Checking it out now. If this works I am 1000% recommending this lol.
Marthyn is legend. As an academy member, I can say that he's the real deal and has the goods, understands this stuff very deeply and can communicate it effectively. Absolute gold.
This video was the greatest video I've ever seen about double pedals. It is a great feeling to know that others are experiencing the same problems, to know the confusing issues about the settings, to know that I am not the only one who feels incompetent with the double pedal, and to know that the best setting is actually about feeling comfortable. Thank you very much indeed!
Thank you for sharing your expertise with us!
This means so much to someone like me. Thank you ❤️.
Your expertise is immeasurable! Thanks for all the tips.
thx for watching Craig!!
I really appreciate your technical advice Marthyn - you are a fantastic teacher!
Thx alot my friend
Great video man! I'm 15 and I love playing METAL. With much double bass. I use the Pearl RedLine Eliminator belt pedal. Changing the cam into the yellow one helped me a lot! I cranked the spring almost full up since I got the endurance to play consistent 140bpm. But all the rest is practice practice practice. Ok it's sometimes really boring but without all adjustments are useless. I personally practice like The Rev said, I sit down and play for like 1 or 1 and a half hours just double kick and go for endurance not for speed, because if you have endurance, you automatically have speed. First I warm up, and then I practice. Until now I practice a constant speed of 150-155 BPM and then I play 160 BPM for 5-10 minutes and after that I go back to 150-155 BPM for a while and then repeat. My fastest speed is 200 BPM, for a few seconds and 180 for 30 seconds. I do it every single day at least once and if I have enough time I do it twice a day. It's like you said, it's only possible if you have enough time every day, and I'm really happy that I have that! It's a lot but I think it really gets payed off after a while of doing it! It helped me a lot. So I was able to cover Eagle Fly Free or Faster Than The Flame with triplets on the kick at 200 bpm. With practice everything is possible🤘🤘🤘
Great video
In these videos you always talk about "improving" your double bass drumming. Can you do a "one step before" video on how to combine both feet while doing the ankle technique?
That would be great. I'm having issues getting foot independence. Lots of unison kicks. Very frustrating
That's a great question...will cover it in one of my next videos, cool?
@@drumtechniqueacademy Awesome!!!
A video would be sweet, but the best thing I could say for you until then is to slow it waayyy down and just be smooth. Speed just happens after that.
I don't think so. We get multiple messages and questions each week from drummers that wasted years trying to master double bass drumming by practicing slow (many of them gave up out of frustration at some point). Practicing at 100 bpm will make you a master at playing at 100 bpm. But this won't get you to 200!
Vielen Dank für das Video 🙏
Sehr gerne!
Thank you! your videos are super helpful
I am your unofficial student
Thanks for watching 🤟 unofficial? => time to join the dta family my friend
This is some really fucking great info. Thanks for sharing! Cheers.
thx for watching!
I remember taking Lombardos settings, wow lol
Wow you just totally solved my issues! Thank you!
Glad you found it useful. Can you please tell me: what was your biggest struggle when it comes to double bass drumming?
@@drumtechniqueacademy My biggest issues were pedal setup. Trying to figure out what spring tension is best and beater height and distance. Another issue is getting my left foot to match my right using ankle technique
This might sound like a stupid question but is a 45 degree angle the factory settings on a chain drive pedal such a pearl eliminator or tama iron cobra where the beater is central to the marker? Or is it a bit further forward and closer to the head?
Little to no spring tension has worked best for me. Never could get used to tight springs.
I used to always play with tight springs but could never get what I wanted out of the playing. Finally after 30 years decided to back the tension all the way off. I'm 40 playing double kicks like I'm 22 lol. Amazing how much it changed my playing capabilities.
I'm just a beginner drummer with a single pedal. I'm working on my foot speed. When I sit down fresh at the kit my speed is getting better and better. However I can only go for a couple minutes and then it's like I can't even get a double kick in. If I walk away for a couple hours and come back the same thing happens. I can only go for a minute or two. Is that normal for a beginner?
Muscle group involvement. I'd just like to highlight the most important moment of this video at 9:45. That's IT!! That's the one thing that I'm unconsciously doing, which as you describe, throws off balance. This is the missing link. Just keep in mind all the time with the weak foot. Calf! Claf! Calf! :)
Yeah sometimes it's just a small detail that makes all the difference
I honestly just have fun with it. If I find myself struggling I just slow it down and still enjoy it while improving. Just have fun with it.
