- The Gundam Barbatos Lupus fought a fierce battle against the Hashmal in the vicinity of Chryse, a city on Mars and was so severely damaged that it was sent to the Saisei's MS workshop for a major upgrade.Data sampling of Barbatos Lupus’ fight with Hashmal was also conducted during the overhaul. To match the combat data of Mikazuki Augus, who was increasing his compatibility with the mobile suit through the Alaya-Vijnana System, the machine's response speed was increased to the limit of its theoretical value. Movement of the frame's joints were also delicately tuned to match the pilot's actual sensations. The suit's cockpit hatch was changed from its predecessors' top opening method to a front opening style in consideration of Mikazuki's worsened disabilities.
To more intuitively reflect Mikazuki's fighting style, the suit's arms were enlarged and elongated like a beast, and various weapons are fitted on the body. The arms' frame structure was also upgraded and reinforced. The tail parts of the Hashmal was transplanted to the suit's back, and through the Alaya-Vijnana System, Mikazuki controls this tail blade as if it was a limb.bOverall, the Gundam Barbatos Lupus Rex is customized for close combat, and its silhouette gives it a more ferocious look than its predecessors. The word 'Rex' means 'King' in latin, and this is fateful as Mikazuki is going along with Orga Itsuka, whose aspiration is to be "King of Mars."
One of the greatest mech designs ever, somehow a humanoid suit that looks and feel like a complete wild animal, it doesn't even need weapons, the entire Gundam is the weapon.
When you think about it, shouldn’t the whole thing BE a weapon from the beginning? I mean yeah, it was originally modular with room to swap out equipment to fit the need, but when the need IS death and destruction B.L.R. is more than enough.

I noticed it in the show and also here how in the final battle when Rex's eyes turn red that it sounds like he's barking and howling like a wolf. Sorta distorted but cool.
I’ve always loved how that howl has a pronounced wheezing mixed in. It’s just such a great touch.
Lupus Rex, translated to English from Latin it means, King of Wolves.

Barbatos Lupsrex is the best design in entire another century gundam imo. A lot of gundam designs look alike once you used to gundam universe but this. Barbaric, monstrous, yet main character’s mobile suit.

If Mikazuki and Akihiro weren't shot at by those orbital bombardments...Gjallorhorn would have just been EMBARASSED by literal mercenary kids. Barbatos and Gusion would have just torn through the entire fleet by themsleves and GODDAMN would it have been glorious. Julia should have died. There was no way she could have taken Barbatos at it's prime.
julia would have absolutly died but mika and akihiro were never making it out. Sure they might kill a few more for a few more hours but they no longer had any way to refuel or rearm. I'm willing to bet part of why barbatos was so much faster after the railgun hit was due to how low on ammo and fuel it was, giving it a massive power to weight advantage in gravity.

Sure, their grunts got what for by then, the reality however is that these two quite simply... couldn't be killed by regular pilots.
and reallistically, as a troop commander, you would run out of willing bodies to throw at the problem rather quickly due to a trashed moral... which was already low in the show even WITH the barrage.

5:40, we literally saw her go 1v1 with Mika and get completely destroyed, dude.
And I really don't get all of the negative sentiment for Julieta in the fandom. She's one of the characters who went through the most character growth in the series. She calls Rustal out for the things he's done, and even says that Tekkadan were more human than everyone else in the conflict.

the violence in this show is just ferocious. i loved that. Especially in season 1, which i enjoyed more overall, the sense of wanting to survive was great
What pisses me off so much about the Jasley fight is how JPT DARED to use the Turbines' own mobile suits after what they did to them. The absolute disrespect is unreal.
well turbine ms came from teiwaz. and since jpt also part of teiwaz. understandable for them to use same ms model
@@fairulian7469 I doubt they’re simply the same type of model. If they were, they’d likely be in the same color scheme of purple as the other JPT mobile suits. The ones seen in the fight like Hyakuri and Hyakuren are probably scavenged from the remnants of the Turbines. They’re not the simply using the same type of MS.
Well personally i think it goes to show how stronger Mika has become considering his first fight with them the turbines have Mika a run for his money but with lupus rex didn't even stand a chance
The suits used by JPT Trust are most likely suits that are readily available for purchase or internally developed by Teiwaz. This is evident due to JPT also having Man Rodis which we really only saw during the Brewers encounter and the Hugos which we saw during the capture of Sandoval. The Turbines however have 3, but really 2, suits that are internally developed which are the Shiden, Hekija, and the Rouei (which was just a rearmored Hyakuren). We probably don't see JPT using that many different suits probably due to budget and scale but even using the Hyakuri probably requires some skill to use as the pilot that Mika kills doesn't have the AV system.
I agree and personally, Jasely death was too quick, he should've died getting sucked into vacuum of space where his scream can't be heard but die agony.
Man, I just miss IBO. If there was ever an offshoot timeline that deserved a continuation, it's Post disaster.
Absolutely 100 percent, it's ending broke the history of gundam in Japan for being the most trending in 2016, it is recognized as one of the greatest gundam endings ever 💯
I would love to see a prequel set during the Calamity War, and the full 72 Gundam Frames at the time.
Well, in 2 years Ibo's 10th birthday would be a perfect opportunity to bring a prequel as there are still more than 50 Gundam frames that have not yet been discovered Or appeared

