    ATTN: It should be noted that this video was produced before launch, and that there is a non-motion control scheme available now in preferences for those that don't find this scheme a good fit.

    The Move controllers have potential in VR, if and when it comes... the dualshock is much easier despite some minor drawbacks. Overall, the controls could use some tweaking, for sure.

    • @LucidStew
      @LucidStew  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I agree. I plan to give the Moves another shot when VR is available. I've come to the conclusion that controls on the DS4 would actually work better with some button combinations disabled. In the video I talk about not touching the sticks with R2 pressed. If you remove the functionality completely, you lose nothing except confusion.

    First off good video it does explain how confusing the the controls are in dreams and I'm used to digital sculpting in zbrush I think media molecule needs to use the touchpad on the DS4 as a mouse type input use your thumb as a mouse to navigate like you would in zbrush zoom in zoom out can be done with one stick while rotation can be done on the other stick. The shoulder buttons can continue to access specific rotation and move functions and the motion controls can be used 4 Quick moves and some precision but I think they're onto something but he's just not refined enough dreams is amazing this is not a game this is actually a program something similar 2 what developers are sort of used to this is a excellent entry point for anyone looking to get into World building 3D sculpting and all sorts of other things I think media molecule made a hit

    • @LucidStew

      The touchpad in general is underutilized, and I think you're right that they could find a good use of it. I'm not sure why they havent. As far as I know, they've been working on a control scheme minus motion controls, so maybe that scheme uses the pad?

    Hey Lucid, Thanks for the great work as always. Wanted to ask, ~6 months later, do you still consider your recommendations in this video, like not using sticks when grabbing with R2, etc, to be best practices, or has your opinion changed, and if so, what is your current view please?

    • @LucidStew
      @LucidStew  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I would still avoid that. Personal opinion is that they should remove that functionality. It's redundant and confusing. Instead of whatever R2 + sticks does, I would use R1 + sticks or L2 + sticks in its place. What you dont see me do in this video that I would recommend is getting used to using R2 with your middle fingers, and R1 with your index. Doesnt relate to motion controls, but you'll find a lot instances where you'll want to lock the camera and rotate around a spot so you can see the other side of something without moving it. Another thing I don't show in this video is using motion controls with surface snap on. The two combined are a major, major sculpting and spraypainting tool, and one of things that make the motion controls very important.

      @@LucidStew Hey didn't even think you would see my comment, thanks for responding. I'll keep that in mind.

    • @LucidStew
      @LucidStew  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was thinking about this while doing some work today, and this is situational. If you're freely grabbing things that you don't want to move, you want to avoid R2. R2 is necessary for copying R2+L1, and if you want to move the copy before you complete it, you have to release L1 and hold R2. So you really NEED to use the stick with R@ for this, BUT, if you rotate the camera while doing that, you rotate the object, which is often undesireable for various reasons. For this reason, you want your index free to hold R1, which will lock the camera, like I was talking about in the other comment. So, can't say DONT use R2 and stick, because absolutely must sometimes

  • @GitM-hq5fh
    @GitM-hq5fh 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    We need more tutorials like this that break down smaller pieces of the dreams tools. You might consider having a few more objects in the scene so that we can tell how they are moving relative to each other. Other than that this video was very useful

    • @LucidStew
      @LucidStew  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think part of it is the general lack of documentation. You're never really sure if you know everything about a subject. Just learned tonight that double-tap on X in edit selects all sculpts.

    • @LucidStew
      @LucidStew  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      When you make the cylinder, make sure its sized so that each end is touching a grid dot. With the grid still on, make a donut sculpt, but bring the shape editor up first. The donut diamater is slightly smaller than the cylinder, but you can edit the donut to make them the same. If you're doing it with regular(1) grid snap, it will basically do it automatically when you touch it. I think this is due to a bug in the editor, but that's how I did it.

    • @MrMOGHammer
      @MrMOGHammer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @LucidStew
      @LucidStew  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you recenter on a level surface, leave it there, it still drifts, and that happens consistently, I'd guess there's an issue with the controller. Occasionally my imp will get so out of wack that only a restart of Dreams will fix it, but that's pretty unusual.

    • @LucidStew
      @LucidStew  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HumbertoHacked Just from talking about it over the past 2 years, it seems some people have a lot of trouble with it, and others have none, so it might be that tiny inconsistencies in controller manufacture might make a big difference. It may also matter how you hold it. Because of the way I have things set up, when I play I am sitting upright and I hold the controller down by my knees under a desk. This seems to cause me more trouble than when I used to have my PS4 in the living room and played it on a couch in a more traditional console gaming posture.

