  • Wall tie failure can be devastating to a property. In the most severe cases - as with this terraced house in Stoke-on-Trent - corroded wall ties can result in part of the house being rebuilt.
In the first part of this mini series - • Wall Tie Failure: Part... - John showed you how to spot wall tie failure and how the mortar between the layers of bricks had become so loose that it was possible to see daylight through the gaps.
In this video, John shows you how we've had to rebuild part of the rear wall of the property because of the wall tie failure. He also takes a closer look at what a severely perished wall tie looks like and explains how it gets to that point.
As the BIG Man crawls between the scaffold poles, he describes how cavity walls are now constructed using stainless steel wall ties, which are far less prone to rusting.
It's important to note that the house in the video is an older property. When this house was constructed, the old type of wall tie was used universally.
    Key parts of the video:
0:45 - John reveals the rear of the property (minus part of the wall)
1:15 - The BIG Man shows you what the old type of wall tie looks like
3:07 - John explains how and why wall ties rust
3:56 - John touches on Helefix Stitching which can sometimes be a solution to wall tie failure depending on the severity
4:28 - The BIG Man shows you what a stainless steel wall tie looks like
5:46 - John shows how the wall has bowed as a result of failing wall ties

Hi John. Who was the structural engineer you used in Stoke-on-Trent for this work? Could you recommend them?

Even when you fix that house, will the neighbours damage not threaten yours?

Hi there. Thanks for watching our video and for your question. It's a possibility that the neighbour's house will have an impact. Everything on the property we worked on, however, has been passed by a Structural Engineer and Building Control - so the property is covered should anything happen.

Hi @@ryansamanjoul5411 . Best to get it checked ASAP if you think you have wall tie failure. It can be very destructive.