The decision to remove beam weapons from this series gave us some of the best combat the franchise has ever seen. Older gundams series put the gundam into a catagory of their own due to overwhelming firepower but this show really came down to Mikazuki just being the most insane pilot as far a raw skills are concerned even outclasses Setsuna.
Setsuna almost got electrocuted to death by an inferior unit by multiple generations while he was on the Exia, tbh Stesuna has always had to rely on better equipment to keep up, like the 00.
they really made use of the connection system that was used to pilot as well, the fact he had 3 of those nodes and survived was insane and it showed by just how far he could push Barbados further then any other person in the series could hope to match even with in theory superior machines.
He had won long before they where starting to do damage to him.
Not to mention that Barbatos' equipment is likely severely subpar compared to what it used to have during the Calamity War.
I don't think it was just the lack of beams, I think it was armor actually mattering, so it wasn't just one shots all the time, and when they happened it was impactful
I hope we see something else like this in years to come.
I always wanted a Gundam series that focused entirely on melee combat and IBO was what I craved. Despite its flaws, I'm grateful that it exists so I don't have to keep hopelessly hoping. I have always had interest in demonology as well and the series couldn't have come at a better time. The world-building and the sheer intensity of the battles are a dream come true.
The ending broke my heart. They didn't deserve the disrespect.
it's also a huge cop out. First of all Gaelio is dead as of S1 and you cannot convince me otherwise as there is NO explenation outside of straight up magic or plot armor to explain how he could survive having his cockpit stabbed fully through with a sword as big as a small building, Second that brainlet piloting the chain whip sword MS is nowhere NEAR skilled enough to hold of Mikazuki for any meaningfull length of time, add to that the nonsensical space battle taking a sudden shift for the worse when the planted spy fires off the daenslaif would not be a possibility just due to the way whatshisnuts who took the bael gundam structured his fighting force the Daenslaif MS would have been VERRY obviously out of place and stopped LONG before he could fire, and that's assuming the battle even could reach that point. nevermind the fact that without Gaelio's declaration of him getting assassinated by his friend would never have happened giving the senile old farts in charge of Galahad no real reason to not take a side.

That was part of the whole die a hero or live long enough to become the villain. The first season was a desperate fight for survival but the goal was the 2nd season was arguably greed to make Orga King of Mars.

For sure. There’s no way Gjallarhorn is letting a Gundam Frame go to waste after their performance in the events of this series. They’d probably take the Gusion, too. Wether anyone would be nuts enough to pilot them is another question.
@@TheSlamburger yeah it would be so cool if they made a serie or movie where the MC gets handed the restored and modified Barbatos as an omage. Only a few know of its past and the MC slowly as the story progresses get to know more of the frames old pilot and his life. While I imagine the Alaya system is thrown out it would also be cool if slivers of Barbatos' old personality or traces of Mika's in the operating system like the mech seemingly getting excited for fights or refusing to do something. Man Iron blooded oprhans was one of the first gundams I watched and it is by far my favorite.
Being a Gundam Frame from the Calamity War & had kept up with redesigns and repairs between seasons may have allow restoration possible as no one would let something like that rust away unless they had no idea what it was or how to keep it well preserved.

I think the series makes it clear it took a weapon capable of breaking through the crust of Mars to take them down.
Its no small feat, of which Rustal only used since he was wise enough to know Mika wouldnt go down in any other way.

