthe0ut5yd3r thank you ! (Personally) the differences I know is skin walkers are medicine peoples that used dark ritual to wear the skin of animals and use their voices, while wendigo are people that have been taken by a dark spirit because they've eaten human flesh (a lot of stories are specific in area.) Skin walkers aren't my expertise you could say I'm more just interested in them, I'm sorry I can't be of more help in this category lol
@@jaredfortin6810 All good, I still appreciate your time. Every little bit helps. For instance I didn't know Skin Walkers were medicine people specifically, so thank you so much!
@danwolf307 it doesn't bother me I just didn't want to be the weird guy like "You're pronouncing everything wrong" lol, you're right though it's Al-gon-kwin
I mean, you joke, but Missing Enigma believes that some form of accident with a knife either whittling or shaving and him stumbling out in an attempt to take care of himself is the best mundane explanation. And I agree. It's the best one I can think of. Short of that... things get whiggy
Aiden reading Native American words: "I'm doing my best, if anyone knows the actual indigenous pronunciation PLEASE correct me." Aiden reading French words: "I'm not even gonna try, frick the whole French language." I like your priorities, lol
I think if you are panicking while bleeding out, no action seems that weird. Especially with how quickly someone can bleed out, he might not have realized how little time he had. It also doesn't seem weird that he would shave while laying down.. people get comfortable with repetitive actions easily. I think him nicking his artery while shaving, getting out, panicking while ripping up some cloth and bleeding out before he could get the bleeding to stop, makes way more sense than an insatiable monster.
Plus the insatiable monster has the same issue with literally all the other animal attack theories especially if he was attacked in the tent as the blood would suggest
I'm inclined to agree with OP. As for why are there three rounds missing from the magazine, I think it's most likely he just never filled the magazine. Explains why they couldn't find casings - there were never any there to begin with.
That's what I was thinking too. You can't really try to apply logic to the actions of a person who thinks they're going to die, and is desperately trying to do anything to save themselves. Rationality kinda goes out the window at that point.
You aren't going to nick an artery shaving...too deep in tissue. More like possibly the Jugular vein...even that may be a bit difficult unless using a straight razor.
@@greasygod93 In my home state (Michigan) it seems everyone is under the Anishinaabe umbrella but me.😆I've got everything else in my mutt bloodline though. When I was very small (70s) my mother and I lived in a log cabin in the woods outside Houghton Lake. There was someone there (neighbor?) who loved to teach me about local Indigenous history and all about the surrounding wildlife. He always had plums for me. When I started school I was so disappointed that what I had been learning wasn't a subject they taught. Now that I think of it I'm probably lucky I didn't get kidnapped.😅But honestly I think he just had a thing for my mom. The interest has never left me though. Sorry for the book.
@@Johnconno no one chooses to be vulnerable I suppose but people certainly make choices that lead them to be desperate and vulnerable…that’s what these stories tell of ..cautionary tales
Awesome analysis. Having watched someone bleed out (ICU nurse and PRN to the ED), don’t underestimate the panic he must have felt when he realized how badly he was bleeding and how far from help he was if he’d nicked a carotid. It’s a full sensory experience - you hear it spraying on the tent in this case, see a river of blood, and the smell fills your nose. He would have been acutely aware he was dying. If it was “human attack,” the bad guys would have taken the cash, the pistol, etc. If it was Wendigo, there would have been sign - like him smelling it, thinking it was a bear-wendigo or bear, I am not hiding in a hammock. I would have expected his body to have been found toward the lake. Blood all over but maybe no body, gun certainly unholstered and not on safety. Sometimes terrified humans run toward water when no other shelter is present. He would have ran from it, cut thru the side of his tent if it came in thru the tent opening, etc. Regardless, this man died a terrifying death. Poor soul.
Agree, I hope it was at least quick. Bear (are there bears in the area of his death?) aren’t quick, either are most predators not named cougar.

If it was a happenstance robbery (and was only supposed to be a robbery) gone bad and the person doing it realized they fatally wounded him, it makes total sense they'd leave everything and just go. If they only meant to rob him and the robbery turned into a killing, the robbery is forgotten about as they want nothing to attach them to what just happened. They get tf out of there. He sounded like a guy who wouldn't just hand over his stuff.
On a previous video, someone suggested it could have been a medical emergency, like bleeding esophageal varices. If he's suddenly coughing/throwing up blood, that could still cause him to panic and scramble out of the tent
@@marandadavis9412 very true. I’ve seen the blood hit the wall at the end of the bed from those (projectile vomiting). It would have looked like a slaughter house. Whatever got him, 2 footed or 4, he had a horrifying last few minutes on earth.
True-if they thought he was away from camp and they were startled by him coming up out of the hammock….good point. If they shot him somewhere in a way it didn’t hit bone (but maybe took out ascending abdominal aorta) or the impact of bullet hitting bone was destroyed later by animals, his skeleton wouldn’t tell us.
Not only serial killers but the descriptions of the "monsters", we all have to remember centuries ago glasses weren't invented and poor eyesight could be a validation of odd descriptions used
@@StephanieLondonI also wonder if the language at the time just didn’t have the words to describe what people saw. Kinda like how unicorns originate from Greek merchants going to Africa, seeing rhinos and coming back and describing them as horned horses since they didn’t have a word for them.
