    I am working on giving grace more for taking the “rough or busy” days off. Definitely a blessing for homeschooling. ❤

    Thank you so much! I appreciate your perspectives. We used to do the library when my son was much younger, but I recently visited the 'teen' section of one of our local libraries, and I was so disappointed and shocked. One of our local churches does have its own library, which has been a refreshing option over the last several years 😊.

      A church library?! Oh man, you hit the jackpot! I wish our church had something like that. We would go all the time.

    Thank you,Thank you, Thank you. Library books are so grouse with germs. So thankful to here about another mum that does this.
    We love to purchase our resources and books from a local used book store.

      @HomegrownHomeschool  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! Used books all the way! Haha

      My kids go to the library religiously and we never get sick and I have 5 kids. Being a germophobe stressed out is worse for your health than library books. Plus used books you have no idea how many hands that has passed down to also, so that logic makes no sense, if you were worried about germs even brand new books pass through multiple hands and get picked up by people browsing.

    We don’t do library trips often either. Our library is 30 minutes away in a way we don’t go often.

    • @HomegrownHomeschool

      I would be even worse at returning them if it was that far away 🤣

    We don't do most of these too! So comforting your words about park days. Because I totally wish I could do that but just cannot with my son. Maybe next year when he's 2.5/3yrs?

    • @HomegrownHomeschool
      @HomegrownHomeschool  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We love going to the park but there is just no way we could homeschool there. I’d be in a panic the whole time 🤣

    We aren’t strict about our schedule either. I love the flexibility. And some days my kids just need the morning to play together. I love that we can do that.

    I get books from the library to use with school but we don't go as a group. I put them on hold and then pick them up. Then I renew them as long as I can/need and then drop them off when due. I am doing okay now but I've racked up bills many times before. We don't do much electronics for school either, especially my grade schoolers.

    I don't schedule the school year at all...we do breaks as needed. We school as long or as short as we need.
    We also don't do library runs (and for the same reasons).
    We don't do unit studies. We read books together and that is how history/science/geography gets done a lot of the time. Though, I do have maps and we do some "map work" but this year with a 1 year old...we have mostly taken a break from geography (aside from within our books).
    I tend to stick with curriculum that works so once we find a winner then we stick with it year after year (we have only been doing homeschooling for 5 years).
    I also don't look up public school standards. I have told my kids that if they are learning more and more each year then we are doing great because we are building onto our knowledge base.
    Comparison is hard. I work hard against it. But, at times it sneaks in.
    I don't time my lessons. We just do enough (what feels good) or we finish the lesson if that works.
    I don't do reading guides/study guides/literature guides. We discuss verbally books and ideas. I feel a little guilty that I don't make my oldest write down summaries for her books...but we do IEW writing with our Co-op and that is so intense for at the moment that I don't want to give her more. Anyway... there's that.
    That is what popped into my brain!

    • @HomegrownHomeschool
      @HomegrownHomeschool  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve thought about using IEW but so many say it’s intense. It makes me scared to use it 🤣 I loved hearing all of your “don’ts” I don’t make my son write summaries either of that makes you feel better, lol.

    Ha! Every now and then...... I mean every now and then- we do go to those places and do a little school work. If I had to choose-I prefer to go the library actually because it's quiet!.🌻

    About library- we have many libraries very close to us. But I don't like taking my kids either. We live in a very liberal state. Libraries are insane. What I learned to do is when I hear about a great book somone recommends... I just place it on hold with nearest library. Our libraries don't charge late fees for several years now "due to covid" which has been a saving grace for us also. It's very hard to return onto me 😅

    • @HomegrownHomeschool
      @HomegrownHomeschool  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m glad I’m not the only one who has a hard time returning on time 🤣 I’ve tried to place them on hold to pick up and end up forgetting lol

    In PA we are required to test in 3rd, 5th and 8th grade so last year was the first time we went through the testing process with my son. I just tried to make it as casual as I could, but clearly explain what was expected without overwhelming him, because I wouldn't be able to help once he started. I had no clue how it was going to go, and while it makes no difference how good or how bad he actually does (as far as I'm concerned and as far as the evaluator is concerned), I wanted to cry when he was done. He did so well and I was so proud of him😭 And then I was able to breathe again😂
    Thanks for hosting!!🥰

    We are also "eclectic" with curriculum. I think I would say I use 3 main "curriculum" and then add in stuff with books. I wasn't counting "phonics/reading " programs because I have six, (I think...) and we just bounce between which one works in the moment...lol! 🙃🤣

    We don’t get dressed unless we are going out!!! I have kids with medical issues so it helps that as well!!! We don’t force curriculums and I research curriculums to make sure I’m buying something that will or could work!!! When I was partly homeschooled my friends mum
    Put both me and her in level 10 language arts and I was behind and I hated language arts!!! I don’t mind going down or up levels!!! We use different cups companies as well!!! Bad days we try to turn around but I don’t mind taking off the day!!! I love coffee shop and beach schooling!!! My 5 year old is awesome as she’s got grammie and pops and the dogs to play with!!! Grammie and pops take their dog along with our 2 dogs to the beach!!! We don’t test either!!! I don’t plan for breaks!!! We’ve not been to the library for a while due to the selection of books!!! Idk what public school standards are as I believe in child led learning!!! My older daughter’s friend came to me upset about where she is and I told her she’ll get there and that’s why she’s homeschooling!!!

      Fun fact: The zoo in our previous city had this amazing secluded treehouse spot. We once took some school work with us when we went to the zoo, and it was so peaceful and fun!

    Yes we also are all about getting dressed before we start the day - I let the kids get started in PJs (when they work on their own early in the morning). But usually 9AM sharp it's time for all the kids to be dressed and brush their hair! We also are not a one curriculum only users here 😃 We have such a variety of books from different companies. I don't mind it at all!