@@jude0985 eh, she was the only one of the antagonists which had some kind of contrast to Mika but on Rustals side.
It felt more like the choice was made for a future story, given the fact Gjallahorn did end up having its family system removed for one based on the individuals acomplishments, and Mars got its democratic elections.
It feels that if Akatsuki ever ends up in a MS itd be under an official institution like Gjallahorn, over seen like someone like Jullieta who would take it the worst, since she wasnt all in with Rustals plan for Tekkadan.

I was so impressed when I hear the scream off a wolf coming from the barbatos in that moment I figured out why the name lupus Rex
Yup, the wolf howls as it moved in the Berserk mode were one of the things that make it easily one of my top 5 favorite suits. Plus, Barbatos is one of the Demon Lords of the Book of Solomon... combine that with the "Lupus Rex" and it's name is basically "Demon King of Wolves"
Although I like the lupus rex design and mainly because of his claws and his tail I still like the lupus more

Julieta hoists Barbatos' head, thinking that she and Gjallarhorn have won, not knowing that the entire Tekkadan unit mission was a sacrifice play to allow their comrades to escape. So their victory was a failure, which actually helped pave the way for Kudliea and Tekkadan's ultimate goal - a liberated Mars. To quote Kahless from Star Trek: "To win a battle, but lose an Empire is no victory."
I forgot just how much of a beast Rex is in CQC.. Yes, other gundams have advantage at range.

Sass/being a smartass aside thier aren’t many gundams and non gundam mobile suits that can handle the barbatos lupus rex on the account of the nano laminate armor and shear brute power, meaby gundam heavy arms,gundam age 1 spallow and gundam red astray (I’d include the 00 raiser but I feel like that’s just saying 00 qanta again so to speak)

Epyon is perhaps the only suit in any Gundam continuity that could match the Rex in close combat.
damn this scene. the old wound is hurting again. for me this is the best gundam series i've ever seen. MC and gang treated like garbage and then goes to the top epic fights, side character sacrifices were the best and so mich. but the ending was just so sad for me. ddnt even get to have an ending like Lelouch v britannia style in the leadt.
Old post, but in the end I think mika and orga got what they wanted. A way for Tekkadan to have a real life without having their existence be "they'll kill us all if we don't kill them first."

I really don't think she had an egregious amount of plot armor. She waited until the dainslefs nuked barbatos from orbit to make her move, and even then it was almost too early. Julietta to me sounded like a normal gundam protagonist. She called out her superiors for being underhanded, then grew up and realized if you want to make the world better you can't fight fair. But because so much of her world and the world of most other gundam protags revolves around idealism, she couldn't understand why tekkadan were as crazy as they were. In the end she figures it out as mika dies, and you can see it completely shatter her worldview.
Ironic that the greatest impact of tekkadan, who had no deep ideals beyond survival, influenced so many major players of the world. They all saw tekkadan and decided that they needed to make a place where tekkadan would never need to exist.

@@bjager6822 みんな結果としての敗北エンドには文句はないのよ。その過程が雑というか脚本のご都合展開が多すぎたのが視聴者が忌み嫌う理由。ガエリオ生きてた問題、ダインスレイヴ条約ガバガバ問題、マッキー弱体化問題、バエルしょぼくね？問題、それ殺す必要あったか？、オルガ通り魔に殺される雑さとかね。脚本家がガエリオの声優好きで肩入れしたのが全ての元凶だけどね...

This was his death flag line. When I first heard this while watching the anime, I knew.
Let's talk about Mika's last stand:
If peace was to come, then Mika's character has to die, sadly. The man-machine interface destroyed Mika's nervous system progressively, to the point of being more and more disabled by the Barbatos. The Barbatos steals Mika's humanity, Mika depends on the machine at some point, you can really feel that during the hug scene, where Mika can't come closer to his gf because he's pluged to the machine, and he'll fall off if he unplugs it. The less able Mika becomes, the stronger the Barbatos becomes, to the point of Mika going as far as giving up his whole body to his machine, just to fight to the end and save his brother in arms, as a beast & demon known as "Barbatos, The King of the Wolves (Barbatos is the name of a notorious demon)+ (the Lupus Rex)".
Note that the bestially of the Barbatos Lupus Rex is emphasized when you can hear a howling wolf when the Barbatos goes berserk during Mika's last stand, and damn, it works really well. There is a lot of inspiration from the Evangelion franchise for this "relation" between the pilot and its mecha. Just take a look at the EVAs going berserk in NGE or the RoE movies, you'll see what I mean.
Gundam IBO was a really well done Gundam anime that ends with an epic fight, and has one of the rare sad ending in the Gundam franchise, like the OVA's "War in the Pocket" had. It's ok, it's not a bad thing. Gundam's main theme is WAR, and the real tragedy of war is that heroes, righteous, virtuous people never have a plot armor. For once, Gundam IBO felt different and fresh compared to prior Gundam series, and that's why it is so much loved by the Gundam fandom. Not my favorite though, that place belongs to Gundam Unicorn for me, but IBO is probably my 2nd one.

