I own and use a Surface Go since it came out. Fantastic little machine for my usage as a Tour Guide! And while battery power may indeed be an issue for some, you forgot to mention it has quick charge capabilities, so it can rapidly charge in 20 minutes and continue giving you the necessary love you need when on the Go :)
This little PC allows me to use Adobe Photoshop Elements (great pen support BTW), Office apps and most programs without a hitch...it's not for gaming but then again, I am on the go and working. I would recommend this Surface product to everyone under a similar need as mine.

I have a Surface Go and I absolutely love it, I think it's a wonderful machine and when I first saw it side by side with my mother's Surface Pro 5 I knew I made the right call. However I had a very specific use in mind for it which was something to throw in my college bag to use as a note taking device and occasional laptop. When I'm doing longer trips I take my old but still good enough laptop and when I'm home I have a gaming desktop. If you are buying a Surface to be your only/main computer don't even consider the Surface Go, forget it even exists.

I’m getting 9 plus hours on the Surface Go despite upgrading to Windows Home. I have also downloaded Google Chrome and Firefox. I believe by using Edge as my default browser I’m getting longer battery life than reviewers claim. I don’t do gaming, photoshop like apps nor do I use it at its highest peak performance level. I always have battery saver on and screen brightness down low. Mostly I’m using the device to write and edit, read newspapers and cruise the web, which is what it was designed to do. Also, after watching several reviews I was concerned about over night battery drainage, but so far that hasn’t been an issue. I purchased the 128/8 gb version without built in LTE. I got the entire package, tablet, keyboard and stylus. I opted for a small blue tooth mouse, at a third of the price of the Surface mouse. Judging by my smartphones I suspect LTE drains batteries big time, which may explain why this reviewer is getting just 4 hours battery life.

Just got mine today! Bought it with the basic typecover with £100 off, and I have to say the form factor really sells itself for me! The Pentium gold isn't doing so bad either (so far), just day one luck I guess!
To all the sceptics out there, it really isn't all *that* bad without the typecover, the touchscreen keyboard does fine for the most part, even if it is a little clunky on some pages. This thing does a surprisingly solid job at being a touchscreen laptop, personally haven't had too much issue with this despite reviewer comments. Best thing to do if you happen to find this on sale, but can't afford the keyboard is to get this now and the keyboard later, that is unless you absolutely need the productivity attributes immediately. From what I've seen you can also find the keyboard on sale separately.
Pretty good way to stay mobile folks, would recommend the 128gb model if you can find it on discount.

I agree about the bezels. It's 2018. 4 hours of battery life? Slow load times. Surface Gos downfall is due to Intel pushing that garbage processor. Hard, but sad pass.
    My hopes for next gen:
Surface Go 2: M3 processor or i5, I haven't tried a Qualcomm PC nor do I want to if it's basically a cell phone processor. Strictly USB-C. Black finish option. Smaller bezels.
Surface Pro 7: i7 or i9, strictly USB-C with Thunderbolt 3. Smaller bezels. LTE option. I want a graphite gold finish (I am crazy like that)

    • @kornkernel2232
      @kornkernel2232 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Doubt that Surface Go will even go for Core M, but most likely it will be Snapdragon 8cx or similar for next gen. This is small tablet form factor really begs to have long battery and be always connected, all while delivering good performance. For classic desktop apps, the new Snapdragon should at least perform like a Core M or even i3, depends on that app. For any UWP or recompiled desktop app to ARM, it should run native performance which is can compete with higher end Intel's.
USB-C should be a minimum on any next Surface. Though best if they really just fully switch to Thunderbolt for Intel Sufaces, until Thunderbolt is also supported on ARM which is currently exclusive to Intel.
Small bezels is achievable by having a larger display without shrinking the already small body. Old Surface 3 actually have smaller bezel than Go. Just don't expect rounded corner display as Windows don't natively support those and it will be a compromise on some desktop apps.

