As a former tattoo artist what he says goes along with my own advice i gave clients. If you can' cover it with a 3 piece suit then don't get the tattoo there. It isn't about freedom of expression or choice, yes we americans hve those and it is good. But seriously you never know when you may go to court in the right or in the wrong, and the judge will see face hand and neck tatts as piss poor judgement and do his judging accordingly.
I have a cousin who was idiotic enough to tattoo his entire face and hands and he can't find work anywhere. He has a college degree but not even McDonald's will hire him.
@Bobby Allen Yep, he lives with my aunt and is in his 40's and absolutely nobody will hire him. He has had 3 jobs in his life and none lasted more than 3 years. The only tat I have can't be seen unless I take off my underwear.

@ a lot of people still look down upon hand tattoos, especially if that person is serving food. I can see it from both sides, to each their own though.
Tattoos don't mean shit. It is what is inside of a man that is important. I've seen big, strong jocks falls down and cry like babies under fire and I've seen little guys with glasses stand up under fire and fight like the devil was in them. Ermey is a good man. He is right about tats in the military. You are representing your nation. Try not to have naked demons all over your forearms if you are on duty in short sleeves.
Bill W it's been called. jokingly, nerd rage; however, those big guys, it seems, have all those muscles to make up for them being, for lack of better words, cowardly, and those so-called nerds, quite oftain, the little guys with glasses on who fight like the devil himself, they know true courage
Nico Ferguson Everyone has tatoos nowadays. It doesn't make them tough guys. It just makes them tatooed. A lot of people are going to look stupid when they get old and those tats look silly. Of course they will also be deaf from listening to loud music rather than mortar and artillery blasts. As long as tatoos are associated with "the bad side" guys will get them for the same reasons that country folks went from calling longhairs sissies, to wearing their hair long and calling themselves "outlaws". It's a pose for most people.
Bill W So, you think because some one has tattoos elsewhere they shouldn't be allowed in? I honestly can't tell because your comment seems to be agreeing with both sides.
+Bill W There are some tattoos I understand, others I find absolutely stupid. I almost got one at 18 and so glad stuff kept getting in my way. Tastes change, and you grow up. Having a blaring reminder throughout your life of the mistakes you made as a kid is not something I want. When the tattoo means more, then I understand. Military men with their company insignia tattooed on them is something they will be proud of their whole life, and is not the same thing as having flames, skulls, and bullets tattooed all over your body serving no purpose but to make people think you are tough. No offense if this hits home to anyone, it is just not something I find appealing.
When I was in the Army back in 79 we all went out and got tattoos but I had already been tattooed quite a bit before I enlisted. They gave us a little shit but nothing more than being yelled at, no article 15's or anything.I am Like R Lee when it comes to tattoos, I have a whole bunch of them ( around 60 or so) but it took me YEARS to get them all. now you see kids at 16 who are sleeved up. I know that it's whatever you feel like doing that suits you the best, and this is just how I feel about it, but to me, tattoos are like stickers on a steamer trunk and you get them as life goes along.
Farley Boy yeah awesome I agree I was never in the military but I was in prison so there's that whole culture in there but I seen the old lifers with sleeves that took years to acquire and that was the old age you see guys go in there for 2 year bits and have full sleeves in two months then you ask to see them a year down the road and there embarressed to show them
"Marines are not allowed to die without permission!!!" - Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, FMJ. I guess someone gave R. Lee Ermey permission... BRING ME HIS SUPERIOR OFFICER!!!
Richard Slawsky Likewise, I met him once in D.C. where we were both speaking at a press conference in the House office building. Got a chance afterwards to hang out with him a bit and enjoyed it immensely. He ranted about the tattoo policy that evening. Funny.
My grandfather told me a story about serving on a destroyer escort after the Korean War. One day they arrived in a port and a bunch of the men were going to go get their first tattoos. My grandfather declined and was heckled by some of his shipmates, he said he would think about it. As they returned, a bunch of marines were showing off their new tattoos and were boasting about them. A bunch of UDTs were also boarding at this time. The marines, feeling tough, bumped into the UDTs and gave them shit for "being in their way". The UDTs proceeded to kick those marines asses. As the marines were being reprimanded and tried pathetically to blame the UDTs, my grandfather swore he would never to get a tattoo. He said it is a badge worn by the insecure to look tough.