Has anyone ever connected wendigo with things like prion disease? Because being off-putting and not seeming normal could definitely match up. I've seen deer with chronic wasting and they're horrifying. I imagine people with a similar condition would be the same, and prion diseases come primarily (maybe exclusively) from consuming brain tissue from your own species.
Brain tissue of any kind, not just of the same species,is just one of possible way of transmission, if the brain is of animal/human who already have prion disease. More common is contracting it from animals through eating their meat (infamous disease of crazy cows or whatever is the english name), but we don't really have much new cases thanks to very strict food regulations in regards of meat.
@@griffith5704 deer are a species that get a prion disease. They look like the deer equivalent of a wentiko; falling apart into shreds. If a human eats an infected animal, or if they eat another human (especially any nervous tissue) they can get a similar disease. A wentiko was a human who eats other humans & is described like a deer with chronic wasting disease minus the deer part. The comment was just using an example, not trying to draw a legitimate connection.
Just wanna say that the effort put in to these vids are evident. This is one of the best mystey/storytelling channels out there. The fact that you stay pretty skeptical and just use common sense is appriciated.
I would love a side channel where you guys just go full depth true history and origins of most known myth legends and monsters. Cause like, the reality that the Wendigo is a metaphor for what befalls those who succumb to greed or general gluttony and vice is awesome. ❤
I'm curious why people are so confident about the "all his knives are accounted for" bit. As a bit of a knife aficionado myself, knives are much cheaper and quicker to get than guns. Jordan also doesn't sound like the type to Tweet out every time he buys a new knife. I feel like it's entirely possible he had a newer knife that his family didn't know about that probably just got lost in the wilderness. As for the not shaving at the lake, who says he didn't? What if he got back, lay in his hammock for a nap, realized he missed a spot, and rather then get up again right after getting comfortable and going all the way back, he thought to just get it real quick there in the hammock? With all the soft tissue gone by the time they found him, a lot of his exact physical state is just up for speculation. I also think he might have been bleeding for a while before he realized he was hurt. His mother mentioned that he kept his knives extremely sharp, and a clean cut can be damn near painless. I've had occasions where I've nicked myself cooking and not noticed at all till I saw the blood. Now, I've never nicked my carotid, but I can see it being entirely possible Jordan didn't even realize he was hurt until he had a moment of "Wait, why am I wet? Oh shit, I'm bleeding!" He probably collapsed and died right outside the tent before he could even really do anything. The torn fabric was probably just from scavenging animals, rather than any attempt to make a bandage. I appreciate that you don't point to the supernatural unless you find something truly inexplicable, but I feel like this one is a lot less inexplicable than you think.
I had a similar thought about "the knives were all accounted for." I don't know I that I could account for all the knives _I personally own,_ much less my family. I also wonder if it wasn't an artery while shaving, but something else, like a thigh or torso wound maybe. I've dropped a heavy Jet Pilot Survival Knife on my foot before and instantly knew I was in trouble when it went right through my shoe. But I took care to sheath it and set it aside before I started pulling my shoe off to look at the wound. Looking at that nylon pistol sheath, it's possible he had a sharp knife in a cheap sheath that stabbed him in the thigh while sleeping or something, or he was holding a knife and tripped and fell on it. He realizes he's hurt, but doesn't know how seriously, so he takes time to prepare things before undressing (like cutting some clothes into strips). By the time he's ready to treat his wound, he's already too far gone.
Without going to the supernatural from time to time, would he have a chammel left? Like no, seriously, think about it, this is where he gets his money from, so ofc some slips "happen", and I am sure they happen purely by accident
Minnesota resident here! We don’t get much representation as a state so thank you!! Also, Ely is pronounced EE-LEE (makes no sense, I know. But a lot of MN place names make no sense either! 😂)
I don't know if cases like these are exactly the kind of representation people normally want. (What do you know, my state was mentioned in the case to... huh.)
Minnesota's biggest mystery and unexplainable event currently is The Vikings record....also unexplainable is how y'all got robbed on national TV last nite
You simply don't just put up a tarp and your hammock and think your winter base camp is done! You need a big stash of firewood, a designated cooking place, a lavatory (protected for wind and snow), a fire pit, clothes lines, a washing area, and you do not rely on a tarp as your primary shelter! A bigger lean-to or an isolated wicker shelter with a strong roof. As strong as you can stand on it.
Intel here: Many tactibros were under the impression that maxing out the magazine damages the compression spring. The rule of thumb was generally mag capacity minus three. So you'll see lots of guys pack AR or AK mags to 27 or 28 then chamber a round and safe it. I imagine the 15-3=12 makes sense. No casings checks out too. Chances are if there no evidence the gun was fired, it most likely was not.
A little bit of "neither here nor there" but it's always important to note that family members almost never say suicide was an option. Speaking as someone who has come shockingly close on numerous occasions throughout my life, I'm 100% certain my family would absolutely pull the "100% there's no way he would ever do that" card in the event I ever actually did it, as I've never told any of them about it. Don't worry, I'm not there right now and haven't been in quite some time. Just food for thought. You never know what's really going on in someone's brain.
My first thought was suicide followed by an opportunistic wild predator looking for food. I agree with your understanding of families unwilling to believe suicide was an option for their family member. Glad to read you have come through the difficulties in life to be here to write about it.
