  • BMW, Air Head Boxer, R Series service. 1975 R75/6.
This bike has been off the road for over a year.
THIS IS PART 1 of a series of six videos, they document the service work required to get the bike back on the road.
In this video, part 1, I’ll show you some clips of what’s covered in the other five videos, we will then prepare the bike for the service: Remove the engine crash bar and leg shields. I’ll show you the best way I have found to remove petrol tank. Then we will remove both carburettors.
The other videos will show in detail the following tasks:
IN PART 2: URL: • R75/6 Part 2. BMW. Air...
Drain and replace the oil from the engine, gearbox, shaft drive & final drive housing. How to remove and refit the engine oil filter. How to remove the Air filter and petrol pipe assembly.
    IN PART 3: • R75 6 Part 3. BMW Air ...
How to completely strip, clean, and assemble the Bing carburettors, I will show you every air and petrol way within the carb and how to make sure they are clear. I won’t be using an ultra-sonic cleaner in case you haven’t got one, they are not an essential tool, but they are rather good at cleaning carburettors!
    IN PART 4: • R75/6 Part 4. BMW Air ...
How to change the points, set the points gap, then adjust and set the ignition timing.
    IN PART 5: • R75/6 Part 5. BMW Buil...
How to cut and build a new petrol pipe assembly. How to fit a new air filter. How to assemble the carburettors to the engine, connect their cables, and adjust float height in the float chamber.
    IN PART 6: • R75/6 Part 6. BMW, Air...
How to set the Bing carburettors to their basic settings, then tune and balance both carburettors as the engine is running. Last of all it’s a road test.

Excellent video, very detailed and good camera work.. I have a R100RS, I found I could replace the cross connecting fuel pipe without removing any bodywork. It was a tight fit, but was possible. Thanks for a great video. 🙂

Hello Tall-Guy. Thank you very much for your kind words about my video. Well done changing that petrol cross pipe without removing the air cleaner box, there's not much room round there.
I had a look at your "A run out on my old 1981 BMW R100RS. Nice bike, and nice country side. I'll leave you a comment. Every little helps, don't I know it!

Hello Jonathan. Unfortunately at the moment I do not have a video showing how to set the valve clearance. I do intend to produce one, and I'm hoping it will be in the next couple of months. Thank you for your comment. Take Care Jim

Hi Jim, will you be doing a video on setting up the clutch by any chance? thanks for the super videos.

Hello Paul. Thank you for your comment. I make my BMW R75/6 service videos when my bike needs work. The clutch is working fine at the moment, so I haven’t any plans to make a video about it. Are you looking for information to adjust the cable and levers, or changing the clutch plate and setting that up? Take Care Jim.

Been enjoying your Bmw videos. Love the screen and the leg guards you have. I suffer with cold legs even though I wrap up well so have been looking for a set of leg protectors. Anyway I’ve managed to locate a pair which I’m hoping to buy but sadly can’t find any brackets for sale anywhere.
If you have the time and inclination, would you be interested in making me some brackets…..( thats me assuming you have the tools etc)…..I would obviously pay if you were interested.
    I’m located Sheffield….and the bike is a 1976 r60/6.
    Regards
    Jonathan

      Hello Jonathan
I'm so glad you enjoy the BMW videos, unfortunately I am unable to manufacture any parts for you as I am so busy on projects. I can take some close up images of my leg protectors brackets and mounts if that would be of any help to you. Sorry I cant be of more useful. For your information the Tri point screen is a BMW original piece of kit, I bought it second hand over thirty years ago. The leg shields were made by someone here in the UK, I think he did advertise in the BMW club magazine , again it was also years ago. Hope this was of help. Take Care Jim

Hi, thank you for your great videos. It sure is a labour of love keeping my R75 running. I'm not particularly mechanical but I love the old bikes so here I am. While trying to free my throttle cables I've now found myself down a rabbit hole. The manual says to remove the throttle cable from the carburetor but that is where I am stuck. Any chance you can give me some advice? Do you have a video detailing how to remove this cable? Thanks for any help!

Hello Chris. Where are you in the world? Yes I do show how to remove the throttle cable from the carburettor. Its in the video you were watching when you sent your comment. "R75/6 Part 1. BMW, Air Head Boxer, R Series service". In that video I start to show how to remove the carburettors 11minutes and 16 seconds from the start of the video, I get on to removing the throttle and choke cables 18 minutes and 15 seconds from the start of the video.
How to replace the carburettor and its cables is shown in the same series of videos but in part 5, its called, "R75/6 Part 5. BMW, Air Head Boxer, R Series service". If you go into that video 8 minutes and 46 seconds you will come to the part where I start to show how to fit the cables back onto the carburettors.
      I hope this helps Chris.
If you haven't done so already, can you please press the "thumbs up" button on the video next time you view, its so important to do this. It shows the infamous TH-cam algorithm someone liked the video, you can imagine there are not many people who want to know how to service a 50 year old bike, I need every thumbs up I can get, thank you. Take Care Chris Jim.