Having recently written my dissertation on it, with moderate coding work involved in the process, I can safely say the Surface Go is a decent tablet AND laptop - dat convenience tho! It is a little slow occassionally but held up well in my experience even with 25+ chrome tabs and skype open. Using the mid-spec 128gb SSD model at minimum is a MUST though, don't even bother with the eMMC one.
Typing this from my Blackberry KeyONE black (aka the "vaderberry" :) ) - love these devices!!

  • @nonnygb

I'm a recent Surface Go owner having downgraded from an i5 2017 pro model just for the sheer portability.
I feel I made the right choice but agree battery life, CPU choice and to some extent MS continual reluctance to bundle the keyboard needs to change to sweeten future hardware.
I was lucky to score a Go + Platinum Keyboard deal on Amazon UK just before Xmas... Only reason I switched.
It's not for everyone but it is IMO the best small 2 in 1 experience out there right now.

I tried a Surface Go near when it first came out. I adored the form factor (the magnesium case and the soft touch keyboard (with awesome travel)), pen support, and the philosophy behind how Windows 10 should work. My kickstand did have and issue where it popped up on the hinge, so I had to grab a new device. as much as I loved it, the slow performance, minimal app selection, and "okay" battery life made me move over to a 6th Gen iPad, where I still have pen support (though tbh I love the surface pen a LOT more), along with that nice big selection of quality iOS apps. I just wish Apple could make a keyboard that was competitive with the Surface type cover.

Shaun Lamb Same here. I bought the LTE version when it came out thinking that I might replace my iPad Pro 10.5”. I preferred my iPad over the Surface Go LTE mostly because the Go was very underpowered but also because the Apple Pencil is a superior stylus in my opinion.

I've used one since it came out in Australia.
    1. Shove that power slider all the way over to full performance. It IS a bit slow (you can use the one back - almost as good). Use the power save setting it will be VERY hesitant in response. Chrome kind of ticks me for touch, most everything else is fine at the full performance setting. I reboot more than usual - touch wanders off into the weeds now and again.
    2. If you do the above - yep about 4, maybe 4.5 hours.
    3. I have a 20,000 mAH battery pack with a QC 3 charging set to about 40 Watts via USB C - that hands me about 2 extra recharges and is small enough to fit in a pocket in my backpack - as a plus, it also recharges my HP Spectre X2, which also has poor battery life. Makes note taking in seminars fine.
    4. It fits pretty much anywhere - and the lightness and 10 inch display make it VERY handy. Obviously, I have 12 inch units - and the extra 2 inches is just too much for armchair or cramped quarters in seminars/presentations.
All the above said - MS can produce another one of these with an i5 Y series and 1.5 times the battery any time they like - I'll even pay more.
Also - you can get used to the keyboard - but it is small - price you pay for a 10" screen, I guess.

Love my Surface Go (non LTE) because I don't know too many people who work 4-8 hours straight - non-stop. My 45 watt 20K mAh USB Type C power bank keeps my Surface Go, IPhone, Watch and headphones topped off all day long (wall power adapter not needed). The notion of having the MAXIUMUM EVERYTHING in a single device is simply unrealistic / over-rated.
Put in a bigger battery - too heavy to hold single-handed
Put in a more expensive CPU - price goes up
Make it more powerful - guess you need a laptop
Adding LTE on a tablet when using your phone as a HotSpot would be more than sufficient equals having ONE data plan and not two.
Having all these things in one device and you have a $2,500 IPad Pro with an inferior keyboard. Thank you Microsoft for giving us a tablet with a full operating system and great keyboard.

Surface products are outstanding, but massively overpriced like an "Apple" tax. I have always suggested people consider buying last-gen Surface products. They are still of breathtaking quality and incredibly powerful for the form factor, but you will save hundreds of dollars.
I still have a Surface Pro 2 and though bulkier than current generations, performs flawlessly.
However, if Microsoft comes to their senses and adds Thunderbolt 3...I'd have no problem recommending current gen.

I think the next generation of this will really turn it into a complete package. I really contemplated getting one of these on sale (I could've gotten the base model for around $320 on eBay with a coupon and the type cover for like $60), but I decided it was worth it to wait for the next one.