It's just psychology, sadly; if the family admits that suicide was a possibility, their guilt at not doing anything will eat them alive, not to mention the court of public opinion. It's absolutely true that you can't ever really know what's happening in someone's mind, no matter how close and loving you are.
@@melissaowens6031 that's why I said it's neither here nor there, at least for this particular case. Just saying I never buy the "his family said he would never do that" think
I've been living in the northwoods area my whole life (both wisconsin and minnesota) and the winters here are very intense, to go camping or backpacking in it you really need to be extremely prepared for it. When it gets down in the negatives especially at night, that is a type of cold that doesn't care how many layers you have on, its going down to the bones
People really didn't understand that until they experience it. I had a heavy goosedown parka that I got from the Cabela's in Rogers, MN, and it was to heavy for most conditions, but one night at -70 with 40mph winds, it wasn't nearly enough.
@thelorelodge Aidan Mathis cannot debate because he just doesn't have the type A personality nor the yet matured brain enough to be humble, willing to let others speak and finish their sentences even if he believes that he doesn't agree. He gets very snide and snooty when he believes that he's being personally attacked just because somebody attempts to bring a potential mistake he made into his attention. He takes that so personally which is such an important part of being historian that is having your peers review your work and then give you constructive criticism on things that they see as problematic or moot or bias etcetera. Or just incorrect. However when Aiden receives constructive criticism he turns into a big baby he "takes the ball and goes home"... so nobody else can play. That's the kind of child he was and that's the kind of very young adult he is. However I love the channel and love a lot of the work and Mysteries and I would absolutely love to see somebody like well anybody other than Thorne finger try to tell him these things because Thorn finger apparently can't even get through to him. Very sad very sad and the work lately has shown that there is some sort of Discord going on with the channel because we no longer get videos with a specific mystery that does a good Deep dive in literally going on location most of the time, the use of hand-drawn Mattis work. And photos. Also some more Gore would be great. Not an unreasonable amount of course. Just you know after about 30 minutes when they're no longer watching you could throw a real autopsy photo in here or there and chances are and nobody would see it or demonetize you but you won't. Also if you're going to put last entry point book as a part of the video you should probably include the author's name
An important thing to mention when talking ab old native legends is how many indigenous languages do not translate to English one to one. “Giant” may be derived from just a suffix in a massive word-sentence as many tongues are polysynthetic. The true meaning of that affix could be obscured, and could refer to spiritual size in the same type of confusion with the whole idea of Manitou. As a speaker of a few Indigenous languages, including Cree, I can see how the suffixing systems could confuse, especially when you’re dealing with the ever more complex Diné languages, or even that Salish and Wakashan languages, who are even more complex or different from English.
Talk about a ridiculously fun return to form with the Wendigo stories. "His aim was dead on". Been loving all the content lately, but very much enjoyed going back to ancient and historical legends here. History segments give me life.
Is it just me, or do you hate being about 45 minutes late to the premier and have to ask yourself if you should just wait until it's over to watch from the beginning, or try and watch from the middle and not understand what the hell is happening?
And even worse is (and I don't know if it's just my phone) when the premiere is over, the video turns dark and you can only hear the audio until you refresh the page and have to start over or try to find where you'd come to! 😔
Regardless of whatever actually happened, as someone who has lived in Minnesota my entire life, hearing "New Mexico native wanted to camp out in Northern MN for the winter" already made alarm bells go off in my head. Not that it's impossible, but man, if you haven't ever really experienced the levels of cold it can reach here then I would definitely not recommend trying to camp out in it, especially with how long winters can go sometimes.
Someone who uses " for all intents and purposes" Instead of " for all intensive purposes"? Finally, someone who actually knows the correct way to use that saying.
Most people say it the correct way. The older I got the more I understood this. When I was a young man I was primarily surrounded with young men. When I was a middle-aged man I was primarily surrounded with middle-aged people
I'm from Sault Ste. Marie, and you pronounced it the way people from here do! It's a majority English speaking city, so we don't say it with a French accent. And we pronounce Goulais "Ghoul-ee." Awesome video, as always, Aidan! :)
Brilliant 👏 I so enjoyed this episode tonight! The perfect blend of lore, modern mystery, and history told by a masterful researcher and storyteller. As always: your dry humor is much appreciated.
now that you mention it. the idea that wendigo might just be serial killers actually checks out. even more so when you realize that Canada has A LOT of cases of cannibalism. never really put the two of them together until now, but it kinda checks, doubly so given the areas they were located in.
I would like to know exactly how many people, in recorded history, have actually fatally cut their own throat while shaving. I don’t think it’s going to be a high number. The only way I can see something like that happening is if he was unexpectedly jolted at just the wrong time. The carotid is relatively near the surface in the throat, but if it was breached that wouldn’t be a “nick” it would be a serious cut. In addition to all the other reasons you mentioned that this isn’t a very likely scenario.