I have been struggling with this lately. I’ve been playing lots of punk rock lately. My peddle feels like my spring tension is border line to strong to be fast. When I focus on it and kinda add the oomph it needs the peddle feels like it sticks and doesn’t come back quick. Weird issue
Thanks Marthyn, this is so spot on. I finally can feel how to relax my right upper leg and now finally I'm using my ankle to do the motion without any upper leg involvement. I'm working on leg synchronization but I'm more convinced than ever that I will make it after thinking for so many years that it would never happen! Mostly thanks to your videos man, this was one of the hardest obstacles to ever surmount.
Oh my friend - your comment just made my day. Thx alot. I will record a video about leg synchronization soon!
Game changing infos in this video. Today I went to my practice room and realized that the left foot spring was tighter then the main one. I put both at the same tension and voilà! My lest foot was faster, smoother and I improved. Also focusing on avoiding to use upper leg muscles on the left foot. Cheers!
Thanks for watching. What pedals do you own right now?
@@drumtechniqueacademy Iron cobra power glide chain drive 2008 version with trick driveshaft, stock springs. Thinking about upgrading with ACD direct drive and beater shifter. At the moment I'm around 150 bpm, gradually increasing.
awesome - that sounds like a great mix of the old tama pedal + the trick driveshaft... and yes, those acd parts would work great as well...
@@drumtechniqueacademy happy Easter!
thx, same to you my friend!
Hi Marthyn
Big fan of all your content to the extent that I see new videos pretty much when they arrive. First of all, big thanks!
I’ve tried multiple times to receive your free pedal settings tutorial by answering the quick questionnaire but don’t seem to receive anything. Can you help me out?
Would really appreciate it
Thank you for your great feedback. Regarding your question: pls contact our support via email.
Thanks for the tips. My weak leg is a problem as are my pedal settings. I also have an issue on my AL2's where the locking screw on the shaft slips, making my left foot board go lower then the right, which in consequence makes the beater bounce off the head and not actually give it a nice stroke. If just fells sloppy. When you mentioned your missing ingredient of having your left hip flexor contracted being to your detriment, I wonder if that was as simple as it was actually just throwing your balance off. It seems like no matter what I do, even just basic 16th are sloppy. That said, remove the pedals, and I can play on a practice pad with my feet on the floor no problems. nice clean even and fast. Once there is tension under that left foot, it just feels weird.
thank you my friend. At first I'd recommend to fix your pedal so that both pedals are even... then let's focus on your technique.
@@drumtechniqueacademy I just spent a few minutes feeling it out and I can feel exactly what you are talking about. with any tension on my hip muscles, I can feel that tension all the way down to my foot and how it is actually inhibiting the ankle motion.
Hey dude, I love my Axis pedals, but I hate that drive shaft design. ACD Unlimited makes an upgraded version that doesn't have this problem; I've had mine for a year now with no complaints.
@@swampmanbfe Yeah that joint sliding is NO BUENO! Mine has a brass collar on it woth 2 set screws as well, so when I have to adjust it, it's a PITA.
@@TheDivergentDrummer Huge pain, for sure! I had better luck starting the drum key screw until it makes contract, snugging the two set screws down completely, and then tightening the drum key one all the way; having the drum key screw in too far before the Allen screws were in place caused the shaft to slip more often, in my experience. Definitely not much fun to have to dig out the hex keys in the middle of a set. The breaking point for me ended up being those exposed bearings; I got tired of trying to find the parts in my rug and put them back together.
Fuck this video alone has fixed me up so much lol Damn... Thank you sir
😁 awesome my friend. Your comment just made my day 😄
Question :
Can you hit as hard and consistent without triggers or a mesh head ?
Triggers don't force you to hit softer my friend... you can play loud and still use triggers...
I play with a dead spring on the pedal.
What's the second band name he said after George kollias
Band: Krisiun, drummer: max kolesne
Using other players pedal settings has NEVER worked for me, even if I have the same exact pedals
Same here 😁
Hi❤
How much is your drum academy courses?
Our double bass drumming program is 997 for 6 months 🤟
@@drumtechniqueacademy I couldn't pay the academy but only with the youtube videos I could finally unlock the ankle technique. However for those who have the extra cash and want to go faster, I wouldn't doubt it. Marthyn's the man!
Thank you! This really gives me clarity on my approach to fixing my slave foot! Thanks again Sir!
I must be lucky I had no problems at all 240 beats no problem
video or it didn't happen :-)