Working in a VA Hospital as a CNA I've seen my share tattoos. One of them I remember most, was the Vietnam memorial "The Three Soldiers" with the American flag as the background, in FULL color on a patient's forearm. When I saw it my first thought was "Absolutely BEAUTIFUL!" I let the guy know and he gave me a closer look. I could tell, he was happy I noticed.
When I was in 1977-1982 there were Marines that had tattoos and many that didn't. It wasn't prevalent like it is now. I think tattoos have gone out of hand with the sleeve tattoos and neck and legs. But to each their own. I didn't get any tattoos and still don't have any.
Im surprised the gunny didnt string his daughter up a tree for that tattoo😂. God bless this Man and God Bless the United States Marines. Unit, Core, God, Country! Semper Fi carry on! To all those who serve in any shape or form now and or will in the future Thank You All and God Bless. Ohhrah
When I was young I asked my father about tattoos. He had been in the Navy in WWII and had never gotten one. He said, "Those tattoos only make it easier for the cops to identify you." Remember that the Nazis tattooed their death camp prisoners. I have never gotten one either.
Tattoo joke: Skinny girl named Bernadette Bartkowski wants her name on her buns. Little room so artist suggests her initials, B B. Now all ask: Who's BoB?
Still missing old Gunny today. Great man that was basically the last of the generation that spoke out and actually had something worth listening to. Of course I mean that generation had something worth listening to not just Ermey. Ermey was just icing on the cake when he spoke.
Back in 85 when I was in the Navy I went to get a Tattoo and spent a good hour looking in the book for just the right one that I liked... I showed it to the guy and he looked at me and told me very firmly he wouldn't do it, I was upset as that was the only one I wanted, it was this big dragon that started on the shoulder with his tail wrapping around my forearm and the tip of the tail stopped on my wrist, now his reason was valid, but I was a young punk, I got all bent out of shape over it, his reason, my arm was far too skinny and I was too young, the young part was what didn't sit with me, I was 19... but he had a point, I would grow and my arms and chest would get much bigger and that awesome tat would look horrible when it got stretched out.. today I am glad I never got it.. just for THAT reason, I still wanted to get it later, but by then the moment had passed
He basically summed up my thoughts on it. Keep it constructive....stop nitpicking. There was a Sergeant recently with a 280 PFT, excellent rifle scores, and just got back from a tour. He got kicked out for a MARINE CORPS TATTOO on his arm. If America gets into a war, are they just gonna pick all the clean beans or whatever to fight?? A lot of people who would (and did) make excellent soldiers have tattoos (often if not mostly non offensive). Like he said, stop nitpicking.
This guy was a will be missed! He's the only one that made the has on my back stand up when I seen full metal jacket. Buy did that bring back some memories.
I remember the joke about the butterfly on someone's backside looked cool. But with age it turned into a dragon chasing a starfish. (I think I got it right.)
Michael Kagan said it all pretty well and I'd have to agree with him totally. I always like to say on this subject that if you want to be certain of making a lot of money on bets, just put two men in a locked room, add a bottle of drink (optional), a difference of opinion and just slowly turn up the heat. Then bet very heavily on who will be the first to raise their fists to the other. Rarely will you lose your money betting on the tattoos. Its narcissism and that by degree is a measure of a personality disorder which includes among other things, self loathing and poor self esteem all in all. "Look at me. Look at me. I really am a man after all." "Aren't I?"
You may be a complete idiot to think tattoos are about narcissism and being "manly". What of all the women who are getting them nowadays? Body art is just that, art. Just because society implies it as something doesn't mean it is.
i'm tattooed, i have a biker-beard, i play games, listen to deathmetal, father of three, my parents have a functional marriage even if they no longer quite understand what marriage is (tl;dr= alzheimers) and i work in the medical field. only problem so far? our hygiene supervisor hates my beard, but thats about it. it's so easy to judge people. it's just that the actual reality hardly ever agrees with you. i dunno how things are in third world countries like US or Australia, but back here in real world, things tend to make sense.
I am very glad that I never got any tattoos. I never broke down and got one when I was in the navy or when was riding my Harley. A lot of Harley friends used to razz me about it. Don't get me wrong I know other people like them and great for them. I however will keep the paint job that I was born with. It's like this....whats better.... a clean 57 Chevy or one with some stupid looking purple flowers painted on it I have many friends who are proud of their ink...I however am proud of my "clean paint job'"
I was joining the Marines at one point and was at the Military Entrance Processing Station and alot of people were there to join the army and national guard, It was me and one other guy going for Marines and i just happen to walk up to the office when 2 Marines were chewing this kid out saying he wouldnt be able to enlist cause he had a small sleeve tattoo, after he walked out i didnt see him again that day so I just thought it was completely unfair how he had to leave when he wanted to enlist, i saw the pain in his eyes but ya know its just a little decision to get some artwork on your body, pretty positive they even allow you to tat yourself after you join so theres no reason why all these 17 18yo kids with some tattoos shouldnt be able to join.