Ely is pronounced Eelie. If I remember correctly, this was the year we got to a -56°f windchill in Minneapolis. Winter in northern Minnesota is not to be fucked around with
And mpls isn’t Near as cold as Boundry Waters! BuT. It was October! Which normally, there’s no snow yet except for the very northern parts of MN. And I’m not sure how common Boundry Waters having snow is even typical, though that year, obviously there was, in fact 2-4 feet is a Lot! Edit: I had heard Oct twice, though I was distracted by several things while listening so I now realize that it was late winter when his campsite was found
Holy Cannoli how cool this video was. My heart goes out to Jordan's family and I deeply sympathize with his difficulties in life. He did not deserve anything that came his way in that camp. I loved the native history and myths included. This channel is one of very few who actually give native angle in the US history. I am very intrigued and always perk up when you explore these stories. Much love from Poland
Just want to say I really really appreciate the little history lessons you do before getting into the main story! I always sit through them and they are very informative :)
I really do enjoy when you include native American history in the videos, i'm European and we basically never learn anything about American history that's from before the Mayflower arrived (or roughly around that time) so it's definitely appreciated! Many thanks!
There are times when I find myself longing for the more conspiratorial videos of the past. But then I absolutely snap myself out of it because your research is amazing
I like the idea that for most animals humans are basically cryptids. Most animals rarely see humans, we walk on 2 legs always, have almost no hair, smell weird, are usually noisy, and as far as an animal is concerned can kill you from a distance with a loud noise
“Unprepared for the elements” would be much more convincing if he’d been there longer than a day or two before meeting his end, and if there wasn’t a quantity of blood in the tent. SOMETHING killed him, and whatever it was appears to have taken him by surprise as he lay in his hammock.
Mattis just made one of the best sponsor transitions yet, by throwing Magic Spoon as a possible solution to the Wendigo's hunger. Why, we all know WendigOON is crazy for Magic Spoon. Why can't his cousin, the wendigo, enjoy it too? ✨
So glad I found your channel dude, I absolutely love and appreciate how much detail you go into and how honest you are when you aren’t sure about something. Great vibe!! Especially love all the historical stuff and the long intros about the history of the region and those types of things, really cool haha thank you :)
Hannibal was one of the best television shows I've ever seen. It was heavy, original and didn't insult the viewer's intelligence. You actually felt like you *went somewhere* when you watched it; finishing an episode felt like coming back from a journey. The show never stood a chance with attributes like that (which is why no one watches cable anymore). Also I'll never forget the "artwork" of Hannibal. Mads Mikkelson was the only actor with the complex emotional discipline to play Hannibal.
I grew up in northern Minnesota on the Iron Range. We weren't the most rural, our road was paved, but nearest neighbors were 1/4 mile (1/2 km). We had a black bear come to our back door when we baked one summer, a cougar on our property screaming like a woman one bitter cold winter, and even saw moose and wolves a few times going to our cabin (which of course was even further north). The cold, snow, and wind are unfathomable unless you've experienced it. It's always shocking to me that native people could survive and thrive without electricity. And yes, I came to the comments to also say it's pronounced EE-lee. 😅
I don’t know what about this episode was different but this one felt like a return to form after the super cluster focus. This felt like classic lore lodge and I love it.
I'm going through a very tough time right now and I'm so thankful for finding this channel. Randomly clicked on it and idk what it is, but I can finally be invested enough in something to blur out some other things. You're doing great work man, keep it up
I finally bought a fume journey pack and immediately after and ever since i get non stop fum ads i never have seen. Should be here on Wednesday. I hope it lives up to the hype because I need to quit smoking tobacco bad. Thanks for the coupon code.
First off, God rest Jordan Griders soul, I pray he found peace. I'm sorry for him and his family. Secondly, thank you for another great video Aidens! At last: I don't think its at all mysterious what happened, it seems pretty clear it was wolves. Wolves in the Boundary Waters wouldn't be nearly as familiar with humans, nor as fearful of them, given that they wouldn't have had much contact with them. 1 million square acres of land (just on the US side, but I'm willing to bet there's much more space on the Canadian side), is plenty of land for wolf packs to roam and never run into humans, especially given that Native Americans no longer inhabit the land the way they used to. As humans we don't really wander the way we used to anymore and we've pretty well lost our respect and fear of nature and we forget that wolves are actually nightmare death machines that have probably killed more people than anything else other than wars and sickness throughout our history. And part of the source of my opinion for this is that I've lived in Bayfield County Wisconsin and there are wolf packs on the ice and in the woods during the winter and they frequently roam through the edges of the communities of the area. And Bayfield County is WAY more populated than the Boundary Waters. I think that Jordan arrived at his campsite earlier in October and picked his campsite, on the way he picked a few odds and ends in gas stations and small shops till he arrived. That night he probably stayed in his truck since he wouldn't have had much time to set up camp since, while he wasn't familiar with Northern winter camping, he was certainly smart/experienced enough to know he was out of his depth. This is the day he sends the last of the pictures. The next day he gets up and begins setting up camp, at first probably intending just to have a temporary shelter or something rudimentary that he can improve on long term as he inhabits the camp. That's why there's only a makeshift tent/lean-to with a hammock and not exactly suited to long term cold weather camping. In this time he thinks or finds out or thinks that he doesn't have enough or the correct supplies. So he heads back into Ely (Eel-ee) and picks things up, then returns to