I employed a firm of so-called damp specialists to remove the old wall ties and replace them with stainless steel ties , then repoint the walls. I heard loud banging on the brickwork so I went outside to see how the job was going. The so-called damp specialists were smashing the bricks with a lump hammer, then letting the rubble fall into the cavity, I told them to stop and use an angle grinder to take the bricks out as they were loosening the surrounding bricks and blocking the cavity. They missed half of the rusty wall ties , then when trying to use a long drill to remove them just missed my head when their drill came through the living room wall. I ended up doing the job myself and I had to remove the bricks on the bottom to clean out the cavities, which were full of rubble. It's hard to find builders who are up to the job, there are too many firms called BODGE IT AND SCARPER operating these days. There are fewer people doing apprenticeships. Many do a 6-month course at a skill center and then call themselves tradesmen. TRADESMEN MY ARSE!

You shouldn’t just make an assumption from a very limited inspection as shown. One other reason for the fracturing of the mortar joints is likely due to the brickwork being repointed with Portland cement over a lime mix.

Patrick, with all due respect I did not make an assumption based on a very limited inspection. I'm not sure if you actually watched the video where I carried out an invasive investigation to support my initial diagnosis. As for your comment that the fracturing of the mortar joints is likely to be due to repointing with a and/cement mortar I am intrigued to hear a detailed explanation as to how you reach that conclusion. I look forward to being enlightened.

Hi Neil, this is great, thank you. What would you be recommending as a remedy to this? Will the old wall ties continue to rust and expend?

Hi Louise, it is a case of starting from scratch as the original ties will continue to corrode.

Hi Louis, the original wall ties need to be isolated or cropped as they will continue to expand resulting in widening of the bed joints.

Thanks great vid. Do you ever use a camera (boroscope) on these investigations???

I do but if there is cavity wall insulation a borescope is not much use so it comes down to a hammer and plugging chisel and a bit of elbow grease.

Wall ties have patterned cracks 9/10 and if you’re good then you’ll know just like this chap

Hi, which company would you recommend in Scotland to do wall ties? I live in Edinburgh and looking for a reliable contractor.

Too many people carrying out wall tie works that don’t even need doing.
Some people do it for a quick buck.
