  • Hey Everyone,
    Few people confused in the comments. I DID NOT FORGET THE WALL TIES, IT WAS ANOTHER GANG.
    Welcome back. So my gang took over this plot form a gang that had already left the site. We had a few things to sort out, damp trays missing, weep vents, wall ties… and blimey it had made me realise how hard it is getting these things in afterwards. Something that takes seconds to put in correctly can take hours to rectify if done wrong. Actually been a learning curve for me to make sure I always put things in the right place and don’t forget anything…I always do anyway ofcorse, but its always good to double check.
    So yeah this wasn’t our mistake but its gotta be fixed.
    Line blocks can be found here - ...

    To get reasonably good adhesion when laying mortar the surface has to be free of any loose bits and also free of dust. This means you should always clean the holes with a brush then clean them with water. The water will also prevent the new mortar from drying too quickly which reduces the risk of shrinkage and increases long term strength. This is similar advise to installing Helifix bars btw...🙂

    Could of saved yourself some time. And used Helical Remedial Wall Ties. Just as efficient in these situations

    Wouldn’t epoxy resin be better for the internal end of the ties as muck pushed in the hole probably not very strong .?

      It's held in with mortar normally what's the difference?

    • @redleather100
      @redleather100 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@eddjordan2399 because normally the tie would be put in with the bed of muck (mortar) which has the strength of the whole course of blocks. Not just a little hole drilled in and plugged with muck there’s no strength to it , just pop out like a cork in a bottle .
      Probably better off using a screw in tie with heavy duty wall plugs.

    To answer your question, yes you can have too many wall ties. A party wall (robust detail) will stipulate the amount to prevent sound travel

    The wall ties you use are not allowed in North America because to thin and won't hold up either wall if something happens. We use a corrugated galvanized brick tie which is 1 inch wide by 7 inches long. You can in your application tapcon to block if missed. Very nice workmanship by you.

I found a remedial brick tie company video etc, saying about stainless ties and about how they allow for movement etc. As I say I'm pretty handy with tools, I use to be an engineer and now do ceilings, partitions and sfs, anyway thanks for taking the time

    All you needed to do is stich drill around every 6th brick along the wall , fix 1 tie , put the brick back , that way your removing around 15 bricks instead of around 100 bricks

    • @sarahwood1693
      @sarahwood1693 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @mrdogger2010 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@sarahwood1693 it's actually nothing like toothing, your trying to teach a guy who has been bricklaying for 38 years how to suck eggs now 🤣
      A good price worker would never ever in a million years take 100 bricks down just to put a few ties in , but also , I should tell you that a building inspector will tear that to bits , you CAN NOT simply drill a hole and push a tie in , the cement around the tie is NOT gripping onto the tie and will move , the ONLY AND CORRECT way is to either drill and plug the holes with wall plugs and screw the tie ties into the plugs OR drill a hole , use a air blower to remove all dust , insert a tie and fill solid with 2 part Anchor resin

    • @sarahwood1693
      @sarahwood1693 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mrdogger2010 I’m not trying to teach you anything, i agree it’s shite . Screw in ties or helifix ties should be used. It is the same to toothing as in the mortar on top of the brick isn’t load bearing. It’s not compressed by the weight above. It’s exactly the same outcome. In your first reply you said to remove every sixth brick, then in your second reply you’ve addressed the fact that holding the ties in the block with mortar isn’t correct and then mentioned resin. Resin would work but pointless if ties aren’t attached to the blocks correctly. A good price bricklayer doesn’t forget multiple ties. Also ties do NOT go every 6th brick horizontally and a building inspector wouldn’t know it had been done. Never in a million years. You should know this with 38 years experience. I’ve got 35😃🤔