  • @ThomasGiles

    Hey, Stew!
    I think people suggesting turning imp sensitivity way down are intending to just have the imp be stuck to the middle of the screen and using the sticks to move around entirely, so they don't use the motion controls at all. Definitely not my thing, but it might help some people.
    So confused by that flipped camera halfway through XD
    That's weird about the yaw/roll thing. Didn't notice that before. I've now logged it on indreams.me. feedback.indreams.me/forums/917431-dreams-bugs/suggestions/37468243-l2-motion-controls-yaw-and-roll-don-t-match-the-co

    • @LucidStew
      @LucidStew  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I get why people suggest turning it off, essentially, but this is a wrong move because it completely handicaps sculpting. If someone learns that way and then never unlearns it, they've made sculpting and painting 20 times harder for themselves just because they refused to put a little effort in.

    I love media molecule but the controls are a piece of ****. Absolutely horrendous. Im looking for precision AND speed. I move my joystick, the imp and object moves away from me at the same time as it moves in 3dimentions. What. And the motion control is like an extra way to decrease the precision while moving the object while I'm trying to move it in other dimensions. If grid snap is the only option im going to go crazy turning it off an on off and on just for doing organic things and back to structure building. LBP had waaaay batter controls guys.

      @luxcyfer3271 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      AND when I move the imp around, from its center it has this big swing and I can't position without having to grab and object. I watched the creators of thr game use the actual wands and they were doing some weird stuff to move the objects around and imp and simultaneously like they were trying to use a mouse. I feel like im using a mouse too. What the heck is this.

    • @LucidStew
      @LucidStew  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, LBP wasnt a fully 3D editor, so it doesnt have to do as much with the same controller. The Move controllers have a different control scheme, so you use them differently, but to my knowledge there isnt anything the Moves can do that the DS4 can't. There are probably some things that are EASIER to do with the Moves, however I personally find the Moves to be NOT as good as the DS4 at some things as well. My only real complaint is imp drift, and you'd think they'd have that fixed by now.

And I know some people don't want to hear this, but I'm a motion controls advocate! I think the use of the gyro does ADD to the control scheme. However, I know(and its from experience) there IS a really frustrating learning curve before comfort with the gyro kicks in. I can fully appreciate people who dont want to deal it with it, but being on the other side I think I also understand the design decision to use that gyro in the control scheme. Jesus your argument in favor of the motion controls seemed pretty weak. Especially when you proceed to barely be able to paint the surface of the object. After messing around with the game it doesn't appear that you are even able to attach objects to other objects easily. There have been so many times I wish I could just select two things and combine them on the fly. Or I wish I could place flat textures on objects without having to finagle with the motion controls and zoom in very slow to align it perfectly. A "real" stamp function would have been really really nice.

    • @LucidStew
      @LucidStew  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wasn't surface snapped. You have to keep in mind I streamed this, so it's not like it was according to plan second-to-second. You can attach objects by grouping them and then dealing with the group. Surface snap will get you flat textures on surfaces. You can also turn the motion controls off now.

    Also... I must say that this is NOT A SANDBOX STYLE CREATIVE GAME. Anyone wanting to create just a large world that they can play around in similar to Disney Infinity, Minecreaft or Portal Knights... this is not for you. The videos for this "game" have been very misleading across the board. This is an artistic computer style program. Most of the creations you have been seeing are also made by professionals or Media Molecule people. Very misleading. I unfortunately do not see this game taking off at this point. Tedious, exhausting and not really for the average "gamer".

    • @LucidStew
      @LucidStew  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I dont agree with you there on it being misleading. I think very specifically they've promoted the simpler aspects of it, hence all the 10 minute and one hour build videos. If its not made by them, its very seldom made by a professional. The people in the community just have talent and are working hard. I know from Project Spark that people think they're going to use something like this to make a real game in a day, but no one ever told them its possible. And no one reasonable would think that 1 person COULD do the work of 50, and do it 500 times faster. The other thing is, you have to give Mm and the community time to make things that will make it easier for the "average gamer". Those don't happen overnight either. What is an average gamer anyway? Lots of people are creative and want to express themselves. It's like saying painting or musical instruments arent for the average gamer. I just watched someone on stream try to make a tire swing for a tree for 2 hours. Now you might focus on it taking so long, but what I saw is that even after 2 hours, she still wanted to spend more time on it to get it to look right.

      @@LucidStew well... agree to disagree I guess. They are promoting as a sandbox game. I have seen it. And it is not that. It should not even be promoted as a "game". Do not get me wrong, I think the possibilities are there, but releasing something akin to a computer style program and then having people who literally work in similar fields using it to make pictures and such and then saying "WOW... look what you can do in this game!"... is a bit misleading. I am only saying that people who buy this with the belief that it is a "game" are going to grow tired of it quickly. Just like anything else, I'll get better at that with time, so probably none of us who are doing that are great at it yet.
      I don't disagree about the controls, but I think there is also only so much you can do. I think if they can fix the motion controls and pair down the options a bit, they will function much better. I know people will not use it because it's frustrating or too difficult. You can say that about anything. We don't need everyone who buys the game to be Disarmed or BigSurf.
