By the way they played I'd have thought it's full of former Husker coaches, namely Scott Frost's staff. Turnovers, running the same plays that don't work, playing from behind, bad special teams play, poor tackling, no penetration on defense, poor blocking on offense, etc.

    1. It is good that the foreigners are finally getting into football and playing it with dedication and grit. I was really impressed with the Austrians in their game against Canada. If the foreigners win some games, that means they will begin to fund and support it more. And it will lead to better players and games.

Ok. So I looked it up. The team was only together from June 14-19 before the tournament. So yea, they hand 5 days and a handful of practices likely to get ready. That really isn’t enough to do any coaching or implement anything besides the most basic of plays. And means the guys hadn’t really even played together before. So imagine being a QB throwing to guys you have barely seen run a few routes, don’t know their strengths and weaknesses, etc.
Also, aside from being together for 5 days, it looks like players need to pay to play basically. There is talk of membership and participation fees as well as logistical costs.
They also needed to know about this and submit an application with video and stuff to be looked at for the team.
So I’m not really knocking any of the guys for this, really. It looked like a group of guys from D3 and NAIA who had never played together, weren’t coached as a team, and who were just looking to get not injured….and that’s because that’s exactly what it was.
Hopefully the guys didn’t have to pay their own airfare! But in general, pretty disappointing at the lack of effort and money behind this from the US. It doesn’t bode well for the tournament as a whole since the US is obviously the driver behind these tournaments and if our own team is barely even that, it doesn’t bode well for the effort and money put into the tourney as well. If we are looking to help spread the sport internationally, we gotta at least have a team that is actually a team. It doesn’t need to be the best players or anything, just with enough time together and with coaches to attempt some exciting play.
I say keep beating the crap out of us until we do Japan and Austria, and congrats.

Setting aside the put-on of jingoistic blubbering, this corroborates what was apparent in the game against Japan. The U.S. side is a hastily-assembled squad of D-III and NAIA underclassmen that have spent almost no time playing together, or working with their coaches. In contrast, the teams representing the likes of Japan and Austria likely are composed of most of a country’s best players in that age group, have actually provided for a greater period of time for team preparation, and benefit from reasonably well-established organizations of American football within each country. It shouldn’t be a surprise that those teams are competitive with U.S. teams cobbled together from small-college players.
We’re certainly long past the time when just about any group of American college players could expect to stroll onto the field and whip a team from anywhere else in the world. I’m not particularly bothered that any other nation manages to beat a squad representing the U.S. - it’s probably good for the growth of the sport’s global appeal - but respect for the game should demand that USA Football (the U.S.’s member of the International Federation of American Football (IFAF), and the internationally-recognized governing body for American football in the U.S.) find some way to provide U.S. national teams more time to train together, and work with their coaches.
By the way, Canada won the championship of this IFAF U-20 tournament, beating Japan 20-9.

You don't need pros to whoop everyone's ass. Im sure you can put together a team of college players who will never make the NFL and win easily. It just needs to be taken seriously, because you know everyone will have a target on your back because of who you are. Like I said, no excuses. You put on an American uniform in an international tournament, then you better represent properly. Or don't even enter. That goes for the coaching staff too by the way. Unacceptable.

There are some decent American football teams in Europe. The German League is quite entertaining and last I looked, there was a Europeanwide football league too. Yes, these teams usually have a number of American players at key positions but the home grown talent is really good. I live in Japan and knew there were a few colleges that play the sport but I never saw it on TV. There was a football scandal in the national news where a football player intentionally late-hit a quarterback, sending him to the hospital. Apparently his coach instructed him to do so. The football program at that Japanese college was discontinued as a result. But apparently American football is still alive in Japan and producing some good players.

I know it's obviously not your best squad, but the American flag and uniforms in an international tournament still means something. Especially when it's a sport like football. America should never ever get embarrassed in football, basketball or baseball. Lose, maybe. Embarrassed? Never. No excuses. And this coming from a non American.

The issue is that our country only takes these tournaments seriously once our teams lose. Aside from the US not sending better players and coaches, the team was also probably made last second, giving the players no time to properly practice and study. Also, we only sent a roster of like 33 players where every other country sent out 45 man rosters out. The other countries aren't necessarily better. They are catching up, but I'd say they're more prepared than the American team.

Like I said before, these guys are just a sacrifice. They’re the team that came before the dream team and for those who are complaining, I bet 99.9% can’t name 1 member off that ‘88 team nor would you care to. Though I’d also bet 99.9% of you can remember exactly what happened in ’92 born or unborn. Whether this was a conscience decision or not, if great players are inspired by this then the outcome will be the same. But if you honestly think about it, doesn’t it make way more sense to let these other countries get their hopes up so that their kids will want to play and the adults will want to watch… It sucks but sometimes you have to sacrifice for the greater good. That’s business. Now hopefully it’ll turn out to be good business. And just like in ‘88, no one will remember this team. But everyone will remember the next one though. Stay positive. God Bless 🇺🇸
