As a longtime soapmaker, teacher, and laboratory technician I highly recommend that you do not use vinegar on your skin to neutralize lye. It causes a chemical reaction that increases the burn. Instead rinse your skin with copious amounts of cool water immediately! Trust me the burn from acid/base chemical reaction hurts intensely and it takes quite a while to heal. Make sure you rinse with copious amounts of water at least 5 minutes or more, depending on location and severity. However, cleaning surface areas with the vinegar is best just remember to rinse those areas thoroughly clean water. Otherwise, great job! The soap looks beautiful!
Should it should be lard not oil you can get that at Lowe's I think you can get it at home Depot but if it's natural soap it should be lard as far as I remember the essential oils is correct I haven't gotten to the part where you add bentonite clay to make it more frothy I'm just watching this video as a refresher course but from what I recall the more bentonite clay the frothier the soap is so basically more bentonite clay shaving cream for men less than tonight clay standard soap I'll post under this comment if we get to that point in the video but like I said I'm just watching this as a refresher course because I just watched a video on Elon musk saying AI is going to kill us all and I was like no they're going to kill you because you rely heavily on technology me I live in a 40-year-old motorhome and rely completely on the land so I just wanted to make sure I was still up to par but good work on the video so far I'm 4 minutes 11 seconds into it so let me finish the video and yeah good work and thank you for reminding me it's 1:00 to 2:00

Re: the vinegar debate. Borax as an aqueous solution - i.e. dissolved in water - is alkaline with a ph of 9.4-9.5 - this is what I use very effectively in an on-hand spray bottle as a quick go to for any spills or splashes. I also use it to neutralise any residual Lye in /on my utensils. Borax requires hot water to dissolve so make some up ahead of time. A small amount of borax Solution can also be incorporated into your soap batter to act as a ‘buffer’ to neutralise any unsaponified Lye. This stabilises the soap, & makes it more effective, whilst increasing the bubbles 😊. It’s important to Note here that ‘BORAX’ is not to be confused with Boric Acid
It’s crazy how lye isn’t supposed to come in contact with skin but once it’s added to other ingredients it’s soap that can be used in skin. Thanks for sharing

I am thinking about making my own soap and appreciate your video, thanks! However, why do you use so many different oils? Is just one type ok? Thank you!
Hello there, do you use parchment paper as the base and a cardboard box to cure the soap before it’s ready to use? Do you use the equipment that you use during the soap making process for other things or just the soap making? When you wash the bowls/ stainless steel pots afterwards can you wash them spilling that residual lye mixture directly into the faucet? Thanks in advance for the info and for any tips ! I’m excited to make the soap 🧼!
I remember my mom making g soap for all of our family but she died before teaching me. 💔 thanks for sharing because I really want to be like Leeanne 😀❤
Would it be better to infuse the lavender leaves in the oil? Im thinking that way because i do my herbs and season like that when i make salad dressing
For the olive oil, it doesn't matter if it's organic or not. For the coconut oil, make sure that it is coconut oil in its solid form. The refined liquid coconut oil doesn't work.
Please help, so to use this soap you have to have soft water In your home? I was going to make soap, but I bought from a homesteading farm the same soap I was going to make. I thought I’d try it, but it leaves my hair ratted and my skin seems like it has a film. Kind of sticky like. So I abandoned the idea of making soap if this was going to be the result.
Because this is a chemical reaction it will increase its own temperature. I then just wait for it to cool down to room temperature before mixing it in with the oil solution.
With this recipe and the current molds that we use it makes about 20 bars of soap. They are roughly two and a half ounce bars each +/- . If you would like more information and links for our preferred items and recipes you can go to this link that will provide you more information. Thank you so much and enjoy your soap making adventures! youtuberecipes.heartwaymembers.com/
There are other recipes that use lard, tallow, palm oil, ect.. they are all different and have specific recipes for each different one. The chemistry is unique for each mixture of ingredients and can even change with slightly different ingredients within each oil/fat base. Hopefully this helps. Blessings!!
can someone explain to me (im new at soap) how this can be safe for our bodies when using Lye? isn't lye used to clean clogged pipes? isnt this a strong chemical if interacts with our skin can make us blind or burn the skin? i dont mean to sound harsh just trying to understand the process
Hopefully this helps a little bit.... Lye: More Than Just a Scary Word When you hear the word "lye," images of harsh chemicals and potential burns might come to mind. However, lye has a long and fascinating history as a key ingredient in soap making. Contrary to popular belief, when used correctly, lye is perfectly safe and has been a cornerstone of personal hygiene for centuries. A Historical Perspective The journey of lye in soap making dates back thousands of years. Ancient civilizations discovered that mixing fats or oils with an alkaline substance, often derived from wood ashes (which contain lye), created a cleaning agent. Over time, the process evolved, and lye became a staple in homemade soap recipes. The Science Behind the Suds Lye, chemically known as sodium hydroxide, is a strong base. When combined with fats or oils in a process called saponification, it undergoes a chemical reaction that transforms these ingredients into soap. The end product is a gentle cleanser that effectively removes dirt and oil without harming the skin. Important Note: It's crucial to handle lye with care, as it can cause severe burns if not handled properly. Always wear protective gear, such as gloves and goggles, when working with lye. However, once the saponification process is complete, all traces of lye are converted into soap, rendering the final product entirely safe for use. Lye Soap: A Sustainable Choice In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in handmade, all-natural products. Lye soap has become a popular choice for those seeking gentle, environmentally friendly alternatives to commercial soaps. Many people appreciate the ability to control the ingredients and create customized soaps tailored to their skin type. Safety First While lye is a powerful ingredient, it's essential to remember that the safety of lye soap depends on proper soap making techniques. Always follow reputable recipes and instructions, and ensure that the saponification process is complete before using the soap. By understanding the history and chemistry of lye soap, you can appreciate its benefits and use it confidently as part of your personal care routine.
Great video! I have a quick question, what temperature Lye and Oils supposed to be when it’s time to mix them together? Thank you for the video it’s very good🥰
That would be roughly correct. I believe the finished weight is around 3.1 lb after curing and evaporation. Normally I get about 20 bars at 2.5 oz each finish product.
"Lye is mixed with oils and fats. This process is called saponification. During saponification, the lye reacts with the oils and fats to create soap and glycerin. If the process is carried out correctly, there is no lye left in the soap. What this means is that while all real soaps use lye in the creation process, there is no lye leftover in the finished product." ___Bing search
Nice work! Please do not use palm oil as it kills the habitat of urangutans in Borneo. The population has decreased dramatically because of palm oil plantations. There are many other options to use. Besides that, thanks for sharing and good luck with the business!
If chemically, the vinegar can make the lye burn worse, then why does every person I watch on utube video say to use vinegar. That can be confusing to those learning and even Julianne whose grandmother taught her
I love that you make your own soap and you have inspired me to try to make my own, However I was so surprised to see that you use palm oil. I have read that miles and miles of tree plantations are being destroyed because of deforestation. There is also exploitation of workers and the use of child labour not to mention the devastating effect that deforestation has on animal communities such as endangered elephants and rhino and the resulting green house gases emitted in the production of palm oil. Is there another oil you could use instead of palm oil? Thank you.

2nd step measure lye solution:
13 oz distilled water