I’ve often compared IBO to “Lord of the Flies” but after a few more runs through, I noticed a lot of similarities to “Faust” especially when you consider that Orga and Mikazuki make such kind of deals in one form or another.
the unfair winning of rustal were a thing i hate pretty much, mika carried most of the battles and there is only a few pilots of mobile suits who were needed to be stoped with the ilegal weapon because there were not chance of winning vs them otherwise, there were the 3 ace pilots of tekkadan, and the only one without a gundam frame the wife of the leader of turbines amida were the only one without a gundam frame that were killed that way, well she is the strongest without allaya vijnana system, she can hold herself with a normal suit vs the julia of julietta and amida only loose because she were attacked with the ilegal weapon, there were not other way to finish her.
I considered using the illegal weapons as a sign of Honor for Mika and Aikohiro. Rustal knew that no one down there could defeat Mika and Aikohiro. Plus, he couldn't wait them out since Gundam Frames in IBO are run by a perpetual motion machine and only use fuel to power their thrusters. Rustal's men would rather disobey him than die, so he needed to use illegal weapons to put Mika and Aikohiro at death's door. Even then, both pilots went down like true bad#sses.
As for Julietta, I'm on the fence about whether she could beat Mika. As you said, she's the best unenhanced pilot we have seen in IBO. But 2/3 of their fights, Mika had limits that prevented him from killing her. In the first battle, Tekkedan and Rustal's forces tried to capture the Pirates. To avoid any political ramifications, Tekkedan, and Mika had to fight Julietta and the Pirate forces without killing her. The second time was during the battle of Earth, where Julietta fought evenly with Mika but then lost at the end. The final time they fought was in the final episode, and Mika straight-up ignored her because he just wanted to take his many enemies with him.

@@zillagrilla315 Mika should have trashed Julietta in that last battle with his already crippled Barbatos but before he could deliver the death strike die giving Julietta permanent PTSD. Or at the very least leave her the last Galljahorn pilot standing on Mars. Leaving her with a guilty conscience that she couldn't even save one of her men against a heavily damaged mobile suit

Honestly same. The way I see it, the Gundams take more and more of their Pilot in return for power. First the body, then the mind and soul. I think the Gundams contain imprints of their past pilots who were plugged in, which is why Mika spoke to Barbatos like it was alive, and since Mika gave so much, his presence would be stronger in Barbatos

meh, i truly like him. he's literally my fav pilot but he's not even close to being the greatest. He's a kid who uses raw strength and has basically zero experience in combat (that's why he doesn't like the sword). in terms of character he is top 3. but in combat suletta f.e beats him in a split second. (but her shy character gets annoying)

初期段階の設定だとその辺の雑魚グレイズに仕留めさせる予定だったらしいし

from all the 72 gundam created in this timeline we've seen 4 maybe 5 if Gusion rebake full city counts and they all rock. we need to explore this setting more, it was really unique and interesting and deserves more content.

The only reason they don't really explore IBO that much despite having a really good setting is because a majority of the Japanese Gundam fandom hates IBO. It's popular for the western fans but Gundam is really niche in that market. Well atleast now were getting an anime version of Urdr Hunt, they should've released that game in the states instead of UC Engage.

Try Doing Gusion, Bael, Flauros, Kimaris, Vidar XX, Gamigin, Haagenti, Seere, Gremory, Dantalion, Astaroth.. Reveals of them in Manga and cutscenes and in-game🗿would be great, this is my recommendation

This is the most unique Gundam i ever liked, coz there is no OP nonsense involved in that universe, Pure metal clanking hitting each other, no laser guns, just physical bullets, no beam sabers, that's what makes it special, plus Barbatos is giving me evangelion vibes, coz how wild it is in battle.

One of the best series I watched. That end part where they did the howling with barbatos when the red eyes gets activated was just awesome. Crazy what them only being kids was able to accomplish

You raise your weapon preparing for anything that will come, and the last thing you see is this monster like mobile suit coming towards you at the speed of lights, instantly destroy and kill you in seconds.

