What a blessing and precious memories. I turned a young 60 in June of last year (soon to be 61). When I was living in my home town in my late teens and early twenties, I was listening to the greatest country music ever. I had a crush on this ruggedly handsome man, too. LOL I have many of his CD's in my collection among other country greats. I've been in Atlanta for almost 30 years, and have a few co-workers who recognize the best of the best. For those who throw stones at Merle Haggard's mistakes, read his story on Wikipedia. He didn't have a perfect life, and furthermore, in 1972, he received an official pardon from future President Regan, who was then Governor of California and released from prison with all past crimes erased, some of which were not of his own individual involvement.
Many years ago I wouldnt listen to Merle Haggard because ,being a hippie of the 1960’s , I was offended by the lyrics to Okie from Muskogee. Fast forward 40 years- and thanks to TH-cam , I now realize just how remarkable a lyricist, guitar player, and singer he truly was. Everytime I hear this song, it brings tears to my eyes. And watching and listening to him over the years, I agree with one of the posters that he peaked in his later years. Approaching 70 myself, there is a wisdom and perspective that comes with age. Thats why I have grown to love Merle and much of country music which i scorned in my youth.

My husband says this is a sad song but it makes me feel good and smile every time I hear it. It takes me back to my childhood. My Daddy always listened to Merle💜
This man was one of the greatest singer/songwriters in this country. The real deal through and through. I still get choked up hearing his beautiful voice. Merle was very down to earth and never thought he was better than anyone else. A salt of the earth soul. May he be resting peacefully and watching over his loved ones ❤️🙏🎶🎤🎸🇺🇸
Our generation had the best of country music. This song still gives me goosebumps. We played this at my dad's funeral as we proceeded out it just seemed perfect . He was the reason I appreciated Merle, Hank,Waylon the Possum and so many others from that Era. It remains in my heart the best of country music for ever!!!! Whose gonna fill their shoes.
Just imagine no America just life without genuine country singers, sad n boring and most of all loneliness without the true meaning of life across the board. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Brings back so many memories of driving through the rocky mountains with boyfriend, my son and daughter, playing Merle Haggard in car on CDs. Now Merle, my son and my boyfriend are together in Heaven.
The words sing me back home are engraved into my dad's head stone, he taught himself to play the guitar by listening to you great generation of singing sensations
This is country music at its finest. I love this rendition of Merle's song He seems to have slowed the tempo down just a little. You get to hear all the great background music and it's just beautiful. And then you get to hear Merle do his guitar picking right at the right time. Just another one of his great songs!
Slowing the tempo gives this lovely song the pathos it deserves. I came to appreciate Merle relatively late, as I am more a folk and folk-rock fan. When I first heard him sing "Misery and Gin" I was shocked at the silkiness of his voice. He can sing ballads with the best - with Sinatra, Bennett, etc. This is my favorite, along with "Think About a Lullaby."
@ andyknowles558 .Your message is just so very true.absolutely love this beautiful song. Songs like this will be around a very long time. So special just beautiful. Love it.
There is no better way to lower your blood pressure than by listening to classic country artists like Merle or the ultra-soothing voice of Marty Robbins. I must have my daily dose of this drug.
and the lyrics are awful. A criminal is walking to death row, but he tries to find peace in his own death, right before he dies. I listened to Merle Haggard since the late sixties. He was one of a kind. When he was made they broke the mold. Truly a legend that can't be duplicated.
He’s always been my favorite and reading these accolades from his many fans attest to his greatness in the country music field and are so touching and deserving. His sons inherited his talent and are doing a great job keeping his music alive.
I am ashamed that I didn't really appreciate his music when he was with us. I have gotten much wiser with the years. He wrote from the heart, and his brand of "country" music resonates with the best of American folk tradition. This will be honored American music forever.
@@JamesSmith-wf1pd I have eclectic taste. I like all kinds of music, done well. I like classical, swing and jazz. I like pop standards and rock. I like folk music of many nationalities, not just American. But I do like country that isn't cheesy. It has to be real. This Bakersfield boy was the real deal.