camp. Now, October is the fall and not winter, so while it might snow up there that time of year, its not quite cold enough for it to stick around much, but definitely cold enough for critters to be starting to den up or try to get in those last calorie stores before snow sets in hard. And its definitely cold enough for someone that has only experienced arid New Mexican night time cold (and I've lived in Arizona I know the desert gets damned cold at night, its just not the same as a humid northern cold), to underestimate and afflict themselves with hypothermia. Especially if he hadn't cut enough firewood to last him through a night, let alone multiple nights. Jordan has also camped within easy walking distance of a beaver pond, which usually contain beaver, which would be a good source of late season calories for a ranging wolfpack. So, Jordan returns to camp and begins getting ready for the night. Starting a fire and making a meal, but he hasn't really had time to truly settle in or make firewood to help keep him warm through the night so ultimately he's unprepared for the night. Probably he falls asleep while the fire is still burning, so he's still relatively warm and feels safe. He might have known there were wolves around, and might have even heard them in the distance, but might not have been aware that they would be quiet nearby and its very common for a pack to range far apart. Just cause you hear howling miles off, doesn't mean that one isn't just a few yards away. But he keeps his pistol close but is relatively unperturbed since he has his fire. But it goes out and, I think crucially, he doesn't wake up to re-light it. He grows cold and in his sleep he begins to at least become sluggish and lethargic with the cold, if not precisely hypothermic. And then it goes like this: the wolves gather round after the fire goes out. They test the camp, maybe by pacing around or through it, because they still are mostly opportunistic. If Jordan had been awake or awoken and been able to put up a credible threat display or shoot one, he probably would have been fine. But he stays asleep, his fire is out, and he doesn't react. So the wolves move in. They attack him while he sleeps, no matter how he's sleeping his neck is vulnerable which is where wolves target most, take him by the throat, pulling him out of the hammock and dragging him out of the tent. The blood comes from the initial neck wound spraying across the interior before Jordan is dragged away. The rest proceeds as you might imagine. He might awaken, but if he does its too sudden and he's too cold to really be able to fight back and his fate is sealed. Just my theory, but it seems to fit everything presented and be a lot more simple. Though I do greatly appreciate all the extra wendigo lore in this video. It is one of my favorite Native American legends, and I really appreciate your (the Aidens') acknowledgement that as its originally described is more of a spiritual affliction/transformation, than a physical entity. Thank all ya'll!
And the bandage strips may have been unrelated and a stock treating a small wound, perhaps a cut from cutting firewood that is flayed open, and thus soaking bandages regularly. Now that he's been scavanged and decomposed, we would find no evidence of this, and in fact at first only found blood. Maybe the scent of such a wound alerted the wolves to a wounded meal. 😢 I myself just recently tripped and tried to rip off my toenail, creating a cut that was bleeding freely for a few days and was unsuturable as it was the cuticle of the nail, and at first I had to change the dressing every few hours even with proper bandages. I had actual bandages to cut into strips, but I cut strips every time I settled in to put my foot up or go to sleep and set up my supplies. Being that it was his first night, that may have been the last thing he did before bed.
The only mishap I'd have with this is, the struggle from the wolves dragging him out of the hammock likey would have torn it down, or atleast the tent surrounding him, plus isn't more likely for him to have been eaten almost on the spot? Also not including the severe lack of damaged items in his campsite that would allude to a wolf attack
I'm from The Balkans in Europe and I grew up in sixties and seventies with wolves and bears around. There has NEVER EVER been a single documented wolf attack let alone killing of humans by wolves (or bears) in my country since the ww2,ca 70 years now. Local children from my village went to basic school 4 miles away through thick wooded area on foot in a single group of 10-20 for decades without a single incident with wolves or bears. Wolves killed our sheep and we would regulary chase them away from the village with dogs and rifles. Both they and bears run away from humans and as I said before have never attacked a human being in my country. They can be dangerous if you're alone, scared, weak or wounded and obviously unable to defend yourself (drunk, asleep, unconscious) and if they are very hungry. If you can yell, make fast movement, throw a rock, shoot, run fast towards them they'll run away even when in big group. They fear humans but we've been hunting them for centuries here so they know that we humans are the top predator. So no,wolves are not "dangerous killing machines" when it comes to humans. Deers, bison, maybe, but not humans. Cheers. Milan from former Yugoslavia
Having grown up in Northern MI where Ojibwe and Odawa folklore are considered important parts of our history, the beginning of this video feels like sitting around a local bonfire. As always, the history lessons are a fav! You should look at the legend of the Michigan Dogman if you ever want a more lighthearted topic.
It’s possible that the strips of cloth were not bandages. Jordan might have cut them for another purpose (to tie or secure something) which means they would have been created & set aside before he shaved. That would explain why there was no blood on them. As for the other stuff being in odd places - well, most men are hardly organized when camping. They just lay things down higgly piggly as they unpack or finish using them. As long as everything stays within the camp site most men don’t worry about it. I think he cut the strips of cloth to use as ties & just set them down until he needed them. He was probably sitting up in his hammock as he was shaving & cut himself when the knife slipped. He probably applied pressure with his blanket or a piece of clothing but soon started to feel weak & light headed so he laid down. He lost consciousness & when that happened he could no longer apply pressure to the wound & soon bled out. The smell of blood attracted animals who scavenged & scattered his remains.
