@@FonPacific Compared to just using the ankle technique? I was under the impression that swivelling creates more roof for the beater swing so you get a bigger sound.
I've been playing for over 20 years and something I learned a long time ago is when learning a new technique, it's all about how you think about it. Stressing that swivel uses the ankles, sitting back on the throne, and thinking of it as "shaking off" the muscle tension is a very good way to think about the technique going in. I'm gonna get on the kit when I get home as I want to learn this over heel-toe. Thanks for this man.
Changing my position on my throne had an instant positive impact on how well I could use my ankles. It's amazing how much small things can affect you. Thanks!
Can I ask what you changed about your throne position? I’ve experimented with a lot of different heights and forward and backward distances. No matter how many videos I watch and how much I practice, this swivel technique is just not coming together.
@@DRUMADDICT29 The throne hasn't moved, but my butt moved further back, instead of being kind of perched on the front. Basically I just followed what he did in the video with regards to balancing to find the right position.

Great explanation! Just got. me a new demon drive XR double pedal so time to learn some new double bass technique after 20 years of the "blasting the legs" method :)
Thanks, Eugene, for getting into a number of the details! Seeing the finer points of seating position, ankle vs leg motion, etc., is one of the big differences between Drum Technique Academy & so many others.

i have been trying to learn ankle and swivel for the past 1,5 years, failed many times so now i play heeltoe, but i will try to learn swivel again. Thanks for the motivation Eugene.
Very good lesson, I'll be taking this on board as I've really wanted to try and develop a swivel technique. I notice my ankles tend to do this a little sometimes with my playing, but this is a good way to learn a decent technique and focus on doing this at slower BPM then raising it up. Thank you so much :)

Very nice. But how was Francesco Paoli achieving the very fast parts while his body being much bended towards the drums all the time? Other technique? Or more painful and at some part, the reason he left you the drums?
I find it more comfortable to do two strokes per side, not double strokesand swivel slowly, is this a thing anyone else has done? Hitting a sloppy 210 now which is the best I've ever been. Thanks heaps for all the motivation in the last 6 months!
Hello!! I’ve watched lots of your videos and I’ve been trying to learn the ankle technique but my double bass pedal, i think something is wrong with it or i don’t know how to use it but if you could make a video on how to setup the “Pearl P932 Longboard Double Bass Drum Pedal” for this technique I would really appreciate it.
@The Truth of the Matter how many double bass drummers started out knowing every little aspect of not only their pedals, but every pedal on the market? Stop being an elitist snob. Everyone has to start somewhere. Going by your assessment, teen age Dave Lombardo should never have played double bass drums in Slayer, Gene Hoglan should have never played double bass drums, George Kolias as well. I mean, how dare someone attempt to pick up drumming without knowing every lug, drum dial setting, cymbal tone , foot pedal, spring tension, beater type and weight, head, stick, stand or rack accessories available, right? Going with your rationale, there would never be a double bass drummer on the planet because they should have known every possible detail about drumming and equipment before they ever sat on the throne behind the kit. I'm so sure Joey Jordison, Alex Rüdinger, Derek Roddy, David Diepold, Pete Sandoval, Chris Adler, Steve Asheim, Flo Mournier, Ben Harclerode and the rest knew every possible aspect about drumming, techniques, and equipment before they ever sat down and played a single song. I'm sure no questions were ever asked and no trial and error occurred, they all just knew exactly what the dynamics of their pedals were and had them perfectly set without ever putting foot to board and played a single double stroke on their bass drums. I'm sure you started out knowing everything too, had no questions, didn't experiment to see what works best for your comfort level and muscle groups, you just set the pedals right out of the box and began playing at top level 🙄🙄🙄 Clown 🤡
I'm learning swivel now because i noticed that ankle motion doesnt get me above 250bpm. I tried swivel and i immediately noticed that i could reach 270-280 If i synchronize both feet Thats my struggle now but i'll get there ;)
some people could be scared off by metal music. but for me I could be scared off by people wearing neat suit that probably want to sell you something. but in this case I'm buying it. LOL
I remember discovering this worked by accident , back in 90 I got a second bass drum and was learning all Dave lombardos stuff , I played everything heel up and single stroke , once I'd become good I could get to 280 bpm but it was impossible to go faster , that was until I was joking around and found swivel and double strokes by accident .
*0:53* - _"In order to feel comfortable learning swivel, you should be able to pull off some 160-180 BPM, straight ankle, double bass."_ Me: *Well, fack.* 😞
hello marthyn. i am an accomplished drummer, and am trying to add legit double bass chops to my repertoire (finally). i greatly appreciate the lesson, and would even be willing to pay a premium for your teaching. however - you are going a little too fast on the ankle based hits. you have very developed control and technique for double bass work specifically, and are assuming others do as well. i need to understand the mechanics at 20 bpm less please. not slowing down the video - that is not the same mechanical execution.
Swivel technique (aka dancing) on the kick drums is really only for tall guys with skinny legs. And honestly,, swivel technique is redundant and id only going to hurt your knees in the long run.
I'm not seeing how my Tama Iron Cobra double pedals are good for this as they don't have the long boards of the Kopyto pedals in this video. After months of practice with zero progress with this shit technique ( literally couldn't even achieve 80 BPM,using swivel foot, it got out of sync every time, for several months doing it for hours per practice session, doing NOTHING ELSE but trying to nail this so called technique, including setting my pedals up on a practice pad and just practicing with a metronome), I defaulted back to the Derek Roddy method of just using my whole leg and improving speed. He calls BS on swivel foot and heel toe techniques, and I agree with him. You can get the high speeds without bullshit techniques. As he said, there are no hacks or cheats. I can get 220 BPM using my whole leg, and can do it for prolonged periods. From my experience, swivel foot simply doesn't work at all for me. It only works if you start practicing it at age 4, and continue to force yourself to fail over and over until age 24. I don't have time for that much failure when I can reach my speed goals with a less flashy, more direct method
