On page 382 in the book "The Battle of Okinawa: The Blood and the Bomb" by George Feifer, a wounded Marine from the battle talked about what happened during a visit by John Wayne. Wayne was pretty clueless about the realities of men at war. Here's an excerpt: "Wearing a fancy cowboy outfit, down to spurs and pistols, the celluloid hero greeted the wounded with a self-satisfied "Hiya, guys!" -- which was greeted with silence. Then someone booed. "Suddenly everyone was booing."
Hammerschlägen M Oh, I don't think John Wayne meant to be disrespectful or that he's a bad person. I'm just saying he wasn't really the hard, man's man everyone likes to think he was. He played a good one on film, but he was otherwise pretty far removed from the tough realities that actually made men hard. The account in the book was actually in a medical ward in Hawaii where a lot of the wounded from the battle were shipped.

Do some research if you don't believe.
No way, Jose. Wayne was a phony. R. Lee was the real deal. Do some research & see if I'm not absolutely, 100% correct, private! Do you understand me?!! Get down & gimme 50!

Oh, I don't think John Wayne meant to be disrespectful or that he's a bad person.
I thought Wayne was not physically able to join the war then, not sure specifically but that is what I have heard. I know he tried to join it.
0:07 is that Kentucky ballistics scott
Nah Scott is too young for this commercial and doesn't have a cleft chin.
I worked for Motorola and fixed the Coors pagers on-site at the brewery in the '90's, joined the Marines in 1999, and met R Lee Ermey several times when he was guest Speaker at our Marine Corps Balls from 2001-2004.
Oorah! USMC 1999-2007
John Wayne looks like he walked straight out of the set of the longest day that’s pretty darn good editing
The movie that was edited with John Wayne was Cast a Giant Shadow with Kirk Douglass. John Wayne was not the lead Kirk Douglass . Check it out Duke o Lynn had a small part in it.
Best version of PG R Lee Emory ever.
Thanks for your service, Gunny . . . rest in peace . . .
R. Lee was the best. From Nobody to somebody. What a career and life he had. RIP DI R. Lee Ermey. You are missed.
Is that you John...Holy shit ! It's really you John Wayne!
Proud to have been a fellow brother.... Semper Fi !
the simple fact is, boot camp experience must include drill sergeants like R Lee, aka think thats bad? wait till youre in combat 1st time. they have to learn to deal with the shock and stress and impossible demands for when it REALLY happens. RIP R Lee.
It took me a full week for me to realise that I was actually taller than Sgt. Brewer on mine. Yep, they were larger than life these tough bastards.
THIS is one of my favorite beer commercials EVER. Even though I've never drunk beer.
Hilarious! Loved him. May he RIP
Blast from the Past. I remember watching this as a young teen, probably watching football on Saturdays.
Who ever edit John Wayne’s face on to that body did a great job for being in 1992
That should have been a Super bowl commercial. Best ever! RIP Duke and R Lee hope you are enjoying a cold one together
That's funny. I thought they were all going to step forward and claim it.
I thought it would be like Spartacus/oh captain my captain.
Semper fi do or die, John Wayne, and gunny
Rest in peace, Gunny. Semper fi.
I love this. How could I possibly have missed it being alive in that era?