I honestly agree, expecting everyone to keep their area well tidy by someone else’s standards when it is just them using it is a bit absurd to always suspect. I would find it more telling if the family found it odd (but again more than 6 months since he died so who knows how much of the camp was changed due to the elements and wildlife
As someone from NM who goes to college in IA right now, the winters here (midwest) are 800x worse than back home and I would die if I tried to camp during the winter here. Also my house is in the drone shot 11:40, thats pretty cool
Right? A lot of people don't understand that winter in the far north is actively trying to kill you at every moment, and one little mistake can spell your doom. In 2009, I came upon a wreck on interstate 29 in Iowa during a blizzard, and the state trooper told me that one truck had rolled over and crushed a car, one had jackknifed, and two cars had crashed off the road. The only people who died from their injuries were the ones who were crushed in their car, and everyone else had frozen to death before the state trooper got there. It was -70 with high winds, and my heavy down parka was barely sufficient.
Most monsters are myths that carry a warning, or warnings. I'm almost positive that, Werewolves for example, are warnings about Rabies, Psychosis, and possibly Psychoactive Drugs.
Trolls are another good example, now that I think of it. Don't cross that bridge, there's a troll underneath that'll eat you. Don't go in that cave, a troll will eat you. Stay out of those woods, there's a troll in there. Warnings, to stay away from dangerous places.
I just got a job up in International Falls, MN, hearing these town names is so interesting. I’ve camped the boundary waters a few times. Hope you can cover my case if I go missing🙏
Only part way through so apologues if this gets covered but theory: Mountain Lion attacks outside tent, shreds clothing in attack. Jordan pulls gun holster off to get gun out, spare magazine and holster fall down. Fires gun up to 3 times, which halts the attack (doesn't necessarily hit animal), Jordan runs inside tent with gun and gets onto hammock as this is a more defensive position or in panic feels safer. Mountain lion doesn't follow so after a minute he puts safety on (and drops gun now or...). Attack has caused bleeding of major blood vessels in/around head (normal attack area for a cat). Hence blood spray inside tent and onto hammock. Then either he loses consciousness on hammock or feels weak and starts to wander out from tent in search of help, because of disorientation from blood loss (...dropping gun in hammock in either case - if not already put down). Animals (cat returns and wolves scavenge later, or wolves find him) either find his body outside and scavenge, or retrieve body from tent (not an active fight back, so would be less/no damage to tent). My current theory anyway, I did check and there are Mountain Lions in Minnesota, though I believe from my 2 second Google search, they may be more transient (though this could make them more likely to attack if they don't have solid hunting areas/ known food supplies). Just to add that since the Mountain Lion is uncommon in the area, the local professionals would likely not consider it, and may not be used to seeing the signs of an attack from one.
The safety on destroys this theory. Nobody is putting the safety back on after an animal attack even if the animal is seemingly gone. The theory that the gun was never fully loaded in the first place makes more sense. Accidental throat cut with knife while shaving does make sense as that's incredibly dumb to shave with an extremely sharp knife but I tend to go with that he slit his own wrists. Makes me wonder if that was a common habit his family either doesn't know about or isn't saying, given the pre cut bandages...but this time he decided to do it for real. Solo camping in this type of weather in this location already speaks to quite a bit of su*cidal ideation (even if only a more subconscious one). Every other human in his life highly advising him to wait till spring yet stubbornly deciding to go in winter speaks to this. The poor guy was never properly educated, had no job, and was pretty much homeless. Not a stretch to think he did this to himself particuarly in such a desolate landscape.
Gosh, by the time you finished the historical wendigo stories I had completely forgotten we were supposed to be talking about Jordan Grider! It was all very interesting and entertaining, thank you!

Hey @TheLoreLodge, Minnesota resident here. The town of Ely is typically said as EE-lee. I have family in the area and have been up to the area dozens of times growing up as an adult. Beautiful but definitely can be a remote area
The large amount of pooled blood in the hammock and spatter on the tarp points to a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Could have been unintentional or intentional. A casing could have easily fallen into the folds of his clothes and would have been dragged away whenever scavengers came and retrieved his body.
No, Aiden. I'm so proud of you! You said it so right, I had to rewind to see why you were saying what you said about French (good one, by the way). You pronounced Sault Marie perfectly! I am 61 years old, born and raised in Michigan. I know we Michiganders have our own unique way of pronouncing words, thanks to the French and native American influence, I'm sure. We have places with exact same or very similiar spellings as those in states right next to us, yet we have a different way of pronouncing them.
Love the latest video. Looking into these things has always intrigued me. Just one thing that I feel you got wrong. As a soldier stationed in Northern NY I can tell you it gets insanely cold there. I think the worst I've been out in was -40 but -20 with multiple feet of snow a day is normal up there. Other than that keep up the great work. Looking forward to the next episode.
possibly the most diabolical sponsor drop I have witnessed recently, great video lol. I had just seen Missing Enigma's video recently and thought this was a really interesting case. Boundary waters is such a beautiful area. It would also definitely be a great place for something to hide.
Man, I couldn't imagine using a camp like that during the winter of 2018-2019. Im from northern Wisconsin which is quite a bit farther south that the boundary waters and we had a hard winter that year. Cant imagine how bad it was up there.
I noticed that many of the events where animal attacks are possible, TH-cam in general only talks about wolves and bears. No one ever mentions mountain lions. They are deadly and can be more aggressive than bears or wolves.
I'm glad I found someone who explained the windigo I was confused when I saw it with antlers. That's not the windigo that I remember. I remember it how you described it.