Julietta's plot armor was insane when fighting Mikazuki, if she didn't have that, Mikazuki would have wrecked her like he did Carta.
I’m another series, Julietta would be the Federation pilot dealing with political red tape, factions within factions, questions of morality, and trying desperately to keep up with an unstoppable ace pilot, taking small wins whenever she can.
It’s funny to me, that the typical protagonist is right freaking there.
Calling it plot armor is kinda disingenuous. To use a Warhammer 40k analogy, she's the Guardsman who in spite of the fact she's armed with the equivalent of a flashlight and cardboard charges into battle against Chaos daemons and somehow lives to tell the tale. She's Gaelio without the support of Ein's brain in the back seat. She's also the yin to Mikazuki's yang--she's Rustal's Mikazuki. She was absolutely not Carta Isshu, who was defined by appearance and frankly hitched her wagon to the wrong horse.
She earned her place on the podium by being one of only two aces who could credibly climb in the ring with Mikazuki and walk out alive--the other being Gaelio. She understood the rules of the game she was playing when fighting Barbatos. She couldn't comprehend Mikazuki's motivation. Where Carta tried to act out knightly honor, Julietta wanted to know why Mikazuki was fighting. She just never got the answer because Mikazuki isn't the chatty type, and never really questioned it beyond what Orga's dream was--he wouldn't have been able to articulate the answer himself.
Yes, I'm a Julietta fan. She makes a FANTASTIC foil to Mika.
An absolutely mental final stand, probably one of my favorites, if not my favorite in the entire gundam franchise. I am sad that the writers felt the need to have a character that had struggled to hold a candle to mika for the entire series has the balls to gloat about it after defeating him when the dude tanked an orbital bombardment and wiped out a small batallion of mobile suits. maybe it wouldnt have felt so bad if after she was questioning if they were doing the right thing when these CHILDREN were willing to fight to their final breaths and beyond. I am thrilled that many of them made it out alive and after the first half of the first part of the series I had expectations that there were going to be more deaths in the second season, but my god they were either handled poorly, happened out of absolutely nowhere or were immediately given the "womp womp" treatment by the person that beat them.

@@Samudra-qm9dw Alright here quick note, the producers pretty much confirm in the Mechanical Works book that Mika wouldve beat the remaining life out of Vidar on a 1 to 1 since the AV E is an equal to the black market 3 plug Mika had after the deeper link from Edmonton or McGillis Rebirth AV. It is not anywhere near a limiter release.
Instead Vidar was chosen as a name to hunt McGillis due to his family crest, this is further explained in the short side story of urdr hunt for the prototype Vidar.
Rustal pretty much realized Gaelio wouldnt be able to beat him, or anyone really, so he dropped almost a petaton on them that went all the way and broke through the crust of Mars.

Julietta is a fucking joke, swoop in at the end in a perfectly undamaged and new Mobile Suit and steal the victory? Ridiculous, and it makes Gjallarhorn into even more of a laughing stock. This series has no happy endings, but this was just a kick in the ribs after the two heroes had already gone down. Yes I'm salty and bitter about it! Huff.
I was also salty because Gjallarhorn used the illegal weapons to bombard them so when Julietta announced they had slain "The demon" I just thought "Yeah? How many pilots and resources did that take ya? My opinion, wasn't worth it" lol

The opposing faction literally had to pull a deus ex machina against the Barbatos, because the show would've never ended if they didn't play dirty as shit against Mika.

@@0hvistkind of he was expecting Iok to jump in and help him but after what happened with the Turbines and the backlash they suffered from it Rustal severely shortened Ioks leash and their planned dual prong attack on Tekkedan never happened leaving Jasley to face the full might of Tekkedan on his own.
i wish i could redo the ending of IBO. i always found it interesting that Julieta was able to stay alive for long fighting Mikazuki.
Barbatos lupus rex is the best Gundam at close combat and mika is the best pilot no one can tell me otherwise

I'm personally not a big fan of IBO, but the ending scene was by far one of the most brutal sequences in Gundam history in my opinion.
if IBO ever got sequal, i think Barbatos frame will contain Mika past experience inside so the new pilot could train even faster from Mika past combat.

New type and space magic stuff is already in the gundam lore anyway and with part of Mika's in barbatos awakened and protect his own son, i think it's a good way to give IBO a happy end since og end with bitter sweet tone.
