You could also explore, for a next video, some cities from the interior of Portugal, like Guarda, Viseu, Covilhã… those are cheap cities to live and have a great quality of life. For example in Guarda or little cities nearby, you can find 2-3 bedroom apartamentos for 300€/month :)

  • @cesarneves

Hey Dave. Your list is mostly focused on touristic areas. Sure they might be the most appealling to people as you have all commodities nearby but they are also pricier. Most expats might be more interested on not so crowded places. I get it that people might be much more interested on living closer to the coast but that always comes with a price. And anywhere in Portugal is always less than 2h drive from the sea - which for many americans is like a trip to Walmart xD. It would also be interesting to show some other options that are hidden gems and might be a perfect fit for many expats with lower prices, safer and a much better overall quality of life.
I live in the center of Porto but was raised in the countryside so I know what`s the best and worse of being on a "big" city.
I recently visited for the first time a place I knew about but never got the chance to visit and oh boy, I`d move immediately, specially working remotely like I do (though my wife doesn`t) but I`m definitely considering it for a vacation house soon. It`s about 40m drive from the sea. With 150k you can get a 2 bedroom detached house and the best part of all, it`s right next to the most beautiful place in Portugal - Gerês Natural Park. This place is called Arcos de Valdevez but there are also other smaller cities that have everything you need, cost you less and will improve your life! ;)

Hey tudo bem? Boa sorte!

Appreciate the video, but the information appears inaccurate. Currently, 1 bedroom apartments in Aveiro on Idealista range between 800-2000€, with many near the higher end of that spectrum. I travelled in Portugal and found Tomar a good town to be, it had most necessities, supermarkets and good weekly farmers markets and a national park. Apart from this larger places like Leiria which have smaller outlaying villages, and Coimbra which also has a good bus service to outlaying villages. For more rural outlook Vale de Gato between Tomar (some towns in between) has 3 beautiful villages before it reaches the outskirts of Fatima, and here you can farm, making a small holding at a reasonable price without fear of forest fires, the forest is long distance away. For non drivers it also has a regular bus service passing through from Tomar to Fatima. This is just these areas and I have not explored further south.

Dave, love your videos and your take on Portugal! I was born here but lived in the States most of my life, until about 2 years ago. Getting used to the different culture and way things work takes some time - even if you speak Portuguese, but in the end, you take a walk through Obidos and it is all worth it :-) Incidentally, believe it or not, I almost bought the house you live in!!! the first video of your I saw I recognized those rafters, because when I visited it I remember saying it would make a great office. We referred to it as the Yellow House. But I had to wait another year or so before the move, so I ended up near Sao Martinho do Porto, about 20 minutes north. If you ever come up this way, let me know. Keep up the good work, you are providing a really balanced view of life in Portugal!

From one American Dave living in Portugal to another: how about Braganca? I live in Lisbon, but I'd like to move somewhere else. I've been hearing many good things about Braganca. What do you think...?

Just come! You'll be welcome. Here you can taste the best food of your life for almost nothing. You'll have the fresher air that you can find, amazing landscapes everywhere and if you like History, we're old as fuck.
Yet, don't expect to find the rural city with typical eldery people everywhere that everyone think Bragança is. We have a lot of African, American and Asian youngsters here, we have (certainly) the most mixed and heterogenic population in all country (yap, even considering Lisbon). So, come! Taste our food and the Capeverdian food, and know people from everywhere, since Timor, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Angola, Mozambique, China, Eritrea, Ukraine, Moldova, São Tomé and Principe and of course: from Brazil:D

I was born in Santarem, I found rents 600 to 800 euros to high for anyone working in Portugal. Great job on the videos.
My mother lives in Pombal and they have great restaurants close to almost all medium cities, ( Coimbra, Leiria , Figueira da foz., apartments not sure about prices
I will go more south . Love Algarve so I will try to be by Silves or something similar in the area. Maybe not so cold in the winter. Keep up my friend

I am considering living in Santarem or Braga because I am looking for a place with a very very cheap cost of living especially when it comes to house rent and buying foodstuff. Is it true that Santarem is too cool? What are the disadvantages of living in Santarem?