From what I see his food was found with his site and very basic. Wallet, gun, and truck all undisturbed which such a desperate person could have used to get more food.
Lore have mercy! I learned a lot about Wendigos with this episode: • Wendigos don't have the deer skull head-horror thing goin on, that's something else • Most look like cracked out humanids • Giant Wendigos might be regular Wendigos, maybe you just want attention • Wendigos are already in a relationship, it's complicated • Are not very exciting to storytellers • Got the bad skin • Flares beats paper • Flaming spear to hind quarters if you got that rizz
Im obsessed / terrified with the theory is its Human Chronic Wasting Disease, and that, although it would be incredibly rare, it made the jump from deer / cervids to humans long, long before now. Explaining any US Forest Service cover up sort of makes sense: public hysteria and the huge loss to the hunting / general economy, before you mention game populations subsequently breeding out of control exacerbating the disease issue. Plus its a direct contact contagion that you can't even kill by cooking at +800F💀Considering the known symptoms of CWD, and the fact it would affect humans (carnivores) behaviour very differently to deer (herbivores) - weight loss, decreased interactions with other animals, tremors, repetitive walking in set patterns, loss of fear, confusion - you could easily make the case that CWD could cause cannibalism and extreme aggression in Humans. Perhaps a HumanCWD sufferer seeks isolation/caves as they near death, a very common primal response.
Very good episode! The Lore Lodge and Missingenigma work well together. Thank you for more in-depth explanation of that history of the supernatural regarding the missing case. I believe the young man was murdered by a crazy person living in the woods or a person so far gone to have become feral. Either way, they aye what they wanted and natural predation did the rest. RIP, young man.
Could he have been under the influence? Had he taken some substance, the shaving theory becomes more likely, as a delusional state of mind could say he cleaned and put away the knife while bleeding or had tried a new knife he had purchased and wanted to try that was never recovered. Then, he could have been consumed by wolves. Love the content , keep it up! Edit: It would also make more sense for him to shave in the tent as opposed to the lake
30:07 I do. When I have been in the woods with a handgun, I often carry a spare mag in a random pocket. He may have taken the gun out while resting in the hammock for easy reach or comfort, but not the smaller mag.
The story about the man drinking the powder given to him then making him (feel like?) he was taller and bigger and faster and then turning around and eating people reminds me of the bathsalts or pcp inducing sudden cannibalistic outbursts. No idea but just found the connection eerie enough to comment.
9mm is a biotch to load into magazines especially double stack with a single feed. The more you add the tighter the spring compression. It's also a predominantly metal firearm and it was a very cold place, my fingers are burning just thinking about that. He likely decided that if he couldn't get it done with a dozen then he was toast anyway. There's also an old school of thought that doing so can wear out magazine springs. However this is something that would take a very long time to accomplish. Your main concern is that It can lead to corrosion issues in a damp environment but this can be avoided with regular cleaning and oiling. He may have done what do many believers in the spring theory do, load a few less to keep the spring tension down.
I actually have a slight twist on the “shaving accident” theory. Esophageal varisces. Usually as a result of severe untreated acid reflux or a heavy drinking habit, the esophageal wall erodes away into one or more arteries. When they finally burst, the victim is left bleeding out and vomiting blood uncontrollably until they pass out and die from blood loss or suffocate on their own blood. It can be very spontaneous and VERY panic inducing. It wouldn’t be unreasonable to leave the tent flailing in a panic, trying to figure out what to do, grabbing random shit and bleeding all over everything before falling into the snow and dying. As for the cut fabric? Well, who’s to say he didn’t just finish cutting it before whatever happened and put the knife away?

@spencthe0ut5yd3r thank you !
(Personally) the differences I know is skin walkers are medicine peoples that used dark ritual to wear the skin of animals and use their voices, while wendigo are people that have been taken by a dark spirit because they've eaten human flesh (a lot of stories are specific in area.) I think if you are panicking while bleeding out, no action seems that weird.
Moose not shaving. Maybe an elk.

Misheard the opening as “Look, I’m not saying it was Wendigoon…but-“ and I fully accepted that you might have said this for a good five seconds.

No, you don't.
It's just psychology, sadly; if the family admits that suicide was a possibility, their guilt at not doing anything will eat them alive, not to mention the court of public opinion. It's absolutely true that you can't ever really know what's happening in someone's mind, no matter how close and loving you are.
I hear that. However, there was no gun shot hole in his pillow, on the beanie, in the tent or on hammock, etc.
I now need to see Missing Enigma and Aiden debate whether this was a Wendigo or Sasquach
I would definitely love to see them try to back up their arguments and positions with evidence 😂
@@ShireLeafI see all that pot you grow has not mellowed you out one bit. Did Aiden hurt you?
😂😂😂
I mentioned Joe Friedrichs by name as the author multiple times.
@TheLoreLodge this can only get worse the more you reply. Go Rogan and read less comments lol I can just see this getting bad
@wendigoon nervously smiling...
Nah, he was just wendigooning
I instantly thought, nooo Isaiah wouldn't do that ... 😂
Wendigoon spends too much tome hating on Australians 😂

Talk about a ridiculously fun return to form with the Wendigo stories. "His aim was dead on". Been loving all the content lately, but very much enjoyed going back to ancient and historical legends here. History segments give me life.