I got my blood type tattooed on my left fore arm near where a drip might go. I just hoped I never got that arm blown off. Still a conversation piece when some people see it.
I dont have a problem with tattoos. I also dont have a problem with the military stance on them. they put you in uniforms that are the same, cut your hair the same, make you walk, talk, stand, and behave the same. military members have a professional look to them and i think that tattoos take away from that focus
I go to this one bar and they have a tall, pretty blonde as a bartender. However, she has tattoos up and down her legs, on her arms and the back of her neck, and those are the ones I can see. She also has a nose ring coming out the side of her nose. Maybe some guys like that but most guys would nail it but never wife her up.
first thing i saw when i got off that bus in great lakes was an RDC in his NSU with a full color sleeve all the way down to his finger tips. i had two others with knuckle tats. tattoos are and will forever be a navy thing
AAAAAAHHHH,that's a war face, now let me see your war face! Bullshit, you didn't convince me,let me see your real war face! You don't scare me! Work on it!
In a select few the tattoo could be used as an identifying mark if located in an exposed area. Excluding such smaller units I don't think it should matter one damn bit.
I retired from the Arm a few years ago, and I remember back when I was a Private, there was a Specialist (white guy) who had sleeve tattoos like a Yakuza. They didn't make him less skilled at his job or less effective a leader when he made Sergeant. And the tattoos didn't matter due to the way he carried himself. Tattoos or not, you respected him for what he did and how he behaved. That was old school Army back in the '80s. Fast forward 20 years and we're in Iraq and Afghanistan. Nobody was saying squat about tattoos because we needed experienced soldiers (and Nave, Air Force and Marines) who had experience and could fight. Those guys have usually been in long enough to get a few tattoos. Bring it up to now and all of a sudden, tattoos reflect badly on the Army and the other services. This is due to a number of factors: 1. We're mostly done in Iraq and Afghanistan. We you segue to a peacetime Army, the leadership usually goes overboard getting back to the whole spit and polish garrison Army. 2. Due to Congress not doing their jobs for the past few years (keeping the country running smoothly), the Armed Forces have less funds to work with, less civilian support and instead of cancelling a handful of tanks - that the Army leadership told Congress we didn't need - we're having to draw down the force. So they're looking for ways to do that: PT, any negative actions, tattoos. 3. Much of the leadership (mostly Brigade level officers and up) are sycophants who are looking out for their next command more than they're looking out for the soldiers. They're not about to rock the boat saying these tattooed soldiers are the same ones who served so well in Iraq and Afghanistan. They're not going to raise the point that tattoos aren't so much symbolic of lower class nowadays, but a trend that people in all levels of society take part in. The whole thing with tattoos is only part of the problem. I'm actually glad I'm not in the Army anymore. I have to admit, I'm a bit worried as to how bad things will get.
Paul Ellis To serve with ink. New Army appearance regulation states, the people cannot serve there country with tattoos, nor can they soldiers that is already serving rank up to become a Officer, because tattoos are not professional and they think it is for the low class. Tattoo's does not make a Man Or Women Dishonorable. can every one please take a moment on facebook to like this page every number count please Help protest against this Policy facebook.com/ServeWithInk
hell we knew Ermey would be ok with tats...like he said he has several and when he was in it was custom to get tats. my brother is a jarhead and when he was in he got afew. most military personal that get tats start with the one that reps their branch of the military. my bro has USMC across one of his pecks and he said that was the one that started it for him.
the only tattoos my grandfather had were from his time in the navy... every milestone it seemed had a specific tattoo correlated to it. Crossing the Equator, going into the European theater, going to the pacific theater they were their permanent medals for being bad asses.. even when not in uniform.
Anything that Lee Ermey says about the military is worth listening to. I respect him so much.

@ i have my right hand done and have no issues , face on the other hand id never
@@austinarmstrong9729 agreed face and neck are still considered not good for employment. If I was rich I'd do my neck but never the face. But yeah hands aren't even bad i have both done and have gotten good things heard than anything bad
@ a lot of people still look down upon hand tattoos, especially if that person is serving food. I can see it from both sides, to each their own though.
"well Bonnie what do we got here?"