I think it strikes home the way it does because we all of us are under our own sentence of death, many of us haven't been given a date, and the older we get, the more we miss the more innocent days long gone by, and the warm comfort they give us. My grandfather & us 2 grandboys listened to Merle every fish/hunting trip. His music never wore out, only the tape it played on. The background began having a bit of static, etc. When Grandpa bought his new truck, Grandma told me he loves the truck but was disappointed there wasn’t a tape player. I made plans the next day to schedule a day off & made the drive up to my grandparents in Idaho; riding shotgun w/ me that day was Merle Haggard in CD format just for Grandpa & our outdoor trips. When I got there, he was of course happy to see me on my surprise visit & I wanted to see his truck & suggested that we a go for a ride, which is what we did. “It has this & this, & can do this & that. It’s diesel so it will pull the camper easier now, and it can…” I said, “Well how’s the sound system? Put Merle in & let’s hear it.” He said, that’s “only damn thing” he “sure in the hell don’t care one bit for.” There was no tape deck. I said, “Well why not?” Then followed up w/ “Well it’s sure a damn good thing we don’t need one anymore” as I pulled the CD out from my jacket pocket & handed to him. He looked down at it & started to say, “What’s this? What do you want me to do with…” then he realized who & what it was & looked back up at me like he seen a ghost & then immediately he big smile & a few snickers as it set in to him that even though technology advances & time marches there’s some things that just refuse to change. ;) I was fortunate enough to be able to see Merle in concert many years ago. My grandpa had gotten us tickets to see him. Getting my grandpa up w/ the times of the day w/ his Merle CD was a small investment which he returned to me 10 fold years later by taking me to Merle in concert. Merle has a special place in my life & heart & I miss him, his music, those outdoor trips, & that time of my life, but most of all I miss my grandparents more than I could ever put into words & hope to see them again somewhere, sometime. _RIP Merle. I love you Orville & Wanda Bock, may we be together again someday…_

I was recruited as part of the security team. He was one of a kind and a legend then and now. His music will forever be remembered as the common mans. It is a true question, “Who’s gonna fill their shoes”.
*Nobody can fill their shoes* 😢😢

If his songs didn't touch your heart you weren't born with one ... hold him in your hands Lord and guide him where he needs to be ... RIP Merle

Scott Joss out of Redding, ca…..you should him play swing and jazz. Impeccable ear!!

Listen to the old stuff, the new country is just loud and garbage to make your ears bleed.
My husband says this is a sad song but it makes me feel good and smile every time I hear it. It takes me back to my childhood. My Daddy always listened to Merle💜
To me it's a trarjerkerrker..
I agree!❤
Our generation had the best of country music. This song still gives me goosebumps. We played this at my dad's funeral as we proceeded out it just seemed perfect . He was the reason I appreciated Merle, Hank,Waylon the Possum and so many others from that Era. It remains in my heart the best of country music for ever!!!! Whose gonna fill their shoes.

What a terrible loss to Country music,,,, absolutely unique performer.
The recording on the LP was a more upbeat tempo. The record label said it was to churchy done slow.
Hello 👋🏻
This song will live for many and many generations. Music lives longer than we ever will.

The beauty of Merle is that he left talented boys that sing just like him. Willie Nelson has a son who sounds just like him😊🎉

ABSOLUTELY THE BEST. I LOVED HIM. STILL DO.😢
Merle Hargard was a great giant in the world of country music. His songs are very inspirational indeed.
There is no better way to lower your blood pressure than by listening to classic country artists like Merle or the ultra-soothing voice of Marty Robbins. I must have my daily dose of this drug.
That man is the truest legend of country music hands down ..we played this song back to back at my dad's funeral..means alott thanks merle love you

This is so beautiful. I want to express how this song made me feel but just simply cannot. It's just so harmonious and peaceful.
and the lyrics are awful. A criminal is walking to death row, but he tries to find peace in his own death, right before he dies. He realizes in the last minutes how his life should have and could have been different! so sad. So awful. But the criminal made his choice. Now its death row. Wonderful rendition, love Merle so much.

I am ashamed that I didn't really appreciate his music when he was with us. I have gotten much wiser with the years. He wrote from the heart, and his brand of "country" music resonates with the best of American folk tradition. This will be honored American music forever.

You don't need to be an ex-con for this song to touch your soul. Beautiful and melancholy.
I think it strikes home the way it does because we all of us are under our own sentence of death, many of us haven't been given a date, and the older we get, the more we miss the more innocent days long gone by, and the warm comfort they give us.
Sadly, I know this is not completely true for some, but I can only speak from what I feel.

@@sartainja Why do you have a cold heart?
It’s diesel so it will pull the camper easier now, and it can…”
I said, “Well how’s the sound system? Put Merle in & let’s hear it.”
He said, that’s “only damn thing” he “sure in the hell don’t care one bit for.” There was no tape deck. I said, “Well why not?” Then followed up w/ “Well it’s sure a damn good thing we don’t need one anymore” as I pulled the CD out from my jacket pocket & handed to him.
He looked down at it & started to say, “What’s this? What do you want me to do with…” then he realized who & what it was & looked back up at me like he seen a ghost & then immediately he big smile & a few snickers as it set in to him that even though technology advances & time marches there’s some things that just refuse to change. ;)
I was fortunate enough to be able to see Merle in concert many years ago.