Is it just me, or do you hate being about 45 minutes late to the premier and have to ask yourself if you should just wait until it's over to watch from the beginning, or try and watch from the middle and not understand what the hell is happening?
You can always rewind to the start.
Right? I hate hearing it said wrong and with so much confidence lol.
Most people say it the correct way. The older I got the more I understood this. When I was a young man I was primarily surrounded with young men. When I was a middle-aged man I was primarily surrounded with middle-aged people

Brilliant 👏 I so enjoyed this episode tonight! The perfect blend of lore, modern mystery, and history told by a masterful researcher and storyteller. As always: your dry humor is much appreciated.
Oooh, this was a really good one. The weaving of the Wendigo mythology into the circumstances of the disappearance was flawless.
now that you mention it. the idea that wendigo might just be serial killers actually checks out. even more so when you realize that Canada has A LOT of cases of cannibalism. never really put the two of them together until now, but it kinda checks, doubly so given the areas they were located in.
The Carotid is deeper than the Jugular
Also, wouldn't they find hair stubble in his hammock?? Even if it was just a few if he was shaving actively shaving in his hammock.
an excellent point I haven't seen brought up before
Ely is pronounced Eelie. If I remember correctly, this was the year we got to a -56°f windchill in Minneapolis. Winter in northern Minnesota is not to be fucked around with
That is the way it is pronounced in England. As in Ely Cathedral.🇺🇸
Edit: I had heard Oct twice, though I was distracted by several things while listening so I now realize that it was late winter when his campsite was found
@ I’ve been up there in May and it dipped below freezing at night. Can’t even imagine the dead of winter

That and Mindhunter. Why the hell did they have to get cancelled.
@@danieljavorsky699 Yes! Another amazing show.

I myself just recently tripped and tried to rip off my toenail, creating a cut that was bleeding freely for a few days and was unsuturable as it was the cuticle of the nail, and at first I had to change the dressing every few hours even with proper bandages.
Cheers.

Ive been binging your missing person case's videos and ive just fallen in love with the way you explain things.
It's just "cases", no apostrophe.
I found your channel a few weeks ago and I can't stop watching! I love your voice and how you call out corrupt government and cop!!!
6:30 Aidan Mattis is not the Wendigo, says Aidan Mattis unprompted.
I've always assumed the Wendigo was a myth that 1st nations made up to stop cannibalism.
It's a parable warning against the dangers of prion diseases, yeah.
It is interesting, it seems like their symbolism has been placed onto a living creature. Maybe the creature can't help embody the message kinda
.
Desperation, not necessarily cannibalism.
Having grown up in wildlife rescue/around mountain lions, this entire case sounds like a desperate cat to me, not a supernatural critter.
@@GrimmDelightsDice I'm glad someone agrees. I'm from the UK so only have secondhand knowledge (though fairly extensive) of cat attacks.
4:58 The three fires which I am a of is a ceremonial midewiwin lodge comprised of the Ojibway and our descendents, the Odawa and Potawatomi. There are other lodges, but the three fires a specifically comprised of these three tribes reestablished by my dad and six others after years of being lost due to boarding schools. But tell us, was it Wendigoon?
Hey @TheLoreLodge, Minnesota resident here. The town of Ely is typically said as EE-lee. I have family in the area and have been up to the area dozens of times growing up as an adult. Beautiful but definitely can be a remote area
The large amount of pooled blood in the hammock and spatter on the tarp points to a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Could have been unintentional or intentional. A casing could have easily fallen into the folds of his clothes and would have been dragged away whenever scavengers came and retrieved his body.
Excellent video! Just love the amount of work and detail you consistently put into your research
Don't recommend the cryptids Magic Spoon, if they stop attacking who would David vaguely blame every disappearance on?
Wow, I’m seeing it live.
OMG U 2?!?!?!
That.... was such a smooth ad transition. Hats off to your sir.
I shall be saying "I no longer have the hunger." Often after snacking or meals.
First time I've ever heard the Wendigo lifestyle described (accurately) as "high protein, no sugar, carb-conscious."
So excited to see a new video from you guys! Great research work as always!
I say he was probably murdered by a human, robbed of his food, and then wolves and other animals ate him. Very sad. I wish peace for his family 🕊
From what I see his food was found with his site and very basic. Wallet, gun, and truck all undisturbed which such a desperate person could have used to get more food.
Wow. Just an excellent orator. Deductive reasoning spot on. Well done.
Lore have mercy! I learned a lot about Wendigos with this episode:
• Wendigos don't have the deer skull head-horror thing goin on, that's something else
• Most look like cracked out humanids
• Giant Wendigos might be regular Wendigos, maybe you just want attention
• Wendigos are already in a relationship, it's complicated
• Are not very exciting to storytellers
• Got the bad skin
• Flares beats paper
• Flaming spear to hind quarters if you got that rizz
Thank you for this summary it made my day lol
I'm so glad someone agrees with me on Hannibal. that show was amazing and i wish it ran longer
He may have done what do many believers in the spring theory do, load a few less to keep the spring tension down.
shoutout to the missing enigma, great channel.
This is a great post! It moves along well. I really like the video/visuals. I am part Sioux/Wisconsin and Choctaw.
I've always assumed the Wendigo looks like a Llama wearing a hat.
And that his tummy has the rumblies that only faces can satisfy.