"...A Jelly Donut, Dad."
The company is paying for it. She has to eat it.
Bill W
Agreed. It's a cosmetic.
This world could use a few more people like R.Lee Ermey!
The late, great R. Lee Ermey. You are truly missed sir. Rest in Peace.
Lee has officially almost fucking killed me. I love this man. XD
+SmoothRide Scooter or not nuts anymore.........dld yah see what I did there.
it's the gang art....that's what there looking for....that plain and simple
Farley Boy yeah awesome I agree I was never in the military but I was in prison so there's that whole culture in there but I seen the old lifers with sleeves that took years to acquire and that was the old age you see guys go in there for 2 year bits and have full sleeves in two months then you ask to see them a year down the road and there embarressed to show them
"Marines are not allowed to die without permission!!!" - Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, FMJ. I guess someone gave R. Lee Ermey permission... BRING ME HIS SUPERIOR OFFICER!!!

Met the Gunny once. As he comes across here, he's just a nice guy.
Richard Slawsky
Likewise, I met him once in D.C. where we were both speaking at a press conference in the House office building. Got a chance afterwards to hang out with him a bit and enjoyed it immensely. He ranted about the tattoo policy that evening. Funny.
This man was a A Class American treasure, and a credit to the USMC, man.
RIP Gunny
Awesome Man ... God Bless you. Rest in peace.
Yes, he was a drill instructor in the Marine Corps. He served for 12 years from '61-'72.
Hands down, this man is a real class act.
I was a leatherneck during those same years, and never got a tat either. CLNC, Quantico and HQMC.
Met him when I was in The Old Guard in DC and in Kuwait before the big show. Awesome guy.
Ohhrah
and to all of you guys that did (and didn't ) make it back, GOD BLESS YOU ALL.
When I was young I asked my father about tattoos. He had been in the Navy in WWII and had never gotten one. He said, "Those tattoos only make it easier for the cops to identify you." Remember that the Nazis tattooed their death camp prisoners. I have never gotten one either.
My dad, a Marine, told me same thing. I decided not to be a criminal and wear an Iwo tattoo on my forearm.
Glenn Davis having tattoos makes you a criminal? Ignorance is bliss.

Kazahmish skin doesnt work.like that lol
Never pick a tattoo out of a damn book..
Rest in peace gunnery sergeant this nation will forever always oh yeah the Gratitude and is honored
A guy already in the Corps got thrown out for having a "Marine Corps" tattoo? That makes no sense!
Much Respect Sir! Thank you!.
A true gentleman, he is greatly missed ,R. I. P.
Rip gunny
It was a utter honor to meet Ermey in 2007 in Okinawa, sad to see him go.

We'd have a much better life today in the USA if this man had entered politics...
the respect a Marine gunny our brother
I was joining the Marines at one point and was at the Military Entrance Processing Station and alot of people were there to join the army and national guard, It was me and one other guy going for Marines and i just happen to walk up to the office when 2 Marines were chewing this kid out saying he wouldnt be able to enlist cause he had a small sleeve tattoo, after he walked out i didnt see him again that day so I just thought it was completely unfair how he had to leave when he wanted to enlist, i saw the pain in his eyes but ya know its just a little decision to get some artwork on your body, pretty positive they even allow you to tat yourself after you join so theres no reason why all these 17 18yo kids with some tattoos shouldnt be able to join.
its the downside to an all-volunteer force and shit jobs for kids starting out. Just like civilian jobs they set the criteria for employment.
He left us behind five years ago, but I still think about him from time to time.
Audie Murphy had no tattoos. He didn't need them. He knew who he was.

R. Lee Ermey is great. He shows up every year at the CMP national matches at Camp Perry, OH to compete.
tattoos are as American as apple pie
Tats are common, popular, but there's nothing patriotic or virtuous about them.
I like Ermy generally, but he went "a little overboard" here. Tats are not a sign of ambition, bravery, or any kind of virtue.
I respect this dude so much. Especially when it comes to military discussions. He's a bad ass
This is due to a number of factors:
New Army appearance regulation states, the people cannot serve there country with tattoos, nor can they soldiers that is already serving rank up to become a Officer, because tattoos are not professional and they think it is for the low class. hell we knew Ermey would be ok with tats...like he said he has several and when he was in it was custom to get tats. my brother is a jarhead and when he was in he got afew. most military personal that get tats start with the one that reps their branch of the military. my bro has USMC across one of his pecks and he said that was the one that started it for him.