Some folks don't understand that small business owners can write off services such as LTE subscriptions so it's to their benefit to get such a device capable of it. Convenience factor is high.

I have the Surface 3 (non-pro) and I carry that everywhere I go. Although it's slow, I haven't had any issue with it and battery last quite a long time. I'm not one who often computes for long stretches at a time but I have flown to nyc to california and never had it die on me in mid flight. I Was looking to upgrade it to the Surface Go LTE but these Windows on Arm laptops are compelling enough to wait for more of these types of laptops but I hope that Microsoft makes an Arm version of the Surface Go in the next iteration.

Got a surface go about 3 months back now. Really nice little surface, I just got the base version as I have a high end PC and wanted portability to be the main thing.
First day I got it I used to for 7hrs of note taking at a seminar, on my lap the whole time. But for general day to day usage, video streaming, apps notes extra get about the 3-5hr mark.
USB C can't be overlooked either! It can win so handy driving round for a day of meetings and keeping it topped up.
It's not a bad device for £450~ (base plus keyboard). Your paying really for the Microsoft "seal" and the build standards.
But if portability isn't your main concern, I'd advise give it a miss.

Still using my 1 year old Huawei Matebook E. If the Surface Go were not so pricey I would have made a change. Also the Battery life. I am still waiting for the perfect 10-12 inch Windows tablet/laptop.

I have a Surface Go and I just tether to my phone. I also carry a battery pack so the battery isn't an issue. I run a program that won't work on ARM but runs fine on the Go.

My guesses: the Razer Blade Stealth and the HP Spectre Folio (which you are more excited about).
For bonus points: Hoping you'll agree the Spectre Folio would be SO much cooler the size of the Surface Go.

Great review as always! Is it possible you could review the One Mix Yoga S2 or the GPD pocket 2 to see if they are any good solutions in portability as full Windows 10 machines in a size you could still put in your pocket? Thanks a lot!!

The Surface Go is perfect for me as a student. It has pen support that makes it a lot easier to take notes on fx illustrations. It's light and portable, easy to carry from classroom to classroom. The little thing can even run desktop apps that my school distributed. I can use it as a drawing tablet in my design subjects. Basically, every school related thing I do can be done on one device that can store more information than an actual notebook.
I do agree with a lot of Micheal's points and you should also take them into consideration when you buy the Surface Go. For me, it's the Jack of all trades for my school related work.

When you use a phone as a HotSpot through a WiFi in a crowded space it is better to try switching WiFi bandwidth to 5 GHz as it is usually not that busy and due to physics quickly suppresses in surrounding obstacles so radio air is "cleaner"

my hopes for surface go gen 2 would be: faster CPU, LTE availability from the get-go, and longer battery life. Oh, yes, the keyboard should be included, because Windows 10 is difficult to use with the on-screen keyboard.

Spot on, my thoughts exactly. I was ready to drop cash for this thing, but the battery life kills it more than the processor speed. I think I could get by with that processor, but NOT the battery life. It should be the best battery life of all Surface devices, or else call it, 'Go nowhere!' Still loving Surface though, but I do sort of disagree on the Surface Laptop 2 refresh. The spec bump is awesome, and no USB C isn't a thing for me. I think MS have that right at this point. MOST people wouldn't even use it.

The only reason I'd love to see USB c on the surface laptop 2 is to be able to charge it off a powerbank. But aside from that. Talking in terms of connecting USB c addon devices? Yeah no I don't need that port.

Would you be interested/willing to do a Samsung Tab S4 review? I got one on sale during Black Friday, and while it doesn't have the best keyboard and only one type c port rather than a few different IO, it has been a great entertainment and productivity machine. I'd like to see what you think of it.

The Surface go or an Ipad 2018? I already got a gaming PC at home and a Laptop. I'm a student and mostly want to use the device to take notes with the surface pen or apple pencil. The Ipad would cost me around 320€ while the surface go costs around 380€. What do you guys think?
